✧ Ibrāhīm b. Abī ʿAblah, whose name of Abū ʿAblah is Shimr b. Yaqṭān, Abū Ismāʿīl al-Qaysī then al-ʿUqaylī: He was from the people of Palestine. He heard from Ibn ʿUmar and others, and Ibn al-Mubārak and al-Layth b. Saʿd heard from him. He died in this year. From Ibrāhīm b. Abī ʿAblah, who said: Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik sent for me and said: O Ibrāhīm, we have known you as a youth and tested you as an adult, and we are pleased with your conduct and your state. I have decided to bring you close to myself and my inner circle, and to make you a partner in my work. I have appointed you over the land tax of Egypt. He said: As for that on which you have based your opinion, O Commander of the Faithful, may God reward you and recompense you, and sufficient is He as a rewarder and recompenser. As for that which concerns me, I have no ability to manage the land tax, and I have no strength for it. He became angry until his face quivered, then he said: He will take charge willingly or he will take charge unwillingly. I held back from speaking until I saw that his anger had subsided and his outburst had died down. Then I said: O Commander of the Faithful, may I speak? He said: Yes. I said: God, glorified be He, said in His Book: "Indeed, We offered the trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they refused to bear it and were afraid of it." (to the end of the verse). By God, O Commander of the Faithful, He did not become angry with them when they refused, nor did He compel them when they were averse. I am not worthy that you should become angry with me when I refuse, nor that you should compel me when I am averse. He laughed and said: O Ibrāhīm, you refuse anything but gentleness, so we have excused you and we are pleased with you. Khuwayl b. Muḥammad al-Azdī: From al-Haytham b. ʿUbayd, who said: I heard Khuwayl b. Muḥammad — and he was a devout worshipper — say: Khuwayl had been made to stand for the reckoning, and it was said: O Khuwayl, We gave you a life of sixty years; what did you do in them? He gathered the sleep of sixty years along with the midday nap, and behold a portion of my life had gone in sleep. I gathered the hours of my eating, and behold a portion of my life had gone in eating. Then I gathered the hours of my ablution, and behold a portion of my life had gone in it. Then I looked at my prayer, and behold it was a deficient prayer, and a fast full of breaches. There is nothing but the pardon of God or destruction. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Yasār b. Ḥibbān, and it is said: Ibn Yasār b. Kūthān al-Madīnī, client of Qays b. Makhramah b. al-Muṭṭalib b. ʿAbd Manāf: Muṣʿab b. ʿAbd Allāh said: Yasār was a client of ʿAbd Allāh b. Qays b. Makhramah, the grandfather of Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, from the captives of ʿAyn al-Tamr. He was the first captive to enter Madinah from Iraq. His kunyah is Abū Bakr, and it is said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh. He saw Anas b. Mālik and Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, and heard al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad b. Abī Bakr [al-Ṣiddīq], Abān b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān, Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn, Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Hurmuz al-Aʿraj, Nāfiʿ the client of Ibn ʿUmar, al-Zuhrī, and others. He was learned in the biographies, the military campaigns, the history of people, the beginnings, and the stories of the prophets. The great imams narrated from him, such as Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd [al-Anṣārī, Sufyān al-Thawrī, Ibn Jurayj, Shuʿbah, the two Ḥammāds, Ibrāhīm b. Saʿd, Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, and Sharīk] b. ʿAbd Allāh and others. Al-Zuhrī said: There will continue to be abundant knowledge in Madinah as long as Ibn Isḥāq is among them. Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn said: Muḥammad b. Isḥāq was trustworthy, but he weakened him in his transmission. When Ibn Isḥāq narrated a hadith from Fāṭimah bt. al-Mundhir, her husband Hishām b. ʿUrwah said: He lied. I consummated the marriage with her when she was nine years old, and no creature saw her until she went to God, mighty and glorious. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal used to say: Perhaps he entered upon her without her husband knowing. Mālik b. Anas also declared him a liar for that reason. Al-Qazzāz informed us, saying: al-Khaṭīb informed us, saying: More than one of the scholars refrained from using the transmissions of Ibn Isḥāq as evidence for reasons including that he was a Shīʿī, was accused of Qadarism, and committed tadlīs in his hadith. As for truthfulness, it is not denied of him. Abū Zurʿah said: Muḥammad b. Isḥāq is a man from whom the leading scholars of knowledge have agreed to take. The people of hadith tested him and found truthfulness and goodness, along with Ibn Shihāb's praise of him. I discussed with Duḥaym the statement of Mālik about him, and he was of the view that that was not about hadith, but rather because he accused him of Qadarism. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Numayr said: Ibn Isḥāq was accused of Qadarism but he was the furthest of people from it. When he narrated from those he heard among the well-known transmitters, his hadith is good and he is truthful. The flaw came only from his narrating false hadiths from unknown transmitters. Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah said: I have not seen anyone accuse Ibn Isḥāq. Ibn al-Madīnī said: His hadith is sound in my view. It was said to him: What about Mālik's statement about him? He said: Mālik did not sit with him and did not know him. It was said: And Hishām b. ʿUrwah? He said: What Hishām said is not a proof. Perhaps he entered upon his wife when he was a boy and heard from her. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said: Ibn Isḥāq craved hadith; he would take people's books and place them in his own books. Aḥmad used to write his hadith but did not use it as evidence in the sunan. Ibn al-Madīnī, Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, and al-Sājī said: He died in the year 152 AH. Al-Haytham b. ʿAdī, al-Fallās, and Ibn ʿArafah said: In the year 150 AH. Aḥmad b. Khālid al-Wahbī said: In the year 151 AH. Likewise al-Bukhārī said. Misʿar b. Kidām b. Ẓuhayr, Abū Salamah: He heard Abū Isḥāq al-Hamdānī. Al-Thawrī and Shuʿbah narrated from him. He was a learned, devout worshipper, given to much weeping. Sufyān al-Thawrī said: In his time there was no one like him. Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah said: I have not met anyone whom I would prefer over Misʿar. [Ibn Nāṣir informed us, saying:] al-Mubārak b. ʿAbd al-Jabbār informed us, saying: Shujāʿ b. Fāris informed us, saying: Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Fatḥ informed us, saying: Muḥammad b. Kunāsah said: I heard Misʿar say: Whoever is concerned with himself, that becomes apparent on him. He said: Jaʿfar b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: I came to Misʿar b. Kidām to hear from him, and he was like a man who had been made to stand on the brink of Hell to be thrown into it. He said: Aḥmad b. Dāwūd al-Ḥarrānī said: I heard Misʿar b. Kidām say: I saw the Prophet ﷺ in a dream while Sufyān al-Thawrī was holding his hand and they were circumambulating. He said: O Messenger of God, has Misʿar b. Kidām died? He said: Yes, and the inhabitants of heaven rejoiced at him. Misʿar died in al-Kūfah in this year. It is also said: In the year 155 AH. Yūnus b. Yūsuf, Abū ʿUmar b. Ḥamās, and it is said: Yūsuf: He was a devout worshipper, striving in worship, fasting perpetually and standing in prayer at night. His supplications were answered. He said: Mālik b. Anas said: Yūnus b. Yūsuf was one of the devout worshippers — or [he said]: one of the best of people. One day he was returning from the mosque, and a woman met him, and something of her entered his soul. He said: O God, You made my eyesight a blessing for me, and I fear that it may be a punishment upon me, so take it to Yourself. He said: And he became blind. He used to go to the mosque led by a nephew of his, and when the boy came to a pillar he would become distracted playing with the boys. If a need came to him, he threw pebbles at him and he came to him. One forenoon he was in the mosque when he felt something in his stomach, and he threw pebbles at the boy, but the boy was distracted with the boys until the old man feared for himself. He said: O God, You made my eyesight a blessing for me, and I feared that it might be a punishment, so I asked You and You took it to Yourself. Now I fear disgrace, so return it to me. He returned to his home walking with sound sight. Mālik said: I saw him blind and I saw him with sound sight. [The Deaths] In this year Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muslim b. ʿAbd Allāh b.
