✧ Shaybān al-Rāʿī. Sufyān al-Thawrī performed the pilgrimage with him, and they encountered a lion. Shaybān rubbed its ear and said: Were it not for the place of fame, I would not have put my provisions except on its back. From Muḥammad b. Ḥamzah al-Rabaḍī, who said: Shaybān al-Rāʿī, when he became ritually impure and had no water, would call upon his Lord, and a cloud would come and shade him, and he would wash from it. And he used to go to the Friday prayer and draw a line around his sheep, and he would return and find them not having moved. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAyyāsh b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū al-Jarrāḥ al-Hamdānī al-Kūfī, known as al-Mantūf. Al-Khaṭīb said: Ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated from al-Shaʿbī, and al-Haytham b. ʿAdī narrated from him. He was a transmitter of reports and courtly culture. He was one of the companions of Abū Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr, and he settled in Baghdad in the dwellings of the Companions in the area of the bank of al-Ṣarāh. He said: It is said that the Tigris rose and the water surrounded his house. Al-Manṣūr rode out to look at the water, with Ibn ʿAyyāsh with him, and he saw his house in the middle of the water. He said: Whose house is this? He said: It belongs to your client, O Commander of the Faithful. Al-Manṣūr said: “And the wave came between them, so he was among the drowned,” and Ibn ʿAyyāsh said to him, and he was bold with him: I do not think the Commander of the Faithful memorizes any verse of the Qurʾān other than it. He laughed at him and ordered a gift for him. Al-Waḍḍāḥ b. Ḥabīb b. Yazīd al-Tamīmī said, from his father: I was one day with al-Manṣūr, and ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAyyāsh al-Mantūf, and ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Rabīʿ al-Ḥārithī, and Ismāʿīl b. Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qasrī. Al-Manṣūr had appointed Salm b. Qutaybah over al-Baṣrah, and he appointed a client of his over the districts of al-Baṣrah and al-Ubullah. A letter came from the client of Abū Jaʿfar informing that Salm had struck him with whips. Abū Jaʿfar became furious, and he struck one of his hands on the other and said: Salm dares against me? By God, I will make him an exemplary punishment and a warning. He began reading letters before him. He said: Ibn ʿAyyāsh raised his head—and he was the boldest of us with him—and said: O Commander of the Faithful, Salm did not strike your client with his own strength or the strength of his son, but you entrusted him with your sword, and you raised him upon your pulpit. Your client wanted to lower from Salm what you had raised, and to corrupt what you had made, and he would not tolerate that for him. O Commander of the Faithful, the anger of the Arab is in his head, and when he is angry he does not calm down until he brings it out with his tongue or his hand. And the anger of the Nabataean is in his anus, and when he defecates his anger departs. Abū Jaʿfar laughed and said: May God disfigure you, O Mantūf. And he refrained from punishing Salm. Al-Mantūf died in this year. Al-Aswad al-Makkī. Ibn al-Mubārak said: I arrived in Makkah, and the people had suffered drought from rain, and they were praying for rain in the Sacred Mosque. I was among the people near the gate of Banū Shaybah, when a black youth approached wearing two pieces of sackcloth, having wrapped one of them as a loincloth and thrown the other over his shoulder. He went to a hidden spot beside me, and I heard him say: My God, faces have become worn by the abundance of sins and evil deeds, and You have withheld the rain of the sky to discipline creation thereby. I ask You, O Forbearing One, Possessor of deliberateness, O You whose servants know from Him nothing but good, give them drink now, now. Ibn al-Mubārak said: He kept saying “now, now” until the sky became overcast with clouds, and rain came from every place. He sat in his place glorifying God, and I began to weep. When he arose, I followed him until I knew his place. I came to Fuḍayl b. ʿIyāḍ, and he said to me: Why do I see you distressed? I said: Others have preceded us to God, and He has taken charge of them instead of us. He said: And what is that? I told him the story. He cried out and fell down, and said: Woe to you, O Ibn al-Mubārak, take me to him. I said: The time is narrow, and I will investigate his affair. When it was the next day, I prayed the dawn