Murrah Mention of the notables who died in this year Al-Ḥasan b. al-Khalīl b. Murrah. He was given to much worship and long weeping. From ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣāliḥ, who said: I never saw in Egypt anyone I would prefer over al-Ḥasan b. al-Khalīl in asceticism and scrupulousness. I saw him carrying flour in a sack for people for a wage, drawing near to God every Friday with a day's load. Then his situation increased, and he would not save anything for a second time. He wore a woolen garment worth less than a dirham. The people of Egypt agreed that his supplication was answered. From Mūsā b. Hārūn, who said: I once saw al-Ḥasan b. al-Khalīl at ʿArafāt and spoke with him. Then I saw him circumambulating the House, and I said: Supplicate God for me that He accept my pilgrimage. He wept and supplicated for me. Then I came to Egypt and said: Al-Ḥasan b. al-Khalīl was with us in Makkah. They said: He did not perform the pilgrimage this year. It used to reach me that he would travel to Makkah in a single night, but I did not believe it until I saw him. He reproached me and said: You have made me known. I did not like you to speak of this, so do not do it again, by my right over you. Al-Ḥasan b. Ṣāliḥ b. Ḥayy Al-Ḥasan b. Ṣāliḥ b. Ḥayy. He and his brother ʿAlī were born twins in the year one hundred. They and their mother would stand in prayer the whole night, each taking a third, and each would recite a third of the Qurʾān. Then he would sleep, and al-Ḥasan would stand for the next third and recite a third of the Qurʾān. Their mother died, so they divided the night between them. Then ʿAlī died, and al-Ḥasan stood for the whole of it, completing a recitation of the Qurʾān every night. Al-Ḥasan sold a slave girl and said: Tell them that she once spat blood in our presence. From Sulaymān b. Idrīs al-Minqarī, who said: My brother al-Ḥasan craved fish. When it was brought, he put his hand to the fish's belly button, and his hand trembled. He ordered it taken away and did not eat anything. He was asked about that, and he said: When I put my hand to its belly, I remembered that the first part of a human being to putrefy is his belly, so I could not taste it. From Khalaf b. Tamīm, who said: Ḥasan b. Ṣāliḥ used to pray until the pre-dawn, then sit weeping in his prayer place, while ʿAlī sat weeping in his room. He said: Their mother used to weep night and day. She died, then ʿAlī died, then Ḥasan died. I saw Ḥasan in a dream and said: What happened to the mother? He said: She was given eternal joy in exchange for that long weeping. I said: And ʿAlī? He said: ʿAlī is upon good. I said: And you? He went away saying: Can one rely on anything except His pardon? Al-Ḥasan died in this year. Khālid b. Ḥumayd b. Khālid Khālid b. Ḥumayd b. Khālid, Abū Ḥumayd al-Nahrī. He narrated from Qays b. al-Ḥajjāj and Ḥumayd b. Hānī. Ibn Wahb and others narrated from him, and the last to narrate from him in Egypt was Rawḥ b. Ṣalāḥ al-Murādī. He died in Alexandria in this year. Abū Uways al-Madanī al-Aṣbaḥī ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Uways b. Mālik b. [Abī] ʿĀmir, Abū Uways al-Madanī al-Aṣbaḥī. He was the husband of Mālik b. Anas's sister and the son of his paternal cousin, a close relative. He came to Baghdad and narrated there from al-Zuhrī, Muḥammad b. al-Munkadir, Abū al-Zinād, and Hishām b. ʿUrwah. His two sons Abū Bakr and Ismāʿīl narrated from him, as did Shabābah and al-Qaʿnabī. Yaḥyā declared him trustworthy in one report and weak in another. Aḥmad said: He is acceptable. Al-Nasāʾī said: He is not strong. Abū Nuʿaym said: He came to us with slave girls who were singing—meaning singing girls. I said: By God, I will not hear anything from him. ʿUthmān b. Ṭalḥah b. ʿUmar b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Maʿmar al-Taymī ʿUthmān b. Ṭalḥah b. ʿUmar b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Maʿmar al-Taymī. From the people of the city of the Messenger of God ﷺ. One of the governors of Madinah appointed him to the judiciary against his will, and he did not take any stipend for it. He was praiseworthy in conduct and of good repute. He narrated from Muḥammad b. al-Munkadir. When al-Mahdī came to Madinah, he asked to be relieved of the judiciary, and a story occurred in that matter which we have mentioned in the year sixty, and he was relieved. ʿUqbah b. Abī al-Ṣahbāʾ ʿUqbah b. Abī al-Ṣahbāʾ, Abū Khuraym. A client of Bāhilah, from Baṣrah. He heard Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh, Bakr al-Muzanī, al-Ḥasan, and Ibn Sīrīn. Yazīd b. Hārūn narrated from him. He was trustworthy. He moved from Baṣrah and settled in al-Madāʾin, then entered the City of Peace, Baghdad. He died in this year in Baghdad. Muḥammad al-Mahdī b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Manṣūr Muḥammad al-Mahdī b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Manṣūr. He saw a dream before his death indicating it. From Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. al-Barāʾ, who said: ʿAlī b. Yaqṭīn said to me: We went out with al-Mahdī, and one