Translation

✧ Description of Muhammad and reports of his killing Muhammad was dark-skinned, very dark-skinned, and Mansur used to call him Muhammam. He was stout, brave, given to much fasting and prayer, and very strong. He would deliver the sermon from the pulpit, and phlegm would obstruct his throat, so he would clear his throat and it would pass; then it would return, so he would clear his throat and it would pass; then it would return, so he would clear his throat and look around, but he saw no place to spit, so he cast his spittle onto the ceiling of the mosque and stuck it there. Jaʿfar al-Sadiq was asked about the affair of Muhammad, and he said: "A fitnah in which Muhammad will be killed, and his full brother will be killed in Iraq, while his horse's hooves are in water." When Muhammad was killed, ʿIsa seized all the properties of Banu al-Hasan and the properties of Jaʿfar. Jaʿfar met al-Mansur and said to him: "Return to me my estate from Abu Ziyad." He said: "Do you speak to me of this? By God, I will surely destroy you!" He said: "Do not hasten against me; I have reached sixty-three years, the age at which my father, my grandfather, and ʿAli b. Abi Talib died. I have such-and-such obligations if I entangle you in anything, and if I remain after you, if I entangle the one who rises after you." Al-Mansur softened toward him, but did not return his estate; al-Mahdi later returned it to his son. Muhammad said to ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmir al-Aslami: "A cloud will overshadow us; if it rains upon us, we shall prevail, but if it passes over us to them, then look for my blood at the Ahjar al-Zayt." He said: "By God, a cloud indeed overshadowed us but did not rain on us, and it passed over us to ʿIsa and his companions, so they prevailed and killed Muhammad, and I saw his blood at the Ahjar al-Zayt." (His killing took place on Monday, fourteen nights having passed of Ramadan, in the year 145 AH.) He was given the titles al-Mahdi and al-Nafs al-Zakiyya. Among the elegies composed for him and his brother is the saying of ʿAbd Allah b. Musʿab b. Thabit: O my two companions, cease the blame and know that I am not more blameworthy than you in this. Stop at the Prophet's grave and greet it. There is no harm that you stop at it and greet it. A grave that contains the best of the people of his time, in lineage, excellence of character, and generosity. A man who banished the tyranny of our land through justice and pardoned grave matters and bestowed favors. He did not avoid the straight path, nor did he deviate from it, nor did he open his mouth with any obscenity. If the vicissitudes of time had magnified anything before him, then after the Prophet, you would have been the magnified one. Or if he had enjoyed safety before him, then any other would have ended in being safe. They sacrificed Ibrahim, the best sacrifice, a hero who plunges himself into its perils, so his days came to an end and passed away. Until the swords passed through him, and often he was not reckless, trembling, or surrendering. Banu Hasan's sanctuary has become permissible, and often their deaths were by the swords. And their women in their homes are mourners, and their plunder has become divided among us. They gain nearness through his killing and see it as an honor for them before the imam and as spoils. By God, if the Prophet Muhammad had witnessed his community directing their spearheads at his son, he would have prayed to God for the Prophet and greeted him, until he was certain that they had neglected that kinship and deemed the sacred unlawful. When Muhammad was killed, ʿIsa remained in Madinah for some days, then departed from it on the morning of the nineteenth of Ramadan, heading for Makkah to perform ʿumrah. He appointed Kathir b. Husayn as his deputy over Madinah, who remained there for a month; then al-Mansur appointed ʿAbd Allah b. al-Rabiʿ al-Harithi over it. May God's blessings and peace be upon our master Muhammad and his family and companions.
