✧ In it died Ashʿath b. ʿAbd al-Malik al-Ḥuddānī al-Baṣrī; and Hishām b. Ḥassān, a client of ʿAtīk—although it is said he died in the year 148; and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Zubayd b. al-Ḥārith al-Yāmī, Abū al-Ashʿath al-Kūfī. In it also died ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUmar al-ʿUmarī, Hāshim b. Hāshim, and Hishām b. Ḥassān, the companion of al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī. An account of the prominent men who died in this year: 781 - Ḥusayn b. Dhakwān al-Muʿallim al-Baṣrī. He heard ʿAbd Allāh b. Buraydah and Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr. Heard from him: Shuʿbah, ʿAbd al-Wārith, and Ibn al-Mubārak. He was trustworthy. 782 - Suhayl b. Ḥayyān b. Manṣūr b. Saʿd, Abū al-Saḥmāʾ al-Kalbī. Narrated from him: al-Layth and Ibn Wahb. He was known for devotion and virtue. He died in Alexandria in this year. 783 - ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib al-Hāshimī, the paternal uncle of Abū Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr. His mother was an umm walad of Berber origin. Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Saffāḥ appointed him to fight Marwān b. Muḥammad, and guaranteed him that if Marwān were killed at his hands, he would make him caliph after him. So ʿAbd Allāh marched against Marwān until he killed him and took control of the lands of Syria. He remained governor there throughout the caliphate of al-Saffāḥ. Then al-Saffāḥ's intention toward him changed, and he designated al-Manṣūr as heir. When al-Manṣūr became caliph, ʿAbd Allāh opposed him and called for allegiance to himself, citing what al-Saffāḥ had promised him. Al-Manṣūr sent Abū Muslim, the supporter of the dynasty, against him. He fought him at Naṣībīn. ʿAbd Allāh was defeated and went into hiding, then went to al-Baṣrah to his brother Sulaymān b. ʿAlī and stayed with him until he obtained a guarantee of safety for him from al-Manṣūr. He came to al-Manṣūr, but before he reached him he imprisoned him. He remained in prison until the building in which he was imprisoned collapsed on him on a rainy night, killing him in this year. He was fifty-two years old. It is also said his age was forty-five. He was buried in the cemetery of Bāb al-Shām, and was the first to be buried there. The chroniclers have related that al-Manṣūr said to Ibn ʿAyyāsh al-Mantūf—who was on familiar terms with al-Manṣūr—by way of jest: "Do you know three men whose first names begin with ʿayn who killed three men whose first names begin with ʿayn?" He said: "Yes: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān killed ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib; ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān killed ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr; and the building collapsed on your uncle ʿAbd Allāh." He had written a covenant for ʿAbd Allāh and made it binding, with heavy oaths, in which he said: "I shall perform the pilgrimage barefoot and bareheaded, and my wealth and properties shall be held as endowment in the path of God; I shall say such and such, and I shall dissociate myself from such and such." When al-Manṣūr read this document, he said: "The moment my eye falls upon him, all of this becomes incumbent upon me." When he was brought, al-Manṣūr was informed of his arrival, and he said: "Put him in a house." He had prepared a house whose foundation was built with salt. When he settled inside, water was made to flow around it, and the house collapsed on him. Al-Ṣūlī said: It is related that he said to them: "Do you know an ʿayn son of ʿayn son of ʿayn son of ʿayn son of ʿayn who killed a mīm son of mīm son of mīm?" They said: "Yes: your uncle ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib killed Marwān b. Muḥammad b. Marwān." 784 - ʿUthmān, Abū ʿAmr al-Battī al-Thaqafī al-Baṣrī. It is said he is ʿUthmān b. Sulaymān b. Hurmuz, and it is said Ibn Sulaymān b. Jarmūz. He heard al-Ḥasan, and al-Thawrī narrated from him. He used to sell al-batt, which are well-known garments in al-Baṣrah. 785 - Hishām b. Ḥassān b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Firdawsī. He narrated from ʿAṭāʾ and others. Ḥammād b. Zayd said: A Persian woman who used to be with Hishām b. Ḥassān in the house told me: "What sin has this one committed that he weeps all night?" Hishām died in this year. It is also said in the year 148, and it is said in the year 146. 786 - Hānī b. al-Mundhir al-Kulāʿī. Ibn Lahīʿah narrated from him. He was an expert in genealogies, thoroughly versed in their knowledge, and in the reports of the Arabs and their battle-days, and the reports of Egypt and what took place in it. He was considered reliable in what he related. He died in this year.
