Translation
✧ In this year, al-Manṣūr alighted at his palace known as al-Khuld on the Tigris. He named it al-Khuld by way of comparison to the Garden of Eternity, and said: “I built it only so that I might look upon the water, for it clears the sight.” Its site was behind the Khurasan Gate, and it has become obliterated, so there is no trace of it nor any remnant. Abū Manṣūr al-Qazzāz informed us, saying: Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. ʿAlī [b. Thābit] informed us, saying: ʿAlī b. Muḥammad al-Muʿaddil informed us, saying: Ibn Ṣafwān informed us, saying: Abū Bakr al-Qurashī informed us, saying: Ibn Jahwar narrated to me, saying: I passed by al-Khuld with ʿAlī b. [Abī] Hāshim al-Kūfī, and he looked at the traces, then stopped reflectively and said: They built and said, “We shall not die,” but the builder built for ruin. No man of reason, in what I have seen, is at ease with life. Abū Manṣūr informed us, saying: Aḥmad b. ʿAlī informed us, saying: Ibn Rizq informed us, saying: ʿUthmān b. Aḥmad informed us, saying: Ibn al-Barāʾ narrated to us, saying: ʿAlī b. Abī Maryam narrated to us, saying: I passed by the small market of ʿAbd al-Wahhāb after its dwellings had fallen into ruin, and on one of its walls was written: These are the dwellings of a people whom I knew in a life of ease and plenty that had no equal. The calamities of time cried out against them, and they were turned away to the graves, so there is no trace of them nor any remnant.
