Then the year 161 AH began
Translation
✧ In it, a man called al-Muqannaʿ rose in Khurasan, in a village of the villages of Marw. He preached metempsychosis, and a great many people followed him in his error. Al-Mahdi dispatched several of his commanders against him and sent many armies, among them Muʿadh b. Muslim, the governor of Khurasan. What happened between him and them we shall relate. Mention of the change in the situation of Abu ʿUbayd Allah In this year the situation of Abu ʿUbayd Allah, al-Mahdi's vizier, changed. We have already mentioned the reason for his attachment to him in the days of al-Mansur and his going with him to Khurasan. Al-Fadl b. al-Rabiʿ related that the mawali used to speak ill of Abu ʿUbayd Allah in al-Mahdi's presence and incite him against him. Abu ʿUbayd Allah's letters used to reach al-Mansur about what he did, and al-Mansur would show them to al-Rabiʿ and write to al-Mahdi enjoining him to look after him and not to listen to what was said about him. Then al-Rabiʿ performed the pilgrimage with al-Mansur when he died, and did what we have mentioned regarding the oath of allegiance to al-Mahdi. When he arrived, he went to Abu ʿUbayd Allah's gate before going to al-Mahdi and before going to his own family. His son al-Fadl said to him: "You leave the Commander of the Faithful and your own house and go to him!" He said: "He is the man's companion, and we ought to treat him differently from the way we used to treat him and stop mentioning our support for him." He stood at his gate from sunset until the last evening prayer was performed. Then he was granted permission and entered, but Abu ʿUbayd Allah did not rise for him; he was reclining. He did not sit, nor did he turn toward him. Al-Rabiʿ wanted to mention to him what he had done in the matter of the oath of allegiance, but Abu ʿUbayd Allah said: "We have heard of your affair." This filled al-Rabiʿ's heart with rancor. When he left, his son al-Fadl said to him: "This man's behavior toward you has done what it did. The right course was not to go to him; and once you went and he kept you waiting, you should have turned back; and once you entered and he did not rise for you, you should have turned back." He said to his son: "You are a fool when you say that I should not have gone; and once I went and was made to wait, that I should turn back; and when I entered and he did not rise for me, that I should turn back. The right course was only what I did. But by God," and he swore a solemn oath, "I will strip off my honor and spend my wealth until I bring about what he hates." He worked against him but found no way to harm him because of his care in matters of religion and his conduct. So he attacked him through his son Muhammad. He kept plotting and insinuating to al-Mahdi, accusing Muhammad of some of his women and of being a zindiq, until the accusation became firmly established in al-Mahdi's mind against his son. So he ordered him brought, and his father was brought out. Then he said to him: "Muhammad, recite!" He could not recite anything well. He said to his father: "Did you not tell me that your son had memorized the Qur'an?" He said: "Yes, but he left me years ago and has forgotten." He said: "Then rise and draw near to God by shedding his blood." He rose to kill his son but stumbled and fell. Al-ʿAbbas b. Muhammad said: "If you see fit to excuse the old man, do so." So he ordered his son to be beheaded. Al-Rabiʿ said to al-Mahdi: "O Commander of the Faithful! You kill his son and still trust him! That is not right." So al-Mahdi became wary of him, and his affair unfolded as we shall mention. Mention of al-Ṣaqlabī's crossing to al-Andalus and his killing In this year, and it is said in the year 160, ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Habib al-Fihri, known as al-Ṣaqlabī—so called because of his height, blue eyes, and blondness—crossed from Ifriqiya to al-Andalus to fight them, so that they would submit to the Abbasid state. He crossed on the coast of Tudmir and wrote to Sulayman b. Yaqẓan asking him to join him, fight ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Umawi, and call for obedience to al-Mahdi. Sulayman was in Barshaluna and did not answer him. Al-Ṣaqlabī was angered at him and marched against his town with the Berbers who were with him. Sulayman defeated him, so al-Ṣaqlabī returned to Tudmir. ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Umawi marched toward him with men and equipment and burned the ships to prevent al-Ṣaqlabī from fleeing. Al-Ṣaqlabī took refuge in an impregnable mountain near Balansiya. The Umawi offered a thousand dinars to anyone who brought him his head. A man among the Berbers assassinated him, killed him, and carried his head to ʿAbd al-Rahman. He gave him a thousand dinars. His killing took place in the year 162. Mention of several events In it, Nasr b. Muhammad b. al-Ashʿath captured ʿAbd Allah b. Marwan in Syria, took him, and brought him to al-Mahdi, who imprisoned him in the dungeon. ʿAmr b. Sahla al-Ashʿari came and claimed that ʿAbd Allah had killed his father. He brought a case against him before the judge ʿAfiyah, and judgment was rendered against ʿAbd Allah. Then ʿAbd al-ʿAziz b. Muslim al-ʿUqayli came to the judge and said: "ʿAmr b. Sahla claims that ʿAbd Allah killed his father. By God, he lies. No one but I killed his father. I killed him at the command of Marwan, and ʿAbd Allah is innocent of his blood." So ʿAbd Allah was left alone, and al-Mahdi did not pursue ʿAbd al-ʿAziz because he had killed him at Marwan's command. The summer expedition of Thumama b. al-Walid In it, Thumama b. al-Walid led the summer expedition, and he encamped at Dabiq. The Byzantines surged with Michael in eighty thousand men. He came to ʿUmq Marʿash, killed, took captives, and gained booty. Then he came to Marʿash and besieged it. He fought them and killed many of the Muslims. ʿIsa b. ʿAli was garrisoned in the fortress of Marʿash, and the Byzantines withdrew to Jayhan. The news reached al-Mahdi, and it weighed heavily on him. He prepared to raid the Byzantines, as we shall mention in the year 162, and because of that the Muslims had no summer expedition. Building of palaces on the road to Makkah In it, al-Mahdi ordered the building of palaces on the road to Makkah, larger than the palaces al-Saffah had built from al-Qadisiyyah to Zubalah. He ordered the construction of cisterns at every watering place among them, the restoration of the milestones and pools, and the digging of wells. Yaqtin b. Musa was in charge of that. He ordered the enlargement of the mosque of al-Basrah, the shortening of the pulpits in the lands, and making them the size of the Prophet's pulpit ﷺ up to the present day. Appointing trustworthy agents in all regions In it, al-Mahdi ordered Yaʿqub b. Dawud to send trustworthy agents to all regions. He did so. Al-Mahdi would not issue a letter to any governor that would take effect until Yaʿqub wrote to his agent to carry it out. Naval expedition In it, al-Ghamr b. al-ʿAbbas led an expedition at sea. Appointment of Nasr b. al-Ashʿath over al-Sind In it, Nasr b. Muhammad b. al-Ashʿath was appointed over al-Sind. Then he was dismissed in favor of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Shihab. ʿAbd al-Malik remained for eighteen days, then was dismissed, and Nasr was reinstated while on the road. Al-Mahdi appointed ʿAfiyah as judge along with Ibn ʿUlathah In it, al-Mahdi appointed ʿAfiyah as judge along with Ibn ʿUlathah in al-Rusafah. Dismissal of al-Fadl b. Salih from al-Jazirah In it, he dismissed al-Fadl b. Salih from al-Jazirah and appointed ʿAbd al-Samad b. ʿAli over it. He appointed ʿIsa b. Luqman over Egypt, Yazid b. Mansur over the Sawad of al-Kufah, Hassan al-Sharawi over al-Mawsil, and Bistam b. ʿAmr al-Taghlibi over Adharbayjan. Death of Nasr b. Malik In it, Nasr b. Malik died of a stroke that afflicted him. Al-Mahdi appointed after him his shurtah, Hamza b. Malik. He removed Aban b. Sadaqah from Harun al-Rashid and placed him with Musa al-Hadi. He placed Yahya b. Khalid b. Barmak with Harun. Dismissal of Abu Damrah from Egypt In it, Muhammad b. Sulayman Abu Damrah was dismissed from Egypt in Dhu al-Hijjah, and Salamah b. Raja' took charge of it. Who led the people in the pilgrimage this year Musa al-Hadi led the people in the pilgrimage, and he was heir apparent. The governor of Makkah, al-Ta'if, and al-Yamamah was Jaʿfar b. Sulayman, and the governor of al-Yaman was ʿAli b. Sulayman. Yazid b. Mansur was over the Sawad of al-Kufah, and Ishaq b. Mansur was over its ahdath.
