✧ Account of the imprisonment of the sons of al-Ḥasan We have mentioned before that al-Manṣūr imprisoned them, and it has also been said that Riyāḥ was the one who imprisoned them. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar b. ʿAlī said: We were present at the gate of Riyāḥ in the maqṣūrah, and the doorkeeper said: “Whoever is here from the Banū al-Ḥusayn, let him enter.” They entered from the gate of the maqṣūrah and went out from the gate of Marwān. Then he said: “Whoever is here from the Banū al-Ḥasan, let him enter.” They entered from the gate of the maqṣūrah, and the ironmongers from the Banū Marwān entered, and he called for the shackles, shackled them, and imprisoned them. They were: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī; al-Ḥasan and Ibrāhīm, the two sons of al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan; Jaʿfar b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan; Sulaymān and ʿAbd Allāh, the two sons of Dāwūd b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan; Muḥammad, Ismāʿīl and Isḥāq, the sons of Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan; ʿAbbās b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī; and Mūsā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan. When he imprisoned them, ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī al-ʿĀbid was not among them. The next day after dawn, a man wrapped in a cloak came forward. Riyāḥ said to him: “Welcome, what is your need?” He said: “I have come to you so that you may imprison me with my people.” It was ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan, so he imprisoned him with them. Muḥammad had sent his son ʿAlī to Egypt to summon people to him. News of him reached the governor of Egypt, and it was said: “He intends to rise against you and rebel against you with those who support him.” He arrested him and sent him to al-Manṣūr. He confessed to him and named his father’s companions. Among those he named were ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī al-Mawālī and Abū Ḥubayr. Al-Manṣūr had them beaten and imprisoned, and he imprisoned ʿAlī. He remained imprisoned until he died. Al-Manṣūr wrote to Riyāḥ to imprison with them Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān, known as al-Dībāj. He was the brother of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan because their mother was Fāṭimah bt. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī. He took him with them. It has been said that al-Manṣūr imprisoned ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī alone and left the rest of the sons of al-Ḥasan. He remained imprisoned. Al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan remained, and his dyed hair faded from grief for his brother ʿAbd Allāh. Al-Manṣūr used to say: “What has the mourner done?” Al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan passed by Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥasan while he was feeding camels of his. He said: “You feed your camels while ʿAbd Allāh is imprisoned! Boy, untie their hobbles!” He untied them, then shouted after them, and not a single camel was found. When the imprisonment of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan grew long, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Saʿīd said to al-Manṣūr: “Do you hope for the emergence of Muḥammad and Ibrāhīm while the Banū al-Ḥasan are left free? By Allah, one of them is more awe-inspiring in the hearts of the people than a lion!” That was the reason for the imprisonment of the rest.
