He died in this year at the age of fifty-four, and his father died twenty-one nights before him, and they were buried in the cemetery of Bāb al-Tīn. It is said: in the cemetery of al-Khayzurān. Manṣūr, client of ʿĪsā b. Jaʿfar Manṣūr, client of ʿĪsā b. Jaʿfar, whose nickname was Zalzal, and it prevailed over him and his name was forgotten. He used to play the lute, such that he was proverbial for it, and he made in Baghdad a public pool that was proverbial. [Abū Bakr] Aḥmad [b. ʿAlī] al-Khaṭīb said: al-Ḥasan b. Abī Bakr recited to us: my father recited to us: Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. ʿArafa Nifṭawayh recited to us his own composition: If Zuhayr and Imruʾ al-Qays had seen the beauty contained in Zalzal's pool, they would not have described Salmā nor Umm Sālim, nor would they have made much mention of al-Dukhūl and Ḥawmal. From Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm al-Mawṣilī, from his father, who said: Zalzal said to me: I have a slave girl whose condition and story are such that I have taught her singing. I desired to see her but was ashamed to ask him. When Zalzal died, I learned that his heirs knew of the girl, so I went to them, and they brought her out, and she was a girl whom emaciation had almost branded, had it not been for what remained of her and what diminished from it. I said to her: Sing. She sang while her eyes shed tears, then she sobbed, such that I thought her soul had left. I mounted at once and entered upon the Commander of the Faithful and told him her story. He ordered her brought. When she entered upon him, he said: Sing. She sang and tried to weep, but awe of the Commander of the Faithful prevented her. He took pity on her, was pleased with her, and said: Would you like me to buy you? She said: My master, since you have given me the choice, your sincere counsel has become my duty. By God, no one will buy me after Zalzal and benefit from me. He ordered her purchase, manumitted her, and granted her a stipend. In another version: he said: Would you like me to buy you? She said: O Commander of the Faithful, you have offered me what hope falls short of, but it is not loyalty that anyone should own me and benefit from me. He grew more tender toward her and said: Sing [a song]. She sang: The eye reveals my concealment and discloses it, and the heart hides what I have stored within it. How can what is hidden between them remain concealed, when the eye shows it and the heart hides it? He bought her, manumitted her, and granted her a stipend until he died. A devout Egyptian tried by affliction A devout Egyptian tried by affliction. From al-Awzāʿī, who said: one of the wise men related to me: I set out intending the frontier post, until when I was at ʿArīsh Miṣr or below it, I came upon an awning, and in it was a man whose hands, legs, and sight were gone, and he was saying: O God, I praise You with a praise that matches the praises of Your creation, as Your favor over the rest of Your creation, since You have favored me over many of those You created with a great favor. I said: By God, I will ask him whether he was taught this or inspired. I approached him, greeted him, and he returned the greeting. I said to him: I will ask you about something; tell me about it. He said: If I have knowledge of it, I will tell you. I said: For which of His blessings do you praise Him, or for which excellence do you thank Him? He said: Do you not see what He has done with me? I said: Yes. He said: By God, if God, mighty and majestic, poured the sky as fire upon me and burned me, commanded the mountains and they crushed me, commanded the seas and they drowned me, and commanded the earth and it swallowed me, I would only increase in love and gratitude to Him. And I have a need from you. I said: What is it? He said: I had someone who looked after me at prayer time and fed me at my breaking fast, and I have missed him since yesterday. Look for me, and see if you can find him. I said: In fulfilling this servant's need there is nearness to God, exalted. I set out in search of him until I was among sand dunes, and there was a beast of prey that had seized the boy and eaten him. I said: We belong to God and to Him we return. How can I come to this righteous servant with a gentle face and tell him the news lest he die? I came to him, greeted him, and he returned the greeting. I said to him: I will ask you about something; will you tell me? He said: If I have knowledge of it, I will tell you. I said: Are you nobler in station before God, mighty and majestic, or was Ayyūb ﷺ ? He said: Rather, Ayyūb ﷺ was nobler before God, mighty and majestic, than me, and greater in station. I said: Did He not try him and he was patient, until those who used to find comfort in him shunned him, and he became an object for passersby? He said: Yes. I said: Your son, of whose story you told me what you told me, I went out in search of him, until I was among sand dunes, and there was the beast that had seized the boy and eaten him. He said: Praise be to God who has not placed in my heart any regret from this world. Then he sobbed once and died. I said: We belong to God and to Him we return. Who will help me wash, shroud, and bury him? While I was thus, a group of riders came seeking the frontier post. I signaled to them, and they approached and said: What are you doing with this man? I told them what had happened to him. They turned their mounts, and we washed him with sea water, shrouded him in clothes they had with them, and I led the prayer over him among them, and we buried him in that awning of his. The people went on to their frontier post, and I spent the night in his awning, finding comfort in him. When as much of the night had passed as remained, I saw my companion in a green meadow, wearing green garments, standing and reciting the revelation. I said: Are you not my companion? He said: Yes. I said: What brought you to what I see? He said: I arrived from among the patient at a degree they did not attain except by patience in affliction and gratitude in ease. Al-Awzāʿī said: I have not ceased to love the people of that affliction since the wise man related this account to me.
