Translation

✧ Sulaymān b. Ṭarkhān, Abū al-Muʿtamir al-Taymī. He settled among the Taym and was thus attributed to them, though he was not a Taymī. He was trustworthy, one of the devoted worshippers, performing the morning prayer with the ablution of the evening prayer. He and his son al-Muʿtamir used to roam at night among the mosques, praying in this mosque and in that mosque until morning. Ḥammād b. Salamah said: Sulaymān al-Taymī left no hour in which God could be obeyed without us finding him obedient. If it was the hour of prayer, we found him praying; and if it was not the hour of prayer, we found him either performing ablution for prayer, visiting a sick person, accompanying a funeral, or sitting in the mosque glorifying God. We used to think that he did not know how to disobey God, mighty and majestic. From Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā who said: I heard Muʿtamir b. Sulaymān say: Were it not that you are among my family, I would not relate to you this about my father. My father remained for forty years fasting one day and breaking fast the next, praying the morning prayer with the ablution of the evening prayer, and sometimes performing ablution anew without sleep. Abū Nuʿaym said, with his chain from Raqabah who said: I saw the Lord of Might in a dream, and He said: By My might, I will surely honor the resting place of Sulaymān—meaning al-Taymī. It has reached us from another route from Raqabah who said: I saw the Lord of Might in sleep, and He said to me: O Raqabah, by My might and majesty, I will surely honor the resting place of Sulaymān al-Taymī, for he prayed to Me for forty years the morning prayer on the trace of the evening prayer. He said: So I came to Sulaymān and related it to him, and he said: Did you see this? I said: Yes. He said: I will relate to you one hundred ḥadīths from the Messenger of God ﷺ for the good tidings you have brought me. He said: Then a short while later he died, and I saw him in a dream. I said: What has God done with you? He said: He forgave me, drew me near, and brought me close, and wrapped me [with His hand]. And He said: Thus do I with the sons of eighty-three. Sulaymān al-Taymī transmitted from Anas b. Mālik and from a group of the senior Successors. He died in al-Baṣrah in this year. Fāṭimah bt. Muḥammad b. al-Munkadir. Muḥammad b. Nāṣir informed us with a chain of his from Ibrāhīm b. Muslim al-Qurashī who said: Fāṭimah bt. Muḥammad b. al-Munkadir used to pass her day, and when night enveloped her she called out in a sorrowful voice: The night has stilled, the darkness has mingled, every beloved has withdrawn to his beloved, and my solitude with You, O Beloved, is that You free me from the Fire. In this year died ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAṭiyyah, the owner of al-Shāriʿah, which is a palm grove; and Ashʿath b. Sawwār; and Mujālid b. Saʿīd. Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd b. Qays b. ʿAmr b. Suhayl b. Thaʿlabah, Abū Saʿīd al-Anṣārī al-Madanī. He heard from Anas b. Mālik, al-Sāʾib b. Yazīd, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah, Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, al-Qāsim, and others. From him transmitted Hishām b. ʿUrwah, Mālik, Ibn Jurayj, Shuʿbah, and others. He was a trustworthy jurist who took charge of the judiciary in the City of the Messenger of God ﷺ during the days of al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik. Al-Manṣūr brought him to Iraq and appointed him judge in al-Hāshimiyyah, and that was before Baghdad was built. Sulaymān b. Bilāl said: Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd's condition had deteriorated, severe straitness befell him, and debt mounted upon him. While he was in that state, a letter came to him from Abū al-ʿAbbās appointing him judge. Sulaymān said: Yaḥyā entrusted me with his family and said to me: By God, I did not depart while ignorant of anything. When he arrived in Iraq, he wrote to me: I said to you when I departed that I had left while ignorant of nothing, but by God, the first two litigants who sat before me demanded something which, by God, I had never heard. When this letter of mine reaches you, ask Rabīʿah and write to me what he says, and let him not know that I wrote to you about that. From Wuhayb who said: I came to Madinah and saw no one but that he both knew and disapproved except Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd and Mālik b. Anas. Yaḥyā died in al-Hāshimiyyah of al-Anbār in this year. It is said: in year 144; and it is said: in year 146. In this year died Ḥajjāj al-Ṣawwāf, and Ḥumayd b. Tīrawayh al-Ṭawīl, and ʿAmr b. ʿUbayd according to one report—and we have mentioned him in the previous year—and Layth b. Abī Sulaym according to the sound view. Ḥamīd b. Mihrān, Abū ʿUbaydah al-Ṭawīl. A client of Khuzāʿah, born in the year 68. Ḥuyayy b. Shurayḥ, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Maʿāfirī, then al-Ḥubullī. From him transmitted Ibn Lahīʿah and others, and the last to transmit from him in Egypt was Ibn Wahb. He died in this year.
