Yazīd b. Sharāḥīl, Abū Khuzaymah: He entered upon ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith b. Jazʾ, and he narrated from Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb. Narrated from him al-Mufaḍḍal b. Faḍālah, Jarīr b. Ḥāzim, and Rishdīn b. Saʿd. He was appointed judge in Egypt after the amir ʿAbd al-Malik b. Yazīd Abū ʿAwn had offered him the sword. He died in this year. Ashʿab the greedy, and it is said his name was Shuʿayb, and his father's name was Jubayr: Ashʿab was born in the year nine of the Hijrah. Ashʿab was the maternal uncle of al-Aṣmaʿī, and it was said: the maternal uncle of al-Wāqidī. Regarding his kunyah there are two opinions, one of them: Abū al-ʿAlāʾ, and the second: Abū Isḥāq. Regarding his mother's name there are three opinions, one of them: Jaʿdah, the freedwoman of Asmāʾ bt. Abī Bakr, the second: Umm Ḥumaydah, and the third: Umm Ḥamīdah with a fatḥah on the ḥāʾ. They agreed that he was a mawlā, and they differed regarding his patron according to four opinions: one of them: ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān, the second: Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ, the third: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr, and the fourth: Fāṭimah bt. al-Ḥusayn. He lived a long time, and he had reached the era of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān. He recited the Qurʾān and practiced devotion. He narrated from ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar, al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad, Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh, and ʿIkrimah. He died in this year. He has amusing reports. Abū al-ʿAbbās Nasīm al-Kātib said: It was said to Ashʿab: "You sought knowledge and sat with people, then you left it. If only you would sit with us so we could hear from you." He said: "Yes." So he sat with them, and they said: "Narrate to us." He said: "I heard ʿIkrimah say: I heard Ibn al-ʿAbbās say: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'Two qualities do not combine in a believer.'" Then he fell silent. They said: "What are the two qualities?" He said: "ʿIkrimah forgot one and I forgot the other." Al-Wāqidī said: I met Ashʿab one day, and he said to me: "O son of Wāqid, you have found a dinar, so what should I do with it?" I said: "Announce it?" He said: "Glory be to God." I said: "Then what is the right course?" He said: "Buy a shirt with it and announce it." I said: "Then no one will recognize it." He said: "That is what I want." [The author said]: Amusing sayings and anecdotes have been transmitted from Ashʿab. Al-Haytham b. ʿAdī said: Fāṭimah bt. al-Ḥusayn apprenticed him to the cloth merchants. He was asked: "How far have you reached in knowledge of cloth?" He said: "I am good at unfolding and not good at folding, and I hope to learn folding." He passed by a man making a large dish, and said: "Make it wide, perhaps they will send us a gift in it." Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Muqrī said: Ashʿab said: "I never went out in a funeral procession and saw two people consulting together without thinking that the deceased had bequeathed something to me." Sulaymān al-Shādhakūnī said: I had a young son in the Qurʾān school. One day he came back to me and said: "O father, shall I tell you something amusing?" I said: "Go ahead." He said: "I was reciting to the teacher that my father invites you, and Ashʿab the greedy was sitting with him. He put on his sandals and said: 'Walk in front of me.' I said: 'I am only reciting my portion.' He said: 'I am amazed that you will succeed or that your father will succeed.'" Saʿīd b. Yazīd, Abū Shujāʿ al-Qitbānī: Al-Layth b. Saʿd and Ibn al-Mubārak narrated from him. He was trustworthy, one of the devoted, diligent worshippers. When morning came, he would bind his shin from the length of standing in prayer. He died in Alexandria [in this year]. Sulaymān b. Abī Sulaymān al-Mūriyānī, mawlā of Banū Sulaym: He had long been with Ibn Hubayrah, then al-Manṣūr appointed him as his scribe. Then he informed al-Manṣūr that Khālid, the brother of Abū Ayyūb, who was in al-Ahwāz, had amassed great wealth. Al-Manṣūr became angry with him and imprisoned him and his brother Khālid and his brother's sons, and cut off the hands of his brother's sons and killed them, as was previously mentioned. Abū Ayyūb [Sulaymān] was generous and munificent. Ibn Shubrumah said: I married my son for two thousand dirhams and could not obtain them. I thought about whom to approach, and Abū Ayyūb al-Mūriyānī came to my heart. I entered upon him and he said: "You shall have two thousand." When I rose to leave, he said: "The dower is two thousand, so where is the trousseau?" Then he said: "Two thousand for the trousseau." I went to leave, and he said: "The dower and the trousseau, so where is the servant? And you shall have two thousand for the servant." I went to leave, and he said: "And the shaykh gets nothing? You shall have two thousand." I kept rising and he kept seating me