Then the year 159 AH began
✧ Then the year 159 AH began Mention of al-Ḥasan b. Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh In this year al-Mahdī transferred al-Ḥasan b. Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī from his prison. The reason for that is that he was imprisoned together with Yaʿqūb b. Dāwūd in one place. When Yaʿqūb was released and he remained, his suspicion worsened, so he sought a way out. He sent to someone he trusted, and that person dug a tunnel to the place where he was. That reached Yaʿqūb, so he went to Ibn ʿUlāthah the judge, with whom he had established contact, and said: I have sincere counsel for al-Mahdī. He asked him to convey him to Abū ʿUbayd Allāh his vizier so that he might raise it to him. So he brought him before him, and when he asked him about his counsel, he asked him to convey him to al-Mahdī so that he might inform him of it. So he conveyed him to him, and he asked for a private audience. Al-Mahdī informed him of his trust in his vizier and Ibn ʿUlāthah, but he did not say anything until the two of them rose. Then he told him the news of al-Ḥasan, and he sent someone he trusted, and he came to him with verification of the situation. So he ordered that al-Ḥasan be transferred, and he was transferred. Then a ruse was contrived for him afterwards, and he fled and was sought, but he was not caught. Al-Mahdī summoned Yaʿqūb and asked him about him, and he informed him that he did not know his location, and that if he granted him amnesty, he would bring him to him. So he granted him amnesty and guaranteed him good treatment. Then he said to him: Leave off seeking him, for that will alarm him. So he left off seeking him. Then Yaʿqūb advanced in favor with al-Mahdī, and al-Ḥasan b. Ibrāhīm was brought before him. Mention of Yaʿqūb's advancement in favor with al-Mahdī His arrival to him has already been mentioned. When al-Mahdī brought him before him concerning the matter of al-Ḥasan b. Ibrāhīm, as has preceded, he said to him: O Commander of the Faithful! You have extended your justice to your subjects, dealt fairly with them, and treated them well, so their hopes have become great. But there remain matters which, if I mentioned them to you, you would not abandon looking into them, and matters behind your door that are being done without your knowledge. If you grant me access to you, I will raise them. So he commanded that, and he would enter upon him whenever he wished, and raise to him counsels regarding good and noble matters, such as the affairs of the frontiers, the building of fortresses, the strengthening of warriors, the marriage of unmarried men, the ransoming of captives and prisoners, the payment of debts on behalf of debtors, and charity to the self-restrained poor. Thus he gained favor with him, and his status rose, until the status of Abū ʿUbayd Allāh fell, and he was imprisoned. Al-Mahdī wrote a rescript stating that he had taken him as a brother in God, and he gave him a gift of one hundred thousand. Mention of the appearance of al-Muqannaʿ in Khurāsān In this year, before the death of Ḥumayd b. Qaḥṭabah, al-Muqannaʿ appeared in Khurāsān. He was a one-eyed, short man from the people of Marw, called Ḥakīm. He had a face made of gold and put it over his face so that he would not be seen, so he was called al-Muqannaʿ. He claimed divinity, but he did not reveal that to all his companions. He used to say: God created Adam, then He transformed into his form, then into the form of Noah, and so on down to Abū Muslim al-Khurāsānī, then He transformed into Hāshim, and Hāshim in his claim is al-Muqannaʿ. He held the doctrine of metempsychosis, and a host of misguided people followed him. They would prostrate to him from whatever direction they were, and they would say in battle: O Hāshim, help us. A great many people gathered to him, and they fortified themselves in the fortress of Basnām and Sanjardah, which is among the rural districts of Kish. The Mubayyiḍah appeared in Bukhārā and al-Ṣughd as supporters of him, and the infidel Turks aided him, and they raided the property of the Muslims. He used to believe that Abū Muslim was superior to the Prophet ﷺ, and he condemned the killing of Yaḥyā b. Zayd, claiming that he would kill his killers. They gathered at Kish and seized some of its castles and the fortress of Nūwākith. Abū al-Nuʿmān, al-Junayd, and Layth b. Naṣr fought them time after time, and they killed Ḥassān b. Tamīm b. Naṣr b. Sayyār and Muḥammad b. Naṣr and others. Jibrāʾīl b. Yaḥyā and his brother Yazīd were sent against them, but they were occupied with the Mubayyiḍah who were in Bukhārā. They fought them for four months in the city of Būmijkath, and he breached its walls against them, killing seven hundred of them, and he killed al-Ḥakam. Their defeated remnants joined al-Muqannaʿ, and Jibrāʾīl pursued them and fought them. Then al-Mahdī dispatched Abū ʿAwn to fight al-Muqannaʿ, but he did not exert himself fully in fighting him, and he appointed Muʿādh b. Muslim. Mention of several events In this year al-Mahdī dismissed Ismāʿīl from al-Kūfah and appointed over it Isḥāq