Nashīṭ b. Yūsuf, whose kunyah is Abū Bakr: He was a jurist and a devoted worshipper. He saw ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith and heard from him. He took part in the expedition against Constantinople during the caliphate of al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik in the year ninety-eight, together with Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik. Al-Layth b. Saʿd, Ibn al-Mubārak, Rishdīn b. Saʿd, and Ibn Wahb narrated from him. He died in this year. Ḥaywah b. Shurayḥ b. Ṣafwān b. Mālik, Abū Zurʿah al-Tujībī: He narrated from ʿUqbah b. Muslim, and he was a jurist and a devoted worshipper whose supplication was answered. Al-Layth, Ibn al-Mubārak, Ibn Lahīʿah, and Ibn Wahb narrated from him. Ibn al-Mubārak said: No one was described to me but that when I saw him he fell short of the description, except Ḥaywah b. Shurayḥ, for seeing him was greater than his description. Khālid b. al-Firz said: Ḥaywah b. Shurayḥ was a constant supplicator, one of the weepers, and he was in very straitened circumstances. One day I sat with him while he was alone, absorbed in supplication. I said: May God have mercy on you; would you not supplicate God to expand your livelihood? He said: Then he looked right and left and saw no one, so he took a pebble from the ground and said: O God, make it gold. He said: And, by God, there it was, an ingot of gold in his palm; I have never seen anything more beautiful than it. He said: Then he tossed it to me and said: There is no good in this world except the Hereafter. Then he turned to me and said: He knows best what is right for His servants. I said: What shall I do with it? He said: Spend it. And, by God, I was awed by what he wanted. Muḥammad b. Bashshār al-Yashkurī said: When Abū ʿAwn came to Egypt and killed those he killed and took control of the country, he sent to Ḥaywah b. Shurayḥ: Come to me. He said: So he came and entered upon him, and he said: We are a company of kings; we are not to be disobeyed. Whoever disobeys us we kill. I have appointed you qāḍī. [He said:] Or shall I instruct my family? He said: Go. He said: So he went to his family, washed his head and beard, applied some perfume, put on the cleanest clothes he could find, then came and entered upon him and said: Who has made sorcerers more worthy of what they say than us? Judge what you are to judge; I will not take charge of anything for you. He said: So he gave him permission, and he returned. Ḥaywah b. Shurayḥ died in this year. Al-Ḥasan b. ʿUmārah b. al-Muḍarrib, Abū Muḥammad al-Kūfī, client of Bajīlah: He related from al-Zuhrī, Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī, Abū Zuhayr al-Makkī, ʿAmr b. Dīnār, and others. Abū Yūsuf al-Qāḍī and Shabābah narrated from him. He served as qāḍī in Baghdad during the caliphate of al-Manṣūr. Then al-Manṣūr sent for ʿUbayd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Ṣafwān in Makkah, someone to bring him. When he arrived, he appointed him qāḍī and attached al-Ḥasan b. ʿUmārah to al-Mahdī. Jabalah b. Sulaymān said: A man came to al-Ḥasan b. ʿUmārah and said: Misʿar b. Kidām owes me seven hundred dirhams for the price of flour and other things, and he has delayed payment, saying: I have nothing today. So al-Ḥasan b. ʿUmārah paid it to him and said: Give Misʿar whenever he wants, and when something accumulates for you against him, come to me and I will pay you. They have impugned al-Ḥasan b. ʿUmārah, and Shuʿbah testified that he was a liar. Ibn al-Madīnī said: His affair is clearer than that. It was said to him: He used to make mistakes. He said: And what was it he used to make mistakes in? He held that he used to fabricate ḥadīth. Yaḥyā said: His ḥadīth is not to be written. Aḥmad and Muslim b. al-Ḥajjāj said: He is matrūk al-ḥadīth (abandoned in ḥadīth). Al-Fallās said: He is a truthful, righteous man, prone to much error, abandoned in ḥadīth. Al-Sājī said: The people of ḥadīth are agreed on abandoning his ḥadīth. Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah said: When I heard al-Ḥasan b. ʿUmārah narrating from al-Zuhrī and ʿAmr b. Dīnār, I put my finger in my ear. Al-Ḥasan b. ʿUmārah died in this year. Shaqīq b. Ibrāhīm, Abū ʿAlī al-Balkhī: He possessed great wealth, gave it up, became ascetic, and accompanied Ibrāhīm b. Adham. ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Shaqīq said: My grandfather had three hundred villages, yet he had no shroud in which to be shrouded. He put all that before him, and his clothes and his sword are hung up to this day for people to seek blessing from them. He had entered the lands of the Turks for trade while still a youth, and he entered their idol temple and said to their keeper: This which you are upon is false, and this creation has a Creator unlike anything, the Provider of everything. The keeper said to him: Your words do not match your deeds. He said: How so? He said: You claim that you have a powerful Creator, yet you have taken the trouble to come here seeking provision. Shaqīq said: That Turk's speech was the cause of my asceticism. So he returned, gave away all his wealth in charity, and sought knowledge. Ḥātim al-Aṣamm said: We were with Shaqīq al-Balkhī, facing the Turks in battle on a day when I saw nothing but heads being struck off and swords cutting. Shaqīq said to me while we were between the two lines: Ḥātim, how do you find yourself on this day? Do you see it as the night when your wife was led to you? I said: No, by God. He said: But I, by God, find myself on this day as on the night when my wife was led to me. He said: Then he slept between the two lines with his shield under his head until I heard him snoring. ʿUmayrah b. Abī Nājiyah, Abū Yaḥyā: He was a devoted worshipper, an ascetic, constantly weeping, and his father was a Byzantine. [And ʿUmayrah died in this year]. Maʿmar b. Rāshid, Abū ʿUrwah al-Baṣrī: He settled in Yemen and said: I sought knowledge the day al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī died, and I heard from Qatādah when I was fourteen years old. There is nothing I heard in those years but it is as if written in my chest. He heard from al-Zuhrī and others. Al-Thawrī, Ibn ʿUyaynah, and Ibn al-Mubārak narrated from him. He died in this year at the age of fifty-eight. Mūsā b. Sulaymān b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās: He was one of the notables of Banū Hāshim and their most virtuous, and he was the brother of Muḥammad and Jaʿfar. Abī ʿAbd Allāh, whose name was Sanbar, al-Dastuwāʾī, client of Banū Sadūs: He was intense in fear [of God], given to much weeping. Saʿīd b. ʿĀmir said: Hishām b. Abī ʿAbd Allāh's eyesight had darkened from prolonged weeping. You would see him looking at you and not recognize you until you spoke to him. He died in this year, though it is also said in the year one hundred fifty-two. Wuhayb b. al-Ward b. Abī al-Ward, client of Banū Makhzūm, whose kunyah is Abū Umayyah, or it is said Abū ʿUthmān: His name was ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, and it was made diminutive, so he was called Wuhayb. He met ʿAṭāʾ and Manṣūr b. Zādhān. He was extremely scrupulous and much given to worship. When Sufyān al-Thawrī finished his ḥadīth session he would say: Let us go to the physician, meaning Wuhayb. Qādim al-Daylamī said: It was said to Wuhayb b. al-Ward: Will you not drink from Zamzam? He said: With which bucket? Al-Marwazī said: I heard ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Warrāq say: Shuʿayb b. Ḥarb said: They did not put up with anyone what they put up with Wuhayb; he used to drink with his own bucket. Ibn ʿĪsā said: I heard Ibn al-Mubārak say: I never sat with anyone whose company was more beneficial to me than Wuhayb's. He did not eat fruit, and when the year ended and fruit was gone he would uncover his belly and look at it and say: Wuhayb, I see no harm in you; I see that your abstaining from fruit has not harmed you at all. Bishr b. al-Ḥārith said: Wuhayb b. al-Ward's belly would groan from the greenness of vegetables because of his emaciation. Abū Bakr b. ʿUbayd said: Muḥammad b. Yazīd b. Khunays narrated to me, saying: Wuhayb b. al-Ward swore that neither God nor any of His creatures would see him laughing until he knew what God's messengers would bring. He said: They heard him say at death: You have been faithful to me and I have not been faithful to You. Wuhayb died in this year. In this year also died ʿUbayd, the son of the daughter of Ibn Abī Laylā, qāḍī of Kufa, and Sharīk b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Nakhaʿī was appointed qāḍī in his place. In it died Hishām b. al-Ghāz b. Rabīʿah al-Jurashī—though it is said in the year fifty-six, and it is said fifty-nine—and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd b. Jābir, Thawr b. Zayd, and ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Jaʿfar b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī.
