✧ Then the year 156 AH began. Account of the rebellion of the people of Ishbīliyyah against ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Umawī. In this year, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Umawī, ruler of al-Andalus, marched to wage war against Shaqnā and to attack the fortress of Shayṭarān. He besieged it and pressed it hard, but its defender fled into the desert as was his wont. He had left his son Sulaymān as his deputy in Qurṭubah, and a letter from him reached him informing him that the people of Ishbīliyyah, with ʿAbd al-Ghaffār and Ḥaywah b. Mulābis, had renounced obedience to him and rebelled against him, and the Yemenīs in the city joined them. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān returned without entering Qurṭubah, alarmed by what he heard of their gathering and their numbers. He sent ahead his cousin ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmar, who was the flame of the Marwānid house, while ʿAbd al-Raḥmān remained behind him as a reinforcement. When ʿAbd al-Malik drew near the people of Ishbīliyyah, he sent ahead his son Umayyah to learn their condition. He saw them on the alert and returned to his father, who blamed him for showing weakness and struck off his head. Then he gathered his household and his close followers and said to them: “We have been driven from the east to the farthest corner of this land, and we are envied for a morsel that barely keeps life in us. Break the scabbards of your swords, for death is preferable or victory.” They did so, and he charged at their head and routed the Yemenīs and the people of Ishbīliyyah. After that, the Yemenīs never rose again. ʿAbd al-Malik was wounded. The news reached ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and he came to him while his wound was flowing with blood and his sword was dripping with blood, and his hand had stuck to the hilt of his sword. He kissed him between the eyes and rewarded him well, saying: “O cousin, I have given my son and heir apparent Hishām your daughter so-and-so in marriage, and I have given her such and such, and I have given you such and such and your sons such and such, and I have granted you and them estates, and I have appointed you all to the vizierate.” This ʿAbd al-Malik was the one who compelled ʿAbd al-Raḥmān to cut off the khuṭbah of al-Manṣūr, saying to him: “Cut it off, or I will kill myself!” For he had delivered the khuṭbah in his name for ten months, and then he cut it off. ʿAbd al-Ghaffār and Ḥaywah b. Mulābis had escaped being killed. Then in the year 157 AH, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān marched to Ishbīliyyah and killed many of those who had been with ʿAbd al-Ghaffār and Ḥaywah, and returned. Because of this battle and the treachery of the Arabs, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān inclined toward acquiring slaves.
