Translation
✧ In the year one hundred and seventy-three Muḥammad b. Sulaymān b. ʿAlī died in al-Baṣrah, so al-Rashīd sent someone who seized his estate, and it was immense in wealth, goods, and mounts. They carried away from it what was suitable for the caliphate and left what was not suitable. Among what they took was sixty thousand thousand [dirhams]. When they brought that to him, he released from it a great deal to the boon companions and singers, and deposited the rest in his treasury. The reason al-Rashīd seized his estate was that his brother Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān was slandering him to al-Rashīd out of envy toward him, saying: “He has no wealth or estate but that he has taken more than its price to strengthen himself for what he talks to himself about,” meaning the caliphate. “And his properties are lawful and free for the Commander of the Faithful.” Al-Rashīd used to order that his letters be preserved. When Muḥammad b. Sulaymān died, his letters were brought out to Jaʿfar, his brother, and they were used as proof against him. He had no full brother besides Jaʿfar, so he acknowledged them, and for this reason his properties were seized. His biography: He is Muḥammad b. Sulaymān b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās, and his mother was Umm Ḥasan bt. Jaʿfar b. Ḥasan b. Ḥasan b. ʿAlī. He was one of the notable men of Quraysh and their brave ones. Al-Manṣūr combined al-Baṣrah and al-Kūfah for him, and al-Mahdī married him to his daughter al-ʿAbbāsah. He had enormous wealth, and his income every day was one hundred thousand [dirhams]. He had a signet ring of red ruby the like of which was not seen. It fell one night from his hand [on the night of his wedding to al-ʿAbbāsah], so they began to search for it and could not find it. He said: “Extinguish the candles,” and they did so, and then they saw it. He had fifty thousand clients, of whom twenty thousand were freedmen. He suffered from moistness, so he used to treat himself with musk, using twenty mithqāls of it every day and leaving it in the folds of his belly. He narrated a ḥadīth from his father, from his great-grandfather—who is Ibn ʿAbbās—a marfūʿ ḥadīth about wiping the head of an orphan toward the front of his head, and wiping the head of one who has a father toward the back of it. He came as a delegate to al-Rashīd and congratulated him on the caliphate, so al-Rashīd honored him, magnified him, and increased his domain greatly. When he wanted to leave, al-Rashīd went out with him to see him off as far as Kalwādhā. He died in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year at the age of fifty-one. Al-Rashīd sent someone who selected from his liquid wealth, and he found for him of gold three thousand thousand dinars, and of dirhams sixty thousand thousand, apart from the estates and jewels. From al-Ḥusayn b. Sallām, client of the family of Sulaymān b. ʿAlī, who said: When Muḥammad b. Sulaymān b. ʿAlī was dying, his head was in the lap of his brother Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān. Jaʿfar said: “What a breaking of the back!” Muḥammad said: “What a breaking of the back of one who meets the Compeller tomorrow. By God, would that your mother had not borne me! Would that I had been a porter, and that I had not been in what I was in.” Al-Rashīd appointed in his place his paternal uncle Sulaymān b. Abī Jaʿfar. Ibn Jarīr related that some people said: The death of Muḥammad b. Sulaymān and al-Khayzurān was on the same day. From Muḥammad b. Yazīd, who said: It reached me that a slave girl of the slave girls of Muḥammad b. Sulaymān stood at his grave and said: Dust has become for the one I love a night's lodging. Meet the dust and say to it: May you be greeted. We love you, O dust, and what is in us Is only the honor of him upon whom you have been poured.
