Translation

✧ The campaign of the Franks in al-Andalus In the year one hundred seventy-nine, Hishām, the ruler of al-Andalus, dispatched a large army under ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Mughīth to Jalīqiyya. They marched until they reached Istarqa. Udhfūnush, the king of the Galicians, had gathered and mobilized, and he was reinforced by the king of the Bashkans, who are his neighbors, along with those adjacent to them from among the Magians and the people of those regions. Thus he came to be in a great host. ʿAbd al-Malik advanced against him, and Udhfūnush withdrew in awe of him. ʿAbd al-Malik pursued them, following their tracks and destroying everyone who lagged behind among them. He subdued their lands, penetrated deep into them, and remained there taking spoils, killing, and laying waste. He violated the sanctity of Udhfūnush's household and returned safely. Hishām had also dispatched another army from another direction, and they likewise entered at an appointed time arranged with ʿAbd al-Malik. They destroyed, plundered, and took spoils. When they sought to leave the enemy's territory, a Frankish force intercepted them, inflicting losses upon them and killing a number of Muslims. Then they broke free, were saved, and returned safely except for those of them who had been killed.
