Translation
✧ The governorship of Harthama b. Aʿyan over the lands of Ifrīqiya. The arrival of Yaḥyā b. Mūsā from al-Rashīd coincided with the time when al-ʿAlāʾ and those with him headed towards al-Qayrawān. The reason for his arrival was that al-Rashīd had learned what Ibn al-Jārūd had done and his corruption of Ifrīqiya, so he dispatched Harthama b. Aʿyan, accompanied by Yaḥyā b. Mūsā, due to his standing among the people of Khurāsān, and ordered Yaḥyā to go ahead, deal gently with Ibn al-Jārūd, and win him over so that he would return to obedience before Harthama's arrival. Yaḥyā came to al-Qayrawān, and there took place between him and Ibn al-Jārūd much talk. He handed him al-Rashīd's letter, and Ibn al-Jārūd said: 'I am obedient to hearing and obeying. Al-ʿAlāʾ b. Saʿīd has drawn near me with the Berbers. If I leave al-Qayrawān, the Berbers will seize it and take possession of it, and I would have lost the lands of the Commander of the Faithful. But I will go out against al-ʿAlāʾ. If he defeats me, then your concern and the frontiers are your business; but if I defeat him, I will await Harthama's arrival, hand over the lands to him, and go to the Commander of the Faithful.' His intention was to deceive, for if he defeated al-ʿAlāʾ, he would prevent Harthama from entering the lands. Yaḥyā knew this, and he met privately with Ibn al-Fārisī, reproaching him for abandoning obedience. Ibn al-Fārisī apologized, swore that he was obedient, and offered his assistance against Ibn al-Jārūd. Ibn al-Fārisī set about undermining his position, won over a group of his soldiers, and they responded to him. His following grew, and he went out to fight Ibn al-Jārūd. Ibn al-Jārūd said to a man among his companions named Ṭālib: 'When we face each other, I will call Ibn al-Fārisī to reproach him, so you aim at him while he is distracted and kill him!' He agreed to that. The two armies faced each other, and Ibn al-Jārūd called Muḥammad b. al-Fārisī and spoke with him. Ṭālib charged at him while he was distracted and killed him. His companions were routed, and Yaḥyā b. Mūsā set out to Harthama in Tripoli. As for al-ʿAlāʾ b. Saʿīd, when the people learned of Harthama's proximity to them, his following increased, and they came to him from every direction. They marched against Ibn al-Jārūd, and Ibn al-Jārūd realized that he had no strength against him, so he wrote to Yaḥyā b. Mūsā summoning him to hand over al-Qayrawān to him. Yaḥyā marched to him with the army of Tripoli in al-Muḥarram of the year 179. When he reached Qābis, the bulk of the army met him, and Ibn al-Jārūd left al-Qayrawān at the beginning of Ṣafar. His governorship had lasted seven months. Al-ʿAlāʾ b. Saʿīd and Yaḥyā b. Mūsā raced towards al-Qayrawān, each of them wanting the credit for himself. Al-ʿAlāʾ outran him and entered it, killed a group of Ibn al-Jārūd's companions, and then went to Harthama. Ibn al-Jārūd also went to Harthama, and Harthama sent him to al-Rashīd, writing to inform him that al-ʿAlāʾ was the cause of his rebellion. Al-Rashīd wrote commanding him to send al-ʿAlāʾ to him, so he sent him. When he arrived, he received abundant gifts and robes of honor from al-Rashīd, but he remained in Miṣr only a short while before he died. As for Ibn al-Jārūd, he was imprisoned in Baghdādh. Harthama went to al-Qayrawān and arrived there in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year 179. He reassured the people and calmed them. He built the great palace at al-Munastīr in the year 180, and built the wall of the city of Tripoli on the side facing the sea. Ibrāhīm b. al-Aghlab was governor of al-Zāb. He sent many gifts to Harthama and treated him kindly, so Harthama appointed him over a district of al-Zāb, where his record was good. Then ʿIyāḍ b. Wahb al-Hawwārī and Kulayb b. Jumayʿ al-Kalbī gathered forces and intended to fight Harthama. He sent Yaḥyā b. Mūsā against them with a large army, and he dispersed their forces, killed many of their companions, and returned to al-Qayrawān. When Harthama saw the discord in Ifrīqiya, he sent repeated letters to al-Rashīd asking to be relieved, and he was ordered to come to him in Iraq. He departed from Ifrīqiya in Ramaḍān of the year 181. His governorship had lasted two and a half years.
