Translation

✧ Mention of the uprising of the Blacks in Madinah In it the Blacks rose against its governor ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Rabīʿ al-Ḥārithī, and he fled from them. The reason for that was that al-Manṣūr appointed ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Rabīʿ over Madinah, and he arrived there when five nights remained of Shawwāl. His soldiers quarreled with the merchants over some of what they were buying from them. The merchants complained of that to Ibn al-Rabīʿ, but he rebuked them and reviled them. So the soldiers' greed for them increased, and they attacked a money-changer and contended with him over his purse. He sought help from the people and rescued his money from them. The people of Madinah complained of that from them, but Ibn al-Rabīʿ did not disapprove of it. Then a man from the soldiers came and bought meat from a butcher on a Friday and did not give him its price, and he drew his sword against him. The butcher struck him with a knife in his flank and killed him. The butchers gathered, and the Blacks called out against the soldiers while they were going to the Friday prayer, and they killed them with clubs. They blew a horn of theirs, and the Blacks from the highlands and the lowlands heard it and came and gathered. Their leaders were three individuals: Wathīq, Yaʿqil, and Zamʿah. They continued in that manner of killing the soldiers until evening. On the morrow they made for Ibn al-Rabīʿ, and he fled from them and came to Baṭn Nakhl, two nights' journey from Madinah, and alighted there. They plundered food belonging to al-Manṣūr, oil, and dried dates, and they sold a camel-load of flour for two dirhams and a waterskin of oil for four dirhams. Sulaymān b. Mulayḥ traveled that day to al-Manṣūr and informed him. Abū Bakr b. Abī Sabrah was in prison, having been taken with Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh, beaten, and imprisoned in fetters. When what happened with the Blacks happened, he came out in his irons from the prison and went to the mosque. He sent for Muḥammad b. ʿImrān, Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and others, and brought them before him. He said: I adjure you by God, and by this calamity that has occurred! By God, if it is established against us before the Commander of the Faithful after the first deed, it will be the ruin of the town and its people, and the slaves in the market altogether. So go to them and speak with them. They said: Welcome to our masters. By God, we did not rise except out of indignation at what was done to you. Our affair is in your hands. So they brought them to the mosque, and Ibn Abī Sabrah addressed them and urged them to obedience, and they desisted. The people did not pray Friday that day. When the time of the last evening prayer came, no one answered the muezzin to lead them in prayer. Then al-Aṣbagh b. Sufyān b. ʿĀṣim b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān arrived. When he stood for prayer and the rows were straight, he turned his face to them and called out in his loudest voice: I am so-and-so son of so-and-so, and I will lead the people in prayer in obedience to the Commander of the Faithful. He said that twice and three times. Then he advanced and led them in prayer. On the morrow Ibn Abī Sabrah said to them: You know what you did yesterday, and you plundered the food of the Commander of the Faithful. Let nothing of it remain with anyone but that he return it. So they returned it. Ibn al-Rabīʿ returned from Baṭn Nakhl and cut off the hand of Wathīq, Yaʿqil, and others.
