✧ [The Beginning of Compiling Ḥadīth, Fiqh, and Tafsīr] Al-Dhahabī said: (In the year forty-three: the scholars of Islam in this era began compiling ḥadīth, fiqh, and tafsīr; so Ibn Jurayj composed in Makkah, and Mālik composed the Muwaṭṭaʾ in Madinah, and al-Awzāʿī in Syria, and Ibn Abī ʿArūbah and Ḥammād b. Salamah and others besides them in Baṣrah, and Maʿmar in Yemen, and Sufyān al-Thawrī in Kūfah, and Ibn Isḥāq composed the Maghāzī, and Abū Ḥanīfah composed fiqh and raʾy, then shortly thereafter Hushaym composed, and al-Layth, and Ibn Lahīʿah, then Ibn al-Mubārak and Abū Yūsuf and Ibn Wahb, and the compilation of knowledge and its classification became abundant, and the books of Arabic, language, history, and the days of people were compiled. Before this era, the imāms spoke from their memory, or transmitted knowledge from sound but unarranged sheets).
