Translation
✧ Mention of the death of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī Al-Manṣūr had brought ʿĪsā b. Mūsā forward after he had abdicated, and he delivered to him his paternal uncle ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī and ordered him to kill him. He said to him: "The caliphate will come to you after al-Mahdī, so strike his neck. Beware of showing weakness and thereby undoing the matter I have arranged." Then he departed for Makkah and wrote to ʿĪsā from the road, asking him for information about what he had done regarding the matter he had commanded him. ʿĪsā wrote in reply: "I have carried out what you commanded." So he did not doubt that he had killed him. When ʿĪsā took ʿAbd Allāh from al-Manṣūr, he summoned his secretary Yūnus b. Farwah and told him the news. He said: "He wants you to kill him and then he will kill you, because he ordered his killing secretly and then he will claim it against you openly. So do not kill him and never hand him over to him secretly, and keep his affair hidden." ʿĪsā did that. When al-Manṣūr arrived, he set over his paternal uncles someone to incite them to intercede for their brother ʿAbd Allāh. They did so and interceded, and he accepted their intercession. He said to ʿĪsā: "I had handed over to you my paternal uncle, and your paternal uncle, ʿAbd Allāh, so that he would be in your house. Your paternal uncles have spoken to me about him, and I have pardoned him, so bring him to us." He said: "O Commander of the Faithful, did you not command me to kill him? So I killed him!" He said: "I did not command you!" He said: "Yes, you commanded me." He said: "I only commanded you to imprison him, and you have lied!" Then al-Manṣūr said to his paternal uncles: "This man has acknowledged to you the killing of your brother." They said: "Hand him over to us so that we may exact retaliation from him for him." So he handed him over to them, and they took him out to al-Raḥbah. The people gathered and the matter was made public. One of them stood up to kill him, and ʿĪsā said to him: "Are you going to do it?" He said: "Yes, by God!" He said: "Return me to the Commander of the Faithful." So they returned him to him. He said to him: "You only intended by killing him to kill me. This is your paternal uncle, alive and well." He said: "Bring him to us." So he brought him to him. He said: "Let him enter until I form my opinion." Then they left. Then he gave orders concerning him, and he was placed in a house whose foundation was salt, and water was made to flow into its foundation, so it collapsed upon him, and he died. He was buried in the cemeteries of Bāb al-Shām, and he was the first to be buried there. His age was fifty-two years. It is said: One day al-Manṣūr rode out with Ibn ʿAyyāsh al-Mantūf accompanying him. Al-Manṣūr said to him: "Do you know three caliphs whose names begin with the letter ʿayn who killed three Kharijites whose names begin with the letter ʿayn?" He said: "I know only what the common people say: that ʿAlī killed ʿUthmān—and they lied—, that ʿAbd al-Malik killed ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ashʿath, that ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr killed ʿAmr b. Saʿīd, and that a house collapsed upon ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī." Al-Manṣūr said: "If it collapsed upon him, what is my fault?" He said: "I did not say that you were at fault." His statement that Ibn al-Zubayr killed ʿAmr b. Saʿīd is not correct; rather, ʿAbd al-Malik killed him. (ʿAyyāsh is with a yāʾ with two dots beneath, and a dotted shīn.)