prayer and went out to the place, and there was an old man at the door, a mat spread for him, and he was sitting. When he saw me, he recognized me and said: Welcome to you, O ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, what is your need? I said to him: I need a black youth. He said: Yes, I have several; choose whichever of them you wish. He called out: O boy, and a sturdy youth came out. He said: This is Maḥmūd of good outcome; I approve him for you. I said: This is not my need. He kept bringing them out to me one by one until he brought out the youth. When I saw him, my eyes welled up. He said: Is this he? I said: Yes. He said: There is no way to sell him. I said: Why? He said: I have sought blessing from his presence in this house, for he costs me nothing. I said: From where is his food? He said: He earns from palm-leaf plaiting half a dāniq or less or more, and that is his sustenance. If he sells it in his day, fine; otherwise he fasts that day. The other youths informed me that he does not sleep this long night, and does not mix with any of them, busy with himself, and my heart has loved him. I said to him: Should I return to Sufyān al-Thawrī and Fuḍayl b. ʿIyāḍ without having my need fulfilled? He said: Your coming to me is a great matter; take him for whatever you wish. He said: So I bought him and headed toward the house of Fuḍayl. I walked for a while, and he said to me: O my master. I said: At your service. He said: Do not say “at your service” to me, for the slave is more entitled to answer the master. I said: What is your need, my beloved? He said: I am weak of body; I cannot endure service, and you had ample choice in others. Someone stronger than me was brought out to you. I said: God forbid that He should see me using you as a servant. Rather, I will buy you a house, marry you off, and serve you myself. He said: He wept. I said: What makes you weep? He said: You would not do this with me unless you had seen some of my connections with God Almighty; otherwise why did you choose me from among the youths? I said to him: You have no need of this. He said to me: I ask you by God to tell me. I said: Because your supplication was answered. He said to me: I reckon you, God willing, a righteous man. God, Mighty and Majestic, has chosen ones among His creation whose state He does not disclose except to whom He loves among His servants, and He does not reveal them except to one with whom He is pleased. Then he said to me: Do you mind waiting for me a little, for I have some rakʿahs remaining from last night. I said: This is the house of Fuḍayl, close by. He said: No. Here is more beloved to me. The command of God, Mighty and Majestic, is not delayed. He entered through the gate of the sellers into the mosque, and he kept praying until he completed what he wanted. Then he turned to me and said: O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, do you have any need? I said: Why? He said: Because I want to depart. I said: To where? He said: To the hereafter. I said: Do not do it; let me take joy in you. He said to me: Life was only pleasant when the transaction was between me and Him, Exalted. As for when you have become aware of it, others will become aware of it, and I have no need of that. Then he fell on his face, saying: My God, take me to You now, now. I drew near to him, and he had died. By God, I never remember him except that my grief grows long and the world becomes small in my eye. Al-Wāqidī said: A severe epidemic struck the people in this year. Many people and a great multitude died in it, among them Aflaḥ b. Ḥumayd, Ḥaywah b. Shurayḥ, Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ in Makkah, and Zufar b. al-Hudhayl b. Qays b. Sulaym b. Qays b. Mukammil b. Dhuhl b. Dhuʾayb b. Judhaymah b. ʿAmr b. Ḥunjūd b. Jundab b. al-ʿAnbar b. ʿAmr b. Tamīm b. Murr b. Udd b. Ṭābikhah b. Ilyās b. Muḍar b. Nizār b. Maʿadd b. ʿAdnān, al-Tamīmī al-ʿAnbarī al-Kūfī, the Ḥanafī jurist. He was the earliest of Abū Ḥanīfah's companions to die, and the most given to using analogy. He was a devoted worshipper, occupied at first with the science of ḥadīth, then jurisprudence and analogy prevailed over him. He was born in the year 116 and died in the year 158 at the age of forty-two, may God have mercy on him. In it also died Ūrālī, king of Galicia; his reign was six years, and after him ruled Shiyālūn. In it also died Mālik b. Mighwal, the Bajalī jurist, in al-Kūfah, and Ḥaywah b. Shurayḥ b. Muslim al-Ḥaḍramī, the Egyptian.
