Abī Jaʿfar Al-Ḥasan b. Abī Jaʿfar, Abū Saʿīd al-Jaʿfarī, and Jaʿfar's name is ʿAjlān. He transmitted with a chain of narration from Abū al-Zubayr, Thābit al-Bunānī, and others besides them. On the authority of Abū ʿImrān al-Tammār, who said: I went early one day before dawn to the mosque of al-Jaʿfarī, and behold, the door of the mosque was locked, and behold, Ḥasan was sitting supplicating, and behold, there was a clamor in the mosque and a group saying “āmīn” to his supplication. Then he rose, gave the call to prayer, and opened the door of the mosque. I entered, but I saw no one in the mosque. When morning came and the people had dispersed from him, I said to him: O Abū Saʿīd, by God, I saw something astonishing. He said: And what did you see? So I informed him of what I had seen and heard. He said: Those were jinn from the people of Naṣībīn who come and attend the completion of the Qurʾān with me every Friday night. Zamʿah b. Ṣāliḥ al-Makkī Zamʿah b. Ṣāliḥ al-Makkī. He narrated from Salamah b. Wahrām and Ibn Ṭāwūs. And Wakīʿ narrated from him. On the authority of Muʾammal b. Ismāʿīl, who said: Al-Qāsim b. Rāshid al-Shaybānī narrated to us, saying: Zamʿah was staying among us, and he had a wife and daughters. He used to stand and pray long into the night, and when the pre-dawn time came, he called out at the top of his voice: O riders who have halted for the night, do you sleep through all this night? Will you not arise, then depart? Then one would hear from here a weeper, from there a supplicant, from there a reciter, and from there one performing ablution. And when dawn broke, he called out at the top of his voice: At morning the people praise the night journey. Sulaymān al-Khawwāṣ Sulaymān al-Khawwāṣ. He was among the discerning devotees. He said: Yazīd b. Saʿīd — Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz entered upon Sulaymān al-Khawwāṣ and said to him: I see you in darkness. He said: The darkness of the grave is more severe than this. He said: I see you alone. He said: A companion has a right over his companion, and I feared that I would not fulfill the right of my companion. He said: Then Saʿīd brought out a purse containing something and said to him: Spend this, and I declare it lawful for you before God Almighty; it is lawful. He said: I have no need of it. Then he said to him: May God have mercy on you; do you not see what the people are in? A supplication. He said: Then Sulaymān cried out with a loud cry, then said: What is with you, O Saʿīd? You tempt me with this world and you tempt me with religion. What have I to do with supplication? Who am I? Then Saʿīd went out and informed al-Awzāʿī of what had happened, and al-Awzāʿī said: Leave Sulaymān alone. If Sulaymān had been among the Companions, he would have been a proverb. Shuʿbah b. al-Ḥajjāj b. al-Ward Shuʿbah b. al-Ḥajjāj b. al-Ward, Abū Bisṭām al-ʿAtakī, their client, of Wāsiṭī origin, Baṣran by residence. He was born in Wāsiṭ in the year 203 AH, and grew up there, then moved to al-Baṣrah. He saw Al-Ḥasan and Ibn Sīrīn, and heard Qatādah, Yūnus b. ʿUbayd, Ayyūb al-Sijistānī, Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr, Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī, Ṭalḥah b. Muṣarrif, Manṣūr b. al-Muʿtamir, al-Aʿmash and others besides them. Those who narrated from him include: Ayyūb, al-Aʿmash, Ibn ʿUyaynah, Ibn al-Mahdī. He was ten years older than Sufyān al-Thawrī, and he was a scholar, a memorizer of ḥadīth, truthful, ascetic, devout, and knowledgeable in poetry. Al-Aṣmaʿī said: We have not seen anyone more knowledgeable in poetry than Shuʿbah. On the authority of Qarrār Abū Nūḥ, who said: Shuʿbah saw a shirt on me and said: For how much did you buy this? I said: For eight dirhams. He said: Woe to you! Do you not fear God, wearing a shirt for eight dirhams? Why did you not buy a shirt for four dirhams and give four dirhams as charity? Al-Ḍubaʿī said: And Abū ʿAmr Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Ḥīrī narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to us, saying: I heard Muḥammad b. Muʿāwiyah while Sulaymān b. Ḥarb was beside him, saying: Al-Layth b. Saʿd went out one day, and they valued his clothes, his mount, his ring, and what was on him at eighteen thousand dirhams to twenty thousand. Sulaymān b. Ḥarb said: Shuʿbah went out one day, and they valued his donkey, his saddle, and his bridle at eighteen dirhams to twenty dirhams. On the authority of ʿAmr b. ʿAlī al-Fallās, who said: I heard