Then the year 164 AH began
✧ Ḥammād al-Rāwiyah Mention of the notables who died in this year: Ḥammād al-Rāwiyah: He is Ḥammād b. Maysarah, a client of Banū Shaybān, and it is said: he is Ḥammād b. Sābūr. He was one of the most knowledgeable people regarding the battle-days of the Arabs, their reports, their poetry, and their genealogies. The Umayyads placed him in advance and increased his gift, and he entered upon al-Manṣūr and al-Mahdī. Al-Madāʾinī related that al-Walīd b. Yazīd said to Ḥammād: "Why were you called al-Rāwiyah (the transmitter), and what has your memorization reached that you deserved this name?" He said: "O Commander of the Faithful, the speech of the Arabs runs upon twenty-eight letters. I can recite to you, upon each letter of them, one hundred odes." He said: "Produce them." So he recited until al-Walīd grew weary, then he appointed someone to listen to him until he fulfilled what he said, and he made his gift abundant. In one narration: he recited to him two thousand and seven hundred odes from the pre-Islamic era, and he ordered for him one hundred thousand dirhams. Al-Ṭirimmāḥ said: "I recited to Ḥammād al-Rāwiyah an ode of mine of sixty verses, and he was silent for an hour, then he said: 'Is this yours?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'The matter is not so.' Then he returned it to me entirely, with an addition of twenty verses which he added on the spot." Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm al-Mawṣilī said: Muṭīʿ b. Iyās and Yaḥyā b. Ziyād entered upon Ḥammād al-Rāwiyah, and behold his lamp was upon three reeds, the top and bottom of them joined by a small rope. Yaḥyā said: "O Ḥammād, you are indeed extravagant and shabby; seek the goods." Muṭīʿ said to him: "Will you not sell this chandelier and buy one cheaper in price, and spend the remainder upon us and upon yourself, and be comfortable?" Yaḥyā said to him: "How good is your opinion of him, and from where would he get this chandelier? It is a trust, or a loan." Muṭīʿ said: "He is indeed great in trustworthiness among people." He said to Yaḥyā: "Despite the greatness of his trustworthiness, how fine is the one who brings this out of his home and entrusts it to someone other than himself." Muṭīʿ said: "I do not think it is a loan or a trust, but I think it is pawned with him for money; otherwise who would bring this out of his house?" Ḥammād said: "Worse than the two of you is the one who brings you into his house." Al-Jāḥiẓ said: Ḥammād al-Rāwiyah, Ḥammād b. al-Zibriqān, Ḥammād ʿAjrad, Wālibah b. al-Ḥubāb, and Bashshār b. Burd al-Lāḥiqī, all of them were accused in their religion. Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Tamīmī al-Muʾaddib al-Baṣrī Shaybān b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Tamīmī al-Muʾaddib al-Baṣrī. Abū Aḥmad al-ʿAskarī mentioned that Shaybān the grammarian is attributed to a sub-tribe called Banū Naḥw b. Shums, with ḍammah on the shīn, one of the sub-tribes of al-Azd. Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Munādī said: The one attributed to the tribe called Naḥw is Yazīd al-Naḥwī, not Shaybān. From Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, he said: Shaybān b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān was trustworthy, and he was the tutor of Sulaymān b. Dāwūd al-Hāshimī. His origin was from al-Baṣrah, then he moved to al-Kūfah. He died in Baghdad in this year, and was buried in the cemetery of Quraysh at Bāb al-Tibn. Thus said Ibn Saʿd. Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn said: He was buried in the cemetery of al-Khayzurān. Abū Maʿmar al-Khaṭīb al-Minqarī al-Baṣrī Shabīb b. Shaybah, Abū Maʿmar al-Khaṭīb al-Minqarī al-Baṣrī. He narrated from al-Ḥasan, ʿAṭāʾ b. Abī Rabāḥ, and Hishām b. ʿUrwah. He was transmitted from by ʿĪsā b. Yūnus, al-Aṣmaʿī, and others. He came to Baghdad in the days of al-Manṣūr and attached himself to him, then to al-Mahdī after him, and he was advanced with them both. Al-Manṣūr said to him: "Admonish me and be brief." He said: "O Commander of the Faithful, Allah did not approve for Himself to place anyone of His creation above you, so do not approve for Him from yourself that there be a servant of His more grateful than you." He said: "By Allah, you have been brief." He left the palace of al-Mahdī, and it was said to him: "How did you leave the people?" He said: "I left the one entering hopeful and the one leaving satisfied." From Mūsā b. Ibrāhīm, he said: Shabīb b. Shaybah led us in the dawn prayer one day and recited al-Sajdah and Hal Atā. When he finished the prayer, a man stood up and said: "May Allah not reward you well on my behalf, for I went out early for a need, and when you commenced the prayer I entered to pray, and you prolonged the prayer until my need escaped me." He said: "And what is your need?" He said: "I came from the frontier