وَعَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَلَّامٍ قَالَ: لَقِيَ رَوْحُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ بَعْضَ الْحُرُوبِ فَقَالَ لِأَبِي دُلَامَةَ - ✧ Abū Dulāmah the poet Mention of the notable figures who died in this year 866 - Zand - with a nūn - b. al-Jawn, Abū Dulāmah the poet. [The author said]: Whoever says Zayd has errored. He was a Kufan, black, a client of Banū Asad. His father was a slave of a man of theirs called Qaṣāqiṣ, who manumitted him. He lived into the last days of the Umayyads - I mean Abū Dulāmah - but he had no prominence in their days. He became distinguished in the days of the Abbasids, attaching himself to al-Saffāḥ, al-Manṣūr, and al-Mahdī. They gave him precedence, favored him, and relished his witticisms. He praised al-Manṣūr and mentioned the killing of Abū Muslim, saying in it: Abū Muslim, you made me fear death, so the tawny lion fell upon you with what you made me fear. Abū Muslim, God does not alter a favor upon His servant until the servant alters it himself. He recited it to al-Manṣūr in a gathering of people, and he said: He has ten thousand dirhams. He ordered it for him. When he was alone with him, he said to him: By God, had you gone beyond it, I would have killed you. It is said that he remained until the caliphate of al-Rashīd, but it is not established. He was naturally gifted and full of witty anecdotes. From Abū Sahl Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Ziyād, who said: I heard Thaʿlab say: When Ḥammādah bt. ʿĪsā, the wife of al-Manṣūr, died, al-Manṣūr and the people with him stood at her grave waiting for the funeral procession to arrive, and Abū Dulāmah was there. Al-Manṣūr turned to him and said: O Abū Dulāmah, what have you prepared for this place of death? He said: Ḥammādah bt. ʿĪsā, O Commander of the Faithful. The people laughed. From al-Aṣmaʿī, who said: Al-Manṣūr ordered Abū Dulāmah to go out toward ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī. Abū Dulāmah said to him: I adjure you by God, O Commander of the Faithful, not to make me witness any of your armies, for I have witnessed nine armies, all of which were routed, and I fear that your army will be the tenth. He laughed at him and excused him. From al-ʿAttābī, who said: Abū Dulāmah entered upon al-Mahdī and asked for a dog, and he gave him one. Then for a leader for it, and he gave him one. Then for a mount. Then for a slave girl to cook the game, and he gave him one. He said: Who will provide for her? Grant me an estate on which I and my family can live. He said: The Commander of the Faithful has granted you one hundred jarībs of cultivated land and one hundred of uncultivated land. He said: What is uncultivated? He said: Ruined land that produces nothing. Abū Dulāmah said: The Commander of the Faithful has granted you five hundred jarībs of uncultivated land in the territory of Banū Asad. He said: Do you have any remaining need? He said: Yes. He said: Permit me to kiss your hand. He said: There is no way to that. He said: By God, you have not turned me away from any need whose loss is easier for me than that. From Muḥammad b. Sallām, who said: Rawḥ b. Ḥātim met some fighting, and he said to Abū Dulāmah - when a man from among them challenged him to single combat - advance toward him. He said: I am not a man of fighting. He said: You must do it. He said: I am hungry, so feed me. He gave him bread and meat, and he advanced. The man attacked him, and Abū Dulāmah said to him: Wait, fellow, what kind of warrior do you see me as? Then he said: Do you know me? He said: No. He said: Do I know you? He said: No. He said: There is no one in the world more foolish than us. He invited him to lunch, and they both ate together and parted. Rawḥ asked about what he had done, and when he was told, he laughed, summoned him, and asked him about the story. He said: I take refuge in Rawḥ from your sending me forth to battle, lest Banū Asad be disgraced through me. Al-Muhallab inherited love of death to you, but I do not inherit love of death from anyone. Sufyān b. Saʿīd b. Masrūq Sufyān b. Saʿīd b. Masrūq, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Thawrī. Of the people of Kufa. He was born in the caliphate of Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik and heard from a great many. He was one of the major imams of the Muslims, with no disagreement about his leadership, trustworthiness, memory, knowledge, and asceticism. From Yūnus b. ʿUbayd, who said: I have not seen anyone more excellent than Sufyān al-Thawrī. Someone said to him: O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, you saw Saʿīd b. Jubayr, Ibrāhīm, ʿAṭāʾ, and Mujāhid, and you say this? He said: It is as I say. I have not seen anyone more excellent than Sufyān al-Thawrī. From ʿAmr b. ʿAlī, who said: I heard ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī say: I have never associated with a man more tender than Sufyān al-Thawrī. I used to watch him night after night, waking in terror, crying: The Fire, the Fire! The remembrance of the Fire has distracted me from sleep and desires. From Ṣāliḥ b. Aḥmad al-ʿIjlī, who said: My father told me: Sufyān entered upon al-Mahdī and said: Peace be upon you, how are you? Then he sat down and said: ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ performed the pilgrimage and spent sixteen dinars on his pilgrimage. You performed the pilgrimage and spent the treasuries on your pilgrimage. He said: What do you want? That I be like you? He said: Above what I am in and below what you are in. His vizier Abū ʿUbayd Allāh said: O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, your letters used to come to us and we would execute them. He said: Who is this? He said: Abū ʿUbayd Allāh, my vizier. He said: Beware of him, for he is a liar. I wrote to you. Then he got up. Al-Mahdī said to him: Where to, O Abū ʿAbd Allāh? He said: I will return. He had left his sandal when he got up, so he returned to take it, then walked on. Al-Mahdī waited for him, but he did not return. He said: He promised us to return but did not. It was said: He returned to take his sandal, and he became angry. He said: All the people are safe except Sufyān al-Thawrī and Yūnus b. Farwah the heretic. He was being sought while he was in the Sacred Mosque. He went and threw himself among the women, and they covered him. It was said to him: Why did you do that? He said: They are more merciful. Then he went out to Basra and stayed there until he died. When he was dying, he said: How hard is exile! See if there is anyone here from my country. They looked and found the two best men from the people of Kufa: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Abjar and al-Ḥasan b. ʿAyyāsh, the brother of Abū Bakr. He entrusted his estate to al-Ḥasan and appointed ʿAbd al-Raḥmān to pray over him. He died in Basra in this year. Al-Muʾammal b. Umayl al-Muḥāribī the poet Al-Muʾammal b. Umayl al-Muḥāribī the poet. He praised al-Mahdī and has poems. From Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās, who said: Al-Muʾammal was mentioned before al-Mubarrad, and he said: They used to say al-Muʾammal the cold. Abū al-ʿAbbās said: In his poetry that is so, but he is a poet. He said: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. al-Muʿaddal recited to me for him: Do not become angry with a people you love, for anger will not save you from your loved ones. Do not contend with them one day, even if they wrong you, for judges, when contended with, prevail. O you who wrong us in your rulings, and wrongdoing is the greatest thing that can be committed and perpetrated, we do not flee from you to others when you wrong us; rather, from you to you is the flight. Al-Marzubānī said: Al-Ṣūlī informed me, saying: It is said that al-Muʾammal, when he said: The sight on the day of al-Ḥīrah healed al-Muʾammal.