Abū Baḥr al-Bakrāwī saying: I have not seen anyone more devoted to God than Shuʿbah. He worshipped God until his skin dried upon his bone, with no flesh between them. The author of the book said: Shuʿbah was preoccupied with knowledge and did not earn anything of this world. He had brothers who took care of his affairs. One of his brothers bought food from the sultan and lost money in it. Shuʿbah went before al-Mahdī concerning that, and Sufyān al-Thawrī criticized him for entering upon them. Shuʿbah said: His brother was not imprisoned. And on the authority of Abū ʿĀṣim, who said: A brother of Shuʿbah bought from the sultan's food and he and his partners lost, so he was imprisoned for six thousand dinars that fell to him. Shuʿbah went out to al-Mahdī to speak to him about it. When he entered upon him, he said to him: O Commander of the Faithful, Qatādah and Simāk b. Ḥarb recited to me the verses of Umayyah b. Abī al-Ṣalt: Shall I mention my need, or has your modesty sufficed me? Indeed your nature is modesty. A noble one whom morning does not change from noble character, nor evening. Your land is a land of honor built by Banū Taym, and you are a sky for them. So he said: No, O Abū Bisṭām, do not mention it; we have recognized it and fulfilled it for you. Hand over his brother to him, and do not impose anything on him. And on the authority of Muḥammad b. Isḥāq al-Sarrāj, who said: I heard one of our companions saying: Al-Mahdī granted Shuʿbah thirty thousand dirhams, and he distributed it, and he granted him a thousand jarībs in al-Baṣrah. He came to al-Baṣrah but did not find anything that was agreeable to him, so he left it and did not return. Shuʿbah died in al-Baṣrah in this year, at the age of seventy-seven. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣafwān al-Jumaḥī ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣafwān al-Jumaḥī. Governor of al-Madīnah. He died, and Zufar b. ʿĀṣim took his place as governor. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUtbah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd al-Hudhalī al-Masʿūdī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUtbah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd al-Hudhalī al-Masʿūdī. He heard al-Qāsim b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Salamah b. Kuhayl, ʿĀṣim b. Bahdalah and others besides them. Those who narrated from him include: al-Thawrī, Shuʿbah, Ibn ʿUtbah, Wakīʿ, Yazīd b. Hārūn and others besides them. Al-Athram said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal was asked about Abū ʿUmayr and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Masʿūdī: Which of them is more beloved to you? He said: Both are trustworthy. Al-Masʿūdī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān has more ḥadīth of the two. It was said to him: Does he have brothers? He said: Yes. It was said to him: Are they from the descendants of ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd or from the descendants of ʿUtbah? He said: They are from the descendants of ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUtbah b. Masʿūd, and Ibn ʿUtbah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd. Then he said: Ibn ʿUtbah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd. He said: And a man said to al-Masʿūdī: You are from the descendants of ʿUtbah b. Masʿūd, and he became angry and said: I am from the descendants of ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd. They agreed that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān is trustworthy, and they only mentioned that he became confused at the end of his life. He died in the year 160 AH, and it is said: in the year 165 AH, but the former is more correct. Among the notables who died in this year: al-Rabīʿ b. Ṣubayḥ, and Sufyān b. Ḥusayn, one of the companions of al-Zuhrī. And in it died Dāwūd b. Nuṣayr al-Ṭāʾī the ascetic, who was among the companions of Abū Ḥanīfah. And in it died al-Rabīʿ b. Mālik b. Abī ʿĀmir, the paternal uncle of Mālik b. Anas the jurist. His kunyah is Abū Mālik. They were four brothers: the eldest was Anas, the father of Mālik; then Uways, the grandfather of Ismāʿīl b. Uways; then Nāfiʿ; then al-Rabīʿ. And in it died Khalīfah b. Khayyāṭ al-ʿUṣfurī al-Laythī, who is the grandfather of Khalīfah b. Khayyāṭ. (Khayyāṭ with a dotted khāʾ and a yāʾ with two dots beneath.) And in it died al-Khalīl b. Aḥmad al-Baṣrī al-Furhūdī the grammarian, the famous imam in grammar, the teacher of Sībawayh.