regarding a matter in which lay its benefit, and I had promised to go early to the Caliph to obtain it." He said: "I will ride with you." So he rode with him, and entered upon al-Mahdī, and informed him of the news and told him the story. He said: "So what does he want?" He said: "To fulfill his need." So he fulfilled his need and ordered for him thirty thousand dirhams, which he gave to the man, and Shabīb gave him from his own wealth four thousand dirhams, and said to him: "The two surahs did not harm you." From al-Riyāshī, he said: A son of one of the Muhallabids died, and Shabīb b. Shaybah al-Minqarī came to console him, while Bakr b. Ḥabīb al-Sahmī was with him. Shabīb said: "It has reached us that the child does not cease to be muḥtabiṭan at the gate of Paradise, interceding for his parents." Bakr said: "It is only muḥtabiṭan with the undotted ṭāʾ." Shabīb said: "This saying is for me, while no one between its two lava fields is more eloquent than I." Bakr said: "And this is an error. You bring the water of al-Baṣrah, and al-luwab are your people; the saying of others changed you: 'between the two lava fields of al-Madīnah,' meaning the ḥarrah." Abū Aḥmad said: The ḥarrah is land covered with black stones, and it is al-lābah, and the plural is lābāt; if you make it numerous, it is al-luwab. Al-Madīnah has two lava fields on its two sides, but al-Baṣrah has neither lava field nor ḥarrah. He said: And Abū ʿUbayd said: al-muḥtabṭī, without hamzah: the one who is zealous and slow for a thing; and al-muḥtabṭiʾ, with hamzah: the one with a great belly, swollen. The scholars of hadith have spoken about Shabīb. Ibn al-Mubārak was asked: "Should we take from Shabīb?" He said: "Take from him, for he is nobler than to lie." Al-Sājī said: "He is truthful but errs." Abū ʿAlī Ṣāliḥ b. Muḥammad said: "He is acceptable in hadith." As for Ibn Maʿīn, he said: "He is not trustworthy." Abū Dāwūd said: "He is nothing." ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Salamah al-Mājishūn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Salamah al-Mājishūn, and the name of Abū Salamah is Maymūn, a client of Āl al-Hudayr al-Taymī, and the kunyah of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz is Abū ʿAbd Allāh. It is said: Abū al-Aṣbagh. He heard al-Zuhrī, Ibn al-Munkadir, Abū Ḥāzim, and others. Transmitted from him: Wakīʿ, Ibn Mahdī, and Yazīd b. Hārūn. He was a learned jurist, truthful, trustworthy, and firm. He says: al-Mājishūn is Persian, and he was named al-Mājishūn because his cheeks were red. He said: Ibn Wahb: I made the pilgrimage in the year 148, and a crier cried out: "No one gives legal opinions to the people except Mālik b. Anas and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Salamah." From ʿAmr b. Khālid al-Ḥarrānī, he says: Abū Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr made the pilgrimage, and al-Mahdī accompanied him. When he wanted to bid farewell, he said: "O my son, ask me for a gift." He said: "I ask you for an intelligent man." So he gave him ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Salamah al-Mājishūn. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz died in Baghdad in this year. Al-Mahdī came and prayed over him during his caliphate, and he was buried in the cemetery of Quraysh. Al-Mubārak b. Faḍālah b. Abī Umayyah Al-Mubārak b. Faḍālah b. Abī Umayyah, Abū Faḍālah, a client of Zayd b. al-Khaṭṭāb. He narrated from al-Ḥasan b. Abī al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, Thābit, Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl, and many others. Transmitted from him: Yazīd b. Hārūn, ʿAffān, and ʿAlī b. Abī al-Jaʿd. From Mubārak b. Faḍālah, he said: One day I was with Abū Jaʿfar when a man was brought to him, and he ordered him to be killed. I said to myself: A Muslim man is killed while I am present. So I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, shall I not relate to you a hadith I heard from al-Ḥasan?" He said: "And what is it?" I said: "I heard him say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When the Day of Resurrection comes, Allah will gather the people on a plain where the caller will make them hear, and sight will penetrate them. Then a caller from Allah [Exalted] will stand and say: Let the one who has a favor upon Allah stand up. None will stand except the one who forgave.'" So he turned to me and said: "By Allah, did you hear it from al-Ḥasan?" I said: "By Allah, I heard it from al-Ḥasan." He said: "Release him." [The author said:] The statements of Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn differed regarding al-Mubārak. He said once: "Acceptable." And once: "Trustworthy," and once: "Weak." Al-Mubārak died in this year. It is said: in the year 166. In it also died Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Dimashqī, and Sallām b. Miskīn al-Namirī al-Azdī, Abū Rawḥ.
