Then the year 154 AH began
وَفِيهَا: عَزَمَ الْمَنْصُورُ عَلَى بِنَاءِ مَدِينَةِ الرَّافِقَةِ، فَلَمَّا أَرَادَ بِنَاءَهَا امْتَنَعَ أَهْلُ الرَّقَّةِ وَأَرَادُوا مُحَارَبَتَهُ، وَقَالُوا: يُعَطِّلُ عَلَيْنَا أَسْوَاقَنَا وَيُذْهِبُ مَعَايِشَنَا وَيُضَيِّقُ مَنَازِلَنَا. فَهَمَّ بِمُحَارَبَتِهِمْ. وَالرَّافِقَةُ عَلَى شَطِّ الْفُرَاتِ، كَانَتِ الرَّقَّةُ إِلَى جَانِبِهَا، فَخَرِبَتِ الرَّقَّةُ. وَالرَّافِقَةُ تُعْرَفُ الْيَوْمَ بِالرَّقَّةِ.
Translation
✧ In it: al-Manṣūr resolved to build the city of al-Rāfiqah. When he wanted to build it, the people of al-Raqqah refused and wanted to fight him, saying: "He will disrupt our markets, take away our livelihoods, and constrict our dwellings." So he considered fighting them. Al-Rāfiqah is on the bank of the Euphrates; al-Raqqah was beside it, and al-Raqqah fell into ruin. Al-Rāfiqah is known today as al-Raqqah.
