✧ Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, Abū ʿAbd Allāh [Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq]. His mother was Umm Farwah bt. al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad b. Abī Bakr. He was a learned, ascetic, devout worshipper. He transmitted from his father, ʿAṭāʾ, and ʿIkrimah. From Yaḥyā b. al-Furāt, who said: Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad said to Sufyān al-Thawrī: Righteous deeds are not complete except with three things: hastening them, considering them small, and concealing them. He said: al-Haytham said: One of the companions of Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq narrated to me, saying: I entered upon Jaʿfar while Mūsā was before him and he was enjoining upon him this testament. Among what I memorized from it was that he said: O my son, accept my testament and preserve my words, for if you preserve them you will live happily and die praiseworthy. O my son, whoever is content with what has been allotted to him becomes self-sufficient, and whoever extends his eye to what is in another's hand dies poor, and whoever is not pleased with what Allah has allotted to him has accused Allah in His decree, and whoever belittles another's slip magnifies his own slip. O my son, whoever unveils another's covering, the private faults of his own house are exposed, and whoever draws the sword of transgression is killed by it, and whoever digs a well for his brother falls into it, and whoever associates with fools is despised, and whoever mingles with scholars is honored, and whoever enters places of ill repute is suspected. O my son, speak the truth for yourself and against yourself, and beware of slander, for it sows hatred in the hearts of men. O my son, when you seek generosity, then keep to its sources. He said: al-Thawrī said: I entered upon Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad al-Ṣādiq and said to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah, why do I see you have withdrawn from people? He said: O Sufyān, the age has become corrupt and the brethren have changed, so I saw isolation to be calmer for the heart. Then he began to say: Fidelity has gone as yesterday passed away, and people are between a deceiver and a dissembler They spread among them love and sincerity, while their hearts are filled with scorpions Sulaymān b. Mihrān, Abū Muḥammad al-Aʿmash, client of Banū Kāhil. His origin was from Ṭabaristān, from a village called Dabāwand. He was born on the day al-Ḥusayn was killed, on the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ in the year sixty-one, and he lived in al-Kūfah. He saw Anas b. Mālik but did not hear from him. He saw Abū Bakrah al-Thaqafī and took hold of his stirrup, and he said to him: O my son, you have only honored your Lord, mighty and majestic. He heard from al-Maghrūr b. Suwayd, Abū Wāʾil, Ibrāhīm al-Taymī, Sufyān al-Thawrī, and others. He was among the people most versed in the Qurʾān, most knowledgeable about the obligatory shares, most retentive of hadith, and most trustworthy of them. ʿĪsā b. Yūnus said: We have not seen, nor did the generation before us, anyone like al-Aʿmash. I have not seen the rich and the sultans more contemptible in anyone's sight than they were in al-Aʿmash's, despite his poverty and need. Abū Hishām said: I heard my uncle say: ʿĪsā b. Mūsā said to Ibn Abī Laylā: Gather the jurists. He said: So I gathered them, and al-Aʿmash came in a fur cloak with his waist tied with a cord. They were slow, so al-Aʿmash stood and said: If you intend to give us something, then do so; otherwise let us go. He said: O Ibn Abī Laylā, I told you to bring the jurists and you bring this one?! He said: This is our master, this is al-Aʿmash. From Wakīʿ, who said: Al-Aʿmash was close to seventy years old and never missed the first takbīr. I attended him for close to two years, but I never saw him make up a rakʿah. Jarīr said: We came to al-Aʿmash one day and found him sitting in one corner, so we sat in another corner. In the place was a channel of rainwater. A man wearing black came, and when he saw al-Aʿmash wearing a shabby fur, he said: Get up and carry me across this channel. He pulled him by the hand, made him stand, and mounted him, saying: Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, and we would not have been able to it (Q 43:13). Al-Aʿmash went with him until he reached the middle of the channel, then he threw him off and said: And say, my Lord, cause me to land at a blessed landing place, and You are the best of those who bring to land (Q 23:29). Then he came out and left the man in black floundering in the water. Muslim b. Ibrāhīm said: I heard Shuʿbah say: When al-Aʿmash saw a tedious person, he said to him: How long do you intend to stay in this town? Al-Rabīʿ b. Nāfiʿ said: We would sit with al-Aʿmash and he would say: There is a cloud in the sky, meaning here is someone we dislike. From Ismāʿīl b. Ziyād, who said: Al-Aʿmash's wife rebelled against him. A blind, eloquent man called Abū al-Bilād used to come to him to seek hadith from him. He said to him: O Abū al-Bilād, my wife has rebelled against me, neglected my house, and distressed me, so I would like you to enter upon her and tell her of my standing among the people and my position with them. So he entered upon her and said: O little one, Allah has made your portion good. This is our shaykh and our master, and from him we take the foundation of our religion, our lawful and our unlawful. Do not be deceived by the dimness of his eyes or the thinness of his legs. Al-Aʿmash became angry and said: O blind one, O wicked one, may Allah blind your heart! You have told her all my faults. Get out of my house. And he expelled him from his house. From al-Ḥasan b. Yaḥyā b. Ādam, who said: My mother narrated to me, saying: There was no woman in al-Kūfah more beautiful than al-Aʿmash's wife, and she was afflicted with al-Aʿmash's ugliness of face and ill temper. Al-Aʿmash died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year, at the age of eighty-eight. It is also said that he died in the year seven. ʿAmmār b. Saʿd al-Salhamī. ʿAṭāʾ b. Dīnār and Ḥaywah b. Shurayḥ narrated from him. He was virtuous. He used to say: Whoever envisions the reward finds the work light, and what is agreeable to the heart is light upon the body. The tongue of the wise man is in his heart, and the heart of the fool is at the tip of his tongue; whatever crosses his heart he utters. Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān, client of Fāṭimah bt. al-Walīd b. ʿUtbah, called Abū ʿAbd Allāh. He was trustworthy and a prolific transmitter of hadith. Ḥaywah b. Shurayḥ, al-Layth, and others narrated from him. He used to dye with yellow. He died in al-Madīnah in this year. Ṣafwān b. ʿĪsā said: Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān remained in his mother's womb for three years, so her belly was split open and he was brought out with his teeth already grown. From Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, who said: Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān went out with Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥusayn until he rose in al-Madīnah. When he was killed and Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān became governor of al-Madīnah, he sent for Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān. He was brought to him, and he rebuked him and spoke to him harshly, saying: You went out with the dogs. He ordered his hand to be cut off. Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān did not speak a word except that he moved his lips with something we did not know, perhaps he was praying. He said: Then the jurists and nobles of al-Madīnah who were present with Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān stood up and said: May Allah set the amir aright. Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān is the jurist of the people of al-Madīnah and its worshipper. He was only confused, thinking that he was the Mahdī mentioned in the narration. They continued to intercede for him until he released him. Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān turned and left without speaking a word until he reached his house. [Deaths] In this year died Zakariyyāʾ b.
