The story of Zakariyyā and Yaḥyā (peace be upon them both)
Translation
✧ The story of the prophet of Allah Zakariyyā ﷺ: Allah Almighty commanded His Messenger ﷺ to relate to the people the account of Zakariyyā ﷺ and what pertained to his affair, and that was when Zakariyyā ﷺ took charge of Maryam bt. ʿImrān. Each time he entered upon her in her sanctuary he found with her fruit out of its season, or in its season, and this is among the charismata of the friends of Allah. He knew that the One who provides a thing out of its season is able to provide him with a son even though he had reached an advanced age. Thereupon Zakariyyā called upon his Lord. He said, "My Lord, grant me from Yourself goodly offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication. And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren." It has been said that by 'successors' the ʿaṣaba (male relatives) are meant, and it is as if he feared their conduct after him among the Children of Israel in a manner not in accordance with Allah's law and obedience. So he asked for the existence of a son from his own loins who would be righteous, God-fearing, and pleasing. For this reason he said, "So grant me from Yourself," that is, from You, by Your power and strength. "A protector who will inherit me," that is, in prophethood and governance among the Children of Israel, "and inherit from the family of Yaʿqūb, and make him, my Lord, pleasing." He means: just as his fathers and ancestors from the descendants of Yaʿqūb were prophets, make him like them in the honor with which You honored them, namely prophethood and revelation. At that point Zakariyyā said, "My Lord, appoint for me a sign," a mark by which I may recognize the time when my wife conceives this child. He said, "Your sign is that you shall not speak to people for three nights, [while] sound," and silence will seize you so that you cannot speak except by gesture despite bodily health and the absence of illness. When he was given this good tidings, he came out rejoicing and signalled to his people, "Glorify Allah morning and evening." And Allah granted him a son in old age. His wife had been barren in the time of her youth, so that no one should despair of Allah's bounty and mercy, nor lose hope in His bounty, exalted and hallowed be He. Thus Allah Almighty granted him Yaḥyā ﷺ. Moreover, the report from Wahb b. Munabbih differs concerning the death of Zakariyyā ﷺ: whether he was killed by being cut with a saw when he fled from his people and hid inside a tree, and they cut it down with him inside it, or whether he died a natural death ﷺ.