day he said to us: I am entering the pavilion and will sleep there; let no one wake me until I awake. He slept and we slept, and nothing roused us except his weeping. We rose in alarm and said: What is the matter, O Commander of the Faithful? He said: In my sleep just now someone came to me, an old man by God—if he were among a hundred thousand old men I would recognize him. He took hold of the two doorposts and said: It is as if I see this palace whose people have perished, And its corner and dwelling places are desolate. And the chief of the people has gone, after splendor And kingship, to a grave upon which are stones. And nothing remains but his remembrance and his talk, While his wives cry out for him with wailing. They differed about the cause of his death in two opinions: One of them was narrated by Wāḍiḥ, al-Mahdī's steward, who said: Al-Mahdī went out hunting at a village of the villages of Māsabadhān. I remained with him until after the afternoon prayer, then went to my tent, which was far from his. When it was time for the pre-dawn, I rode to perform my duties, and a naked black man met me. He came near and said: Abū Sahl, may God magnify your reward for your master, the Commander of the Faithful. I entered and found him covered in a dome. I said: I left you after the afternoon prayer, and he was in the most joyful and healthiest state; what is the news? They said: The dogs chased a gazelle, and he kept following them. The gazelle plunged through the gate of a ruin, the dogs plunged after it, and the horse plunged after the dogs. The gate of the ruin struck his back, and he died on the spot. The second opinion was mentioned by Abū Nuʿaym al-Marwazī, who said: One of al-Mahdī's slave girls sent to a co-wife of hers milk containing poison while he was sitting in the garden after coming out of ʿĪsābād. He called for it and ate, and the slave girl was afraid to say that it was poisoned. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Rāzī narrated that al-Mahdī was sitting in an upper room of a palace at Māsabadhān, and his slave girl Ḥasanah had taken a pear, placed it in a tray, and poisoned the finest and ripest one, then put its stem back on and placed it at the top of the tray. She sent that with a maid of hers to al-Mahdī's slave girl—who was his favorite—intending to kill her. The maid passed by with the tray, and al-Mahdī saw it. He called her, stretched out his hand, took the pear at the top of the tray, which was the poisoned one, and ate it. He cried out: My belly! Ḥasanah was told the news, and she came striking her face and weeping, saying: I wanted to have you to myself, and I have killed you. He perished that day, and Ḥasanah put mourning garments over her dome. Abū al-ʿAtāhiyah said about that: They went out in embroidered garments and awoke With mourning garments upon them. Every butting one of time Has a day of butting. You are not the one who remains, even if You lived as long as Noah lived. So wail for yourself, If you must wail. Al-Mahdī died in a village called al-Radhdh in Māsabadhān on Thursday night, eight nights remaining of al-Muḥarram, in the year one hundred sixty-nine, and he was forty-three years old. No bier was found for him to be carried on, so he was carried on a door. His son Hārūn prayed over him, and he was buried beneath a walnut tree under which he used to sit, in the place where he died. His caliphate lasted ten years, one month, and half a month; it is also said: ten years and forty-nine days. Nāfiʿ b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Nuʿaym, the Medinan reciter Nāfiʿ b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Nuʿaym, the Medinan reciter, whose kunyah was Abū Nuʿaym; it is also said: Abū Ruwaym; it is said: Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān; and it is said: Abū al-Ḥasan. He was a client of Jaʿūnah b. Shaʿūb al-Laythī, the ally of Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and his origin was from Iṣbahān. He heard from Nāfiʿ, the client of ʿUmar, and ʿĀmir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr. Al-Layth b. Saʿd said: I came to Madinah in the year one hundred ten and found Nāfiʿ the imam of the people in recitation, uncontested. He died in this year; it is also said in the year one hundred fifty-nine, and he taught recitation for one hundred years. Among the notables who died in it was al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Ḥasan b. Ḥasan b. Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, killed during the days of tashrīq, as we mentioned. Al-Rabīʿ b. Yūnus al-Ḥājib, client of al-Manṣūr, his chamberlain and vizier, who also served as vizier for al-Hādī; it is said he also served as vizier for al-Mahdī. Some people impugned his lineage. Al-Khaṭīb included in his biography a hadith from his path, but it is disapproved, and its authenticity from him is questionable. God knows best. His son al-Faḍl b. al-Rabīʿ succeeded him in the office of chamberlain, and the caliph al-Hādī appointed him to it. In it also died ʿUbayd Allāh b. Iyād and Nāfiʿ b. ʿUmar al-Jumaḥī.