until I left him with fifty thousand. Al-ʿAbbās b. Ibrāhīm said: When al-Manṣūr summoned Abū Ayyūb, he would turn pale and tremble, and when he left him his color would return. It was said to him: "We see you, despite your frequent visits to the Commander of the Faithful and his familiarity with you, tremble when you enter upon him." He said: "My likeness and yours in this is as the likeness of a falcon and a rooster who debated. The falcon said to the rooster: 'I know none less loyal than you.' He said: 'How so?' He said: 'An egg is taken and your family broods over you, and you emerge into their hands, and they feed you from their palms until, when you grow up, no one comes near you but you fly here and there and cry out. When you climb onto the wall of a house where you have been for years, you fly away from it and leave it and go to another. As for me, I am taken from the mountains when I am grown, and I am fed a little and made tame for a day or two, then I am released to hunt, and I fly alone and seize it and bring it to my master.' The rooster said to him: '[The argument has left you.] If you had seen a falcon on a spit you would never return to them. As for me, at every moment I see spits full of roosters and I spend the night among them. So I am more loyal than you. If you knew of al-Manṣūr what I know, you would be in a worse state than I when he summons you.'" Abū Ayyūb died in this year. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb al-ʿAdawī al-Madanī: He was one of the most handsome of people in appearance. From Abū Hurayrah b. Jaʿfar al-Makhzūmī: al-Dībāj Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb both sought the hand of a woman of Quraysh. She was given conflicting reports about their beauty, so she kept asking and investigating until she went out intending the evening prayer in the mosque. She saw them standing in the moonlight reproaching each other about her matter. She looked at the whiteness of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and his tall stature, and married him. He gathered the people and held a wedding feast for her entry. He sent to Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr and invited him among those he invited, honored him, and seated him in a noble seat. When the people finished, Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr blessed him and left, saying: While I was hoping to be her guardian, I was struck by a hot vein from her wedding feast. Al-Zubayr said: Muṣʿab b. ʿUthmān, Muḥammad b. al-Ḍaḥḥāk al-Khizāmī, Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan al-Makhzūmī, and others narrated to me: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbd Allāh was among those captured with Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥasan. When Muḥammad was killed, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz was carried to al-Manṣūr in irons. When he entered upon him, he said to him: "It did not suffice you to rebel against me until you took out with you three swords from your sons." ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said to him: "O Commander of the Faithful, maintain my kinship ties, pardon me, and preserve in me ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb." He said: "I will do so." So he pardoned him. Then ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Rabīʿ said to him: "O Commander of the Faithful, strike his neck so that the youths of Quraysh do not aspire against you." Al-Manṣūr said to him: "If I kill this one, over whom would you like me to be appointed?" ʿAlī b. Ṣāliḥ b. Ḥayy: He and his brother al-Ḥasan were born twins in one womb. ʿAlī had preceded by an hour. Al-Ḥasan used to honor him and say: "Abū Muḥammad said." ʿAlī was very devout in worship, and he transmitted from a group of the Successors. He died in this year. Al-Ḥasan b. Ḥayy said: My brother ʿAlī said to me on the night he died: "Give me water to drink," while I was standing praying. When I finished the prayer, I brought him water and said: "O my brother." He said: "At your service." I said: "This is water." He said: "I drank just now." I said: "Who gave you drink when there is no one in the room but me and you?" He said: "Gabriel came to me just now with water and gave me drink, and said to me: 'You and your brother and your father are with the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous.'" And his soul departed, may God have mercy on him. Al-Faḍl b. ʿAṭiyyah al-Khurāsānī al-Marwazī, mawlā of Banū ʿAbs: He narrated from Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh. From Sallām b. Sālim, he said: I accompanied al-Faḍl b. ʿAṭiyyah to Makkah. When we departed from Fayd, he woke me in the middle of the night. I said: "What do you want?" He said: "I want to make a bequest to you." I said: "May God forgive you, but you are healthy." I was alarmed by his words. He said: "You must accept what I say to you." I said: "Yes, so tell me what has brought you to this at this hour." He said: "I saw in my sleep two angels, and