Then the year 158 AH began
وَفِيهَا حَبَسَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْإِمَامُ، وَهُوَ أَمِيرُ مَكَّةَ، جَمَاعَةً أَمَرَ الْمَنْصُورُ بِحَبْسِهِمْ، وَهُمْ رَجُلٌ مِنْ آلِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ كَانَ بِمَكَّةَ، وَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، وَعَبَّادُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، وَ سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ، ثُمَّ أَطْلَقَهُمْ مِنَ الْحَبْسِ بِغَيْرِ أَمْرِ الْمَنْصُورِ، فَغَضِبَ. وَكَانَ سَبَبُ إِطْلَاقِهِمْ أَنَّهُ أَنْكَرَ، وَقَالَ: عَمَدْتَ إِلَى ذِي رَحِمٍ فَحَبَسْتَهُ، يَعْنِي بَعْضَ وَلَدِ عَلِيٍّ، وَإِلَى نَفَرٍ مِنْ أَعْلَامِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَحَبَسْتَهُمْ، وَتَقْدُمُ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، فَلَعَلَّهُ يَأْمُرُ بِقَتْلِهِمْ، فَيَشُدُّ سُلْطَانَهُ، وَأَهْلَكَ فَأَطْلِقْهُمْ، وَتَحَلَّلْ مِنْهُمْ، فَلَمَّا قَارَبَ الْمَنْصُورُ مَكَّةَ أَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بِهَدَايَا فَرَدَّهَا عَلَيْهِ.
Translation
✧ In this year, Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Imām, the governor of Makkah, imprisoned a group whom al-Manṣūr had ordered to be imprisoned. They were a man from the family of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib who was in Makkah, Ibn Jurayj, ʿAbbād b. Kathīr, and Sufyān al-Thawrī. Then he released them from prison without the order of al-Manṣūr, and he became angry. The reason for their release was that he disapproved, saying: "You have seized a relative and imprisoned him—meaning one of the descendants of ʿAlī—and a group of the notable scholars of the Muslims and imprisoned them. You are anticipating the Commander of the Faithful; perhaps he will order their execution, and then his authority will be strengthened, and you will be destroyed. So release them and absolve yourself from them." When al-Manṣūr approached Makkah, Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm sent him gifts, but he returned them to him.