b. al-Ṣabbāḥ al-Kindī then al-Ashʿathī. It is also said: ʿĪsā b. Luqmān b. Muḥammad b. Ḥāṭib al-Jumaḥī. In it he dismissed Saʿīd b. Daʿlaj from the police of al-Baṣrah and ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan from the prayer, and appointed in their place ʿAbd al-Malik b. Ayyūb b. In it ships burned at the palace of ʿĪsā in Baghdādh with what was in them, and many people burned. In it Maṭar, the freedman of al-Manṣūr, was dismissed from Miṣr, and Abū Ḍamrah Muḥammad b. Sulaymān was appointed over it. In it al-ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad raided the Roman summer expedition, with al-Ḥasan al-Waṣīf in command of the vanguard. They reached Anqarah and conquered a city of the Romans and a subterranean prison. No one of the Muslims was harmed, and they returned safe. In it Ḥamzah b. Yaḥyā governed Sijistān, and Jibrāʾīl b. Yaḥyā governed Samarqand, and he built its wall and dug its moat. Dismissal of ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAlī from al-Madīnah In it he dismissed ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAlī from al-Madīnah and appointed over it Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Kathīrī. Then he dismissed him and appointed in his place Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ṣafwān al-Jumaḥī. Building of the wall of al-Ruṣāfah In it al-Mahdī built the wall of al-Ruṣāfah and its mosque, and dug its moat. Al-Mahdī's release of those who were in al-Manṣūr's prisons In it al-Mahdī released those who were in al-Manṣūr's prisons, except those who had a claim against them of blood or property, or those who spread corruption in the land. Among those he released was Yaʿqūb b. Dāwūd, a freedman of Banū Sulaym. Those who led the pilgrimage this year This year Yazīd b. Manṣūr, the maternal uncle of al-Mahdī, led the people in the pilgrimage upon his arrival from al-Yaman. Al-Mahdī had written to him to come to him and to take charge of the pilgrimage season. The governor of al-Madīnah was ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣafwān al-Jumaḥī; over the police of al-Kūfah was Isḥāq b. al-Ṣabbāḥ al-Kindī; over its land tax was Thābit b. Mūsā; over its judiciary was Sharīk; over the prayer of al-Baṣrah was ʿAbd al-Malik b. Ayyūb; over its police was ʿUmārah b. Ḥamzah; over its judiciary was ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan; over the districts of Dijlah, the districts of al-Ahwāz, and the districts of Fāris was ʿUmārah b. Ḥamzah. Over al-Sind was Bisṭām b. ʿAmr; over al-Yaman was Rajāʾ b. Rawḥ; over al-Yamāmah was Bishr b. al-Mundhir; over Khurāsān was Abū ʿAwn ʿAbd al-Malik b. Yazīd. Ḥumayd b. Qaḥṭabah had died in it, so al-Mahdī appointed Abū ʿAwn. Over al-Jazīrah was al-Faḍl b. Ṣāliḥ; over Ifrīqiyah was Yazīd b. Ḥātim; over Miṣr was Abū Ḍamrah Muḥammad b. Sulaymān. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān's dispatch to Shaqnā in Shant Barriyyah (In it Shaqnā had spread throughout the regions of Shant Barriyyah, so ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the ruler of al-Andalus, dispatched an army against him. He left his place and climbed the mountains as was his custom, so the army returned from him.) Al-Mahdī's receiving the oath of allegiance for the succession to al-Hādī then al-Rashīd When al-Mahdī took office, he asked ʿĪsā b. Mūsā—who was the heir apparent after al-Mahdī—to remove himself from the succession, but he refused al-Mahdī. He asked to reside in the land of al-Kūfah at an estate of his, and he gave him permission. Rawḥ b. Ḥātim had been established over the governorship of al-Kūfah, and he wrote to al-Mahdī: ʿĪsā b. Mūsā does not attend the Friday prayer or the congregational prayer with the people except two months of the year, and when he comes, he enters with his mounts into the interior of the gate of the mosque, and his mounts drop dung where the people pray. Al-Mahdī wrote to him to place timber at the mouths of the streets so that the people could not reach the congregational mosque except on foot. ʿĪsā b. Mūsā learned of that, so before Friday he bought the house of al-Mukhtār b. Abī ʿUbayd from his heirs, and it was adjacent to the mosque. He would come to it from Thursday, and when it was time for the Friday prayer, he would ride a donkey to the gate of the mosque, dismount, attend the prayer with the people, and reside permanently in al-Kūfah with his family. Then al-Mahdī pressed ʿĪsā b. Mūsā to remove himself from the succession, threatening him if he did not do it and promising him if he did. So he answered him to that, and he gave him great fiefs and granted him ten million dirhams—it is also said twenty million. Al-Mahdī received the oath of allegiance for his two sons after him: Mūsā al-Hādī, then Hārūn al-Rashīd. In it al-Mahdī performed the pilgrimage, and the custodians of the Kaʿbah reported to him that they feared its demolition because of the many coverings upon it. So he commanded that it be stripped, and they limited it to the covering of al-Mahdī. Ice was transported to al-Mahdī in Makkah. Al-Dhahabī said: (That was never accomplished for any king ever.)