they said: 'We have been commanded to take your soul.' I said to them: 'If only you would delay me until I complete my rites.' They said: 'God, mighty and majestic, has already accepted your rites from you.' Then one of them said to the other: 'Open your fingers.' He opened the index finger and the middle finger, and from between them came out two garments whose greenness filled what is between heaven and earth. They said: 'This is your shroud from Paradise.' Then he folded it and placed it between his fingers. We had not reached the stopping place before he was taken. Then a woman met us and was asking the caravans: 'Is al-Faḍl b. ʿAṭiyyah among you?' When she reached us, I said: 'What is your need for al-Faḍl? This is al-Faḍl, my companion.' She said: 'I saw in my sleep that a dead man named al-Faḍl b. ʿAṭiyyah, one of the people of Paradise, will reach us today, and I wanted to attend the prayer over him.'" Muḥammad b. ʿImrān b. Ibrāhīm b. Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Taymī al-Madanī, Abū Sulaymān: [He was judge in Madinah for the Umayyads, then al-Manṣūr appointed him to that. He was awe-inspiring and narrated little, and] he died in Madinah in this year while he was judge. His death reached al-Manṣūr, and he said: "Today Quraysh has become equal." From Numayr al-Madanī, he said: The Commander of the Faithful al-Manṣūr came to us in Madinah, and Muḥammad b. ʿImrān al-Ṭalḥī was his judge, and I was his scribe. The porters complained against the Commander of the Faithful about something they mentioned. He ordered me to write to him a letter requiring his presence with them and giving them justice. I said: "Excuse me from this, for he knows my handwriting." He said: "Write." So I wrote, then he sealed it and said: "By God, no one but you will carry it." So I carried it to al-Rabīʿ and began to excuse myself to him. He said: "Do not do so." He entered with the letter, then al-Rabīʿ came out and said to the people, while the notables of Madinah and the nobles and others were present: "The Commander of the Faithful conveys peace to you and says to you: I have been summoned to the court of judgment, so let no one I know stand for me when I come out or greet me first." He said: Then al-Musayyab went before him, and al-Rabīʿ and I behind him, wearing a waist-wrapper and a cloak. He greeted the people, and no one stood for him. Then he proceeded until he began with the tomb and greeted the Messenger ﷺ. Then he turned to al-Rabīʿ and said: "O Rabīʿ, woe to you. I fear that if Muḥammad b. ʿImrān sees me, awe will enter his heart and he will move from his seat. By God, if he does, he will never be appointed by me again." He said: When he saw him—and he was reclining—he let his cloak fall on his shoulders, then gathered it around him, and called for the litigants and the porters. Then he called the Commander of the Faithful. Then they made their claims, and he ruled against him in their favor. When he entered the house, he said to al-Rabīʿ: "Go, and when he rises and the litigants leave him, call him." He said: "O Commander of the Faithful, he did not call you until he finished with all the people's affairs." So he called him. When he entered upon him, he greeted, and he said: "May God reward you on behalf of your religion, your sons, your lineage, and your caliph with the best reward." He said: "I have ordered ten thousand dinars for you, so take them." Thus the bulk of the wealth of Muḥammad b. ʿImrān al-Ṭalḥī came from that gift. Ibn ʿAmmār Abū ʿAmr b. al-ʿAlāʾ al-Qārī: It was said: his name was Zabbān, and it was said: Sufyān, but the correct view is that his name is his kunyah. His father was over the ṭirāz of al-Ḥajjāj. His grandfather ʿAmmār carried the banner of ʿAlī [b. Abī Ṭālib] ﷺ on the day of Ṣiffīn. Abū ʿAmr b. al-ʿAlāʾ was born in the year seventy during the days of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān. He grew up in al-Baṣrah and recited to Mujāhid, Saʿīd b. Jubayr, al-Ḥasan, Shaybah b. Naṣṣāḥ, Yaḥyā b. Yaʿmur, and Ibn Kathīr. He was preeminent in his time, a scholar of qirāʾah, knowledgeable in its modes, the most learned of people in the affairs of the Arabs, with truthful and sound transmission. He had written down from the eloquent Arabs enough to fill a room almost to the ceiling. Then he devoted himself to piety and burned all of it. When he later returned to his knowledge, he had only what he had memorized. Most of his reports were from Bedouins who had lived into the pre-Islamic era. He died in al-Kūfah in this year at the age of eighty-four. In it also died Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Shuʿaythī al-Naḍrī (with the letter nūn). In it also died ʿUthmān b. ʿAṭāʾ, Jaʿfar b. Burqān al-Jazarī, Ashʿab the greedy, ʿUmar b. Isḥāq b. Yasār the brother of Muḥammad b. Isḥāq. And Qurrah b. Khālid Abū Khālid al-Sadūsī al-Baṣrī, and Hishām al-Dastawāʾī, who is Hishām b. Abī ʿAbd Allāh al-Baṣrī. (Al-Shuʿaythī with a ḍammah on the dotted shīn, and at the end a three-dotted thāʾ.)
