✧ Then the year 153 AH began. In it, al-Manṣūr became angry with his scribe Abū Ayyūb al-Mūriyānī and imprisoned him, and imprisoned his brother Khālid and the four sons of his brother: Saʿīd, Masʿūd, Mukhallad, and Muḥammad, and demanded from them large sums of money. The reason for that was what al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir mentioned in the biography of Abū Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr, namely that in his youth he had come to Mosul while he was poor, having nothing and with nothing. He hired himself out to some sailors until he earned something with which he married a woman. Then he began to promise her and give her hope that he was from a house to which kingship would soon come. It happened that she became pregnant by him. Then the Umayyads sought him, so he fled from her and left her pregnant. He placed with her a note containing his lineage: that he was ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās, and ordered her that when news of him reached her she should come to him, and if she gave birth to a boy she should name him Jaʿfar. She gave birth to a boy and named him Jaʿfar. The boy grew up and learned writing, and was enamored of Arabic and literature, and he mastered that with excellent mastery. Then the affair passed to the Abbasids. She asked about al-Saffāḥ, and behold he was not her husband. Then al-Manṣūr rose to power. The son traveled to Baghdad and associated with the scribes of the chancery. Abū Ayyūb al-Mūriyānī, the head of the chancery for al-Manṣūr, was impressed by him, and he gained favor with him and preferred him over others. It happened that he accompanied him in the presence of the caliph, and the caliph began to observe him. Then one day he sent a servant to bring him a scribe, and he entered with that youth. He wrote a document in the presence of the caliph, and the caliph began to look at him and examine him. Then he asked him his name, and he told him that he was Jaʿfar. He said: Son of whom? The youth fell silent. He said: What is wrong with you that you do not speak? He said: O Commander of the Faithful, my story is such-and-such. The caliph's face changed. Then he asked him about his mother, and he told him. He asked him about the conditions of the city of Mosul, and he began to tell him while the youth was astonished. Then the caliph rose to him, embraced him, and said: You are my son. Then he sent him with a precious necklace, abundant wealth, and a letter to his mother informing her of the true situation of the husband. The youth went out with that from the caliph's private gate and secured it. Then he came to Abū Ayyūb, who said: What delayed you with the caliph? He said: He had me write many letters. Then they exchanged words, and the youth parted from him angry and departed immediately. He hired transport to Mosul to inform his mother and carry her and her family to Baghdad to a place there that the caliph had commanded. He traveled for stages. Then Abū Ayyūb asked about him and was told: He has traveled. Abū Ayyūb thought that this man had divulged something of his secrets to the caliph and fled from him, so he sent a messenger in pursuit of him and said: Wherever you find him, bring him back to me. The messenger traveled in pursuit of him and found him at one of the stopping places. He strangled him and threw him into a well, and took what was with him, and returned with it to Abū Ayyūb. When Abū Ayyūb saw the letter, he was at a loss and regretted sending after him. The caliph waited for his son's return to him and deemed him slow, so he sent someone to investigate his news, and behold Abū Ayyūb's messenger had caught up with him and killed him. Then he summoned Abū Ayyūb and imposed on him enormous sums of money, and he remained under punishment until he confiscated all his wealth and stores, then he killed him and said: This one killed my beloved. And al-Manṣūr, whenever he remembered his son, grieved for him with intense grief.
