✧ Those of the notables who died in this year: Ibrāhīm b. Ṣāliḥ b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās. Ibrāhīm b. Ṣāliḥ b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās was governor of Egypt and died in Shaʿbān. ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb narrated from him. Ibrāhīm b. Hirmah. Ibrāhīm b. Hirmah, the poet, was Ibrāhīm b. ʿAlī b. Salamah b. ʿĀmir b. Hirmah, Abū Isḥāq al-Fihrī al-Madanī, an eloquent poet. He came to al-Manṣūr in Baghdad among a delegation of the people of Madinah when al-Manṣūr summoned them. They presented themselves and sat behind a curtain in front of al-Manṣūr, who could see the people from behind it while they could not see him. The chamberlain Abū al-Khaṣīb stood saying, "O Commander of the Faithful, this is so-and-so the orator," and he would order him to deliver a speech. And he would say, "This is so-and-so the poet," and he would ask him to recite, until the last of them was this Ibn Hirmah. He said: I heard him say, "No welcome and no greetings, and may God not delight an eye through him." He said: I said, "Indeed we belong to God and to Him we return. By God, my soul has perished." Then my soul returned to me and I said, "O soul, this is a stance in which, if you do not exert yourself, you will perish." Then he asked me to recite, and I recited to him my ode in which I say: A coquettish east wind stripped his garment from you, and the departing caravan brought near the separation. until I reached my saying: As for the one you granted safety, he is safe from death, and as for the one you sought to bereave, he is bereaved. He said: Then he ordered the curtain to be raised, and behold his face was like a piece of the moon. He asked me to recite the rest of the ode, ordered me to draw near him, and seated me before him. Then he said, "Woe to you, O Ibrāhīm! Were it not for sins of yours that have reached me, I would have preferred you over your companions. So confess your sins to me and I will pardon them for you." I said, "This man is a knowledgeable jurist, and he only wants to kill me with a proof that would be binding against me." So I said, "O Commander of the Faithful, every sin that reached you and that you have pardoned me for, I confess to it." He took the staff and struck me two blows, and I said: I endure from one who presses hard, a mighty camel, who lays the supports of his chest to the kneeling place. Then he again struck me, and I said: I endure from an old camel with marks on his sides, on which the girth and the crupper have left traces. He said, "I have ordered for you ten thousand dirhams, and I have attached you to your peers, Ṭarīḥ b. Ismāʿīl and Ruʾbah b. al-ʿAjjāj. And if any matter I dislike reaches me about you, I will surely kill you." I said, "Yes, and you are absolved [and released] from my blood if any matter you dislike reaches you." Ibn Hirmah said: I came to Madinah, and a man from the Ṭālibids came to me and greeted me. I said, "Move away from me; do not cause my blood to boil." Among the things al-Manṣūr resented about him was his saying: No matter how much I am blamed for loving them, I love the descendants of Fāṭimah. The descendants of the daughter of him who brought the clear verses, and the religion and the established sunnah. I do not care, by my love for them, for others among the grazing livestock. It was said to him during the ʿAbbāsid state, "Are you not the one who said such-and-such?" and he recited these verses to him. He said: May God bite the mother of the one who said them with them! Someone he trusted said to him, "Are you not the one who said them?" He said, "Yes, but having my mother bitten by them is better than being killed." And from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Qarīb, the nephew of al-Aṣmaʿī, from his uncle, who said: A man from Syria told me: I came to Madinah and headed for the house of Ibrāhīm b. Hirmah, and there was a young daughter of his playing with clay. I said to her, "What has your father done?" She said, "He went as a delegate to one of the generous men, and we have had no news of him for a while." I said, "Slaughter a she-camel for us, for we are your guests." She said, "By God, we have no she-camel." I said, "A sheep." She said, "By God, we have none." I said, "A chicken." She said, "By God, we have none." I said, "Then give us an egg." She said, "By God, we have none." I said, "Then false is what your father said: How many a she-camel have I stabbed in the throat with a pouring rain of blood, or a male camel. She said, "That deed of my father is what brought us to having nothing." Al-Akhfash said: Thaʿlab said to us: Al-Aṣmaʿī said: "The poets were sealed with Ibn Hirmah, and he is the last of the authorities." Abū al-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzī mentioned his death in this year in al-Muntaẓam. And al-Jarrāḥ b. Malīḥ, the father of Wakīʿ b. al-Jarrāḥ. And Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jamīl, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Madanī, served as judge of Baghdad for seventeen years in the camp of al-Mahdī. Ibn Maʿīn and others declared him trustworthy. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Muḥammad b. Abī Bakr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Muḥammad b. Abī Bakr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm came as judge to Iraq and died in this year. Al-Musayyab b. Zuhayr b. ʿAmr, Abū Muslim al-Ḍabbī. Al-Musayyab b. Zuhayr b. ʿAmr, Abū Muslim al-Ḍabbī, was chief of police in Baghdad in the days of al-Manṣūr, al-Mahdī, and al-Rashīd, and he governed Khurāsān once for al-Mahdī. His death occurred in this year at the age of seventy-six. Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jamīl, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Madanī. Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jamīl, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Madanī. He served as judge in Baghdad in the camp of al-Mahdī and in the time of Hārūn al-Rashīd, and he held the office for seventeen years. He narrated from Hishām b. ʿUrwah and Sahl b. Abī Ṣāliḥ. Yaḥyā said: "He is trustworthy." He died in Baghdad in this year. Ṣāliḥ b. Bashīr al-Murrī. Ṣāliḥ b. Bashīr, Abū Bishr the Qurʾān reciter, known as al-Murrī. He was from the people of Baṣrah, a slave belonging to a woman of Banū Murrah b. al-Ḥārith. He narrated from al-Ḥasan, Ibn Sīrīn, Bakr b. ʿAbd Allāh, and Thābit. ʿAffān and others narrated from him. He was a righteous servant, full of fear and intense weeping, and he used to remind and preach. Sufyān al-Thawrī attended his gathering and said, "This is a warner for a people." [Ibn al-Jawzī, may God have mercy on him, said:] Some traditionists declared him weak, and what we hold is that he used to confuse what he narrated without intending error. From Ibn al-Ghalābī, who said: A shaykh from the secretaries told us: When al-Mahdī sent for Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī, he came to him. When he entered and brought his donkey close to al-Mahdī's carpet, al-Mahdī ordered his two sons—who were his heirs apparent—Mūsā and Hārūn, saying, "Rise and help your uncle dismount." When they approached him, Ṣāliḥ turned to himself and said, "O Ṣāliḥ, you have failed and lost if you have only acted for this day." From Abū Nuʿaym b. Aʿyan, who said: Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī said: I entered upon al-Mahdī and said, "O Commander of the Faithful, bear for God's sake what I say to you today, for the people most worthy of God are those who bear the harshest counsel concerning Him. And it is fitting that one who has kinship with the Messenger of God ﷺ should inherit his character and follow his guidance. God has bequeathed to you an inheritance of understanding in knowledge that cuts off your excuse. Know that the Messenger of God ﷺ is the adversary of whoever opposes him regarding his community, and whoever has Muḥammad as his adversary has God as his adversary. So prepare for the dispute with God and the dispute with His Messenger proofs that guarantee you salvation, or surrender to destruction. Know that the slowest of the fallen to rise is the one felled by a whim that he claims brings him near to God. And the firmest of people on the Day of Resurrection is the one who holds most firmly to the Book of God and the Sunnah of His Prophet ﷺ. One like you does not compete in stripping away disobedience, but evil appears to you as goodness, and treacherous scholars testify for you upon it. By this snare the world has trapped your peers. So be excellent in forbearance, for I have been excellent in delivering to you." He said: Al-Mahdī wept. Abū Hammām said: One of the secretaries informed me that he saw this speech written in al-Mahdī's registers. Al-Faraj b. Faḍālah b. al-Nuʿmān b. Nuʿaym, Abū Faḍālah al-Ḥimṣī al-Tanūkhī. Al-Faraj b. Faḍālah b. al-Nuʿmān b. Nuʿaym, Abū Faḍālah al-Ḥimṣī al-Tanūkhī, [one of the most noble of them]. He settled in Baghdad and was in charge of the treasury there at the beginning of al-Rashīd's caliphate. He narrated from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī and Hishām b. ʿUrwah, among others. ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd and Surayj b. Yūnus narrated from him. A man from his descendants mentioned that he was born during the caliphate of al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān, in the campaign of Maslamah against al-Ṭuwānah. The news of his birth came [on the day al-Ṭuwānah was conquered, and his father informed Maslamah]. Maslamah said, "What have you named him?" He said, "I named him al-Faraj because God relieved us on this day with the conquest." Maslamah said to Faḍālah, "You have done well." The Muslims had suffered severe hardship at al-Ṭuwānah. That was in the year eighty-eight. From ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan al-Qazwīnī, who said: I heard one of our companions say: Al-Manṣūr came one day riding while al-Faraj b. Faḍālah was sitting at the Gate of Gold. The people stood, and he entered through the gate, but al-Faraj did not stand for him. He became furious and summoned him, saying, "What prevented you from standing when you saw me?" He said, "I feared that God would ask me about it: why did you do it? And He would ask you: why were you pleased with it, when the Messenger of God ﷺ disliked it?" He said: Al-Manṣūr wept, drew him near, and fulfilled his needs. Al-Faraj died in this year, and it is also said in the year seventy-seven. Some traditionists declared him trustworthy, and some declared him weak. Al-Waḍḍāḥ, Abū ʿAwānah. Al-Waḍḍāḥ, Abū ʿAwānah, client of Yazīd b. ʿAṭāʾ al-Wāsiṭī. Al-Bukhārī said: Yazīd b. ʿAṭāʾ, and Yazīd was a client of [Banū] Yashkur. He was among the captives of Jurjān. He saw al-Ḥasan and Ibn Sīrīn, and he heard from Muḥammad b. al-Munkadir, Qatādah, Manṣūr b. al-Muʿtamir, and al-Aʿmash. Shuʿbah, Ibn ʿUlayyah, and Ibn Mahdī narrated from him. He was trustworthy, reliable, and truthful. From Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Abān, who said: I heard my father say: ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd bought Abū ʿAwānah to be with his father Yazīd. Abū ʿAwānah had a friend who was a storyteller, and Abū ʿAwānah used to treat him well. The storyteller said, "I do not know how to repay him." After that, he never sat in a gathering without saying to those present, "Pray to God for ʿAṭāʾ the cloth merchant, for he freed Abū ʿAwānah." Hardly a gathering passed without someone going to ʿAṭāʾ to thank him. When that became too much for him, he freed him. Abū ʿAwānah died in this year, and it is also said in the year five, at the age of thirty-two. In this year also died Nuʿaym b. Maysarah al-Naḥwī al-Kūfī, and Abū al-Aḥwaṣ.
