Then the year 142 AH began

✧ In it died Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī, Abū Saʿīd, the qāḍī of al-Madīnah, and it was said in the year 143, and it was said in the year 144. In it died Mūsā b. ʿUqbah, the mawlā of the family of al-Zubayr. In it also died ʿĀṣim b. Sulaymān al-Aḥwal, and it was said in the year 143. In it died Ḥumayd b. Abī Ḥumayd Ṭurkhān, and it was said Mihrān, the mawlā of Ṭalḥah b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Khuzāʿī, and he is Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl. He narrated from Anas b. Mālik, and his age was seventy-five years. In it died Sulaymān b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās, the paternal uncle of the caliph and the governor of al-Baṣrah. That occurred on Saturday, seven nights remaining of Jumādā al-Ākhirah, and he was fifty-nine years old. His brother ʿAbd al-Ṣamad prayed over him. He narrated from his father, ʿIkrimah, and Abū Burdah b. Abī Mūsā. From him a group, among them: his sons Jaʿfar, Muḥammad, and Zaynab, and al-Aṣmaʿī. He had turned white-haired while he was twenty years old, and he dyed his beard because of the white hair at that age. He was generous, munificent, and praised. He used to manumit one hundred souls on the evening of ʿArafah every year, and his gifts to Banū Hāshim, the rest of Quraysh, and the Anṣār reached five thousand thousand. One day he looked out from his palace and saw women spinning in one of the houses of al-Baṣrah. It happened that one of them said: "Would that the amīr looked upon us; he would make us rich enough to dispense with spinning." He arose and went about in his palace, gathering from the jewelry of his women of gold, jewels, and other things what filled a kerchief. Then he lowered it to them and scattered it over them, and one of them died from the intensity of joy. He had been in charge of the ḥajj in the days of al-Saffāḥ, and he governed al-Baṣrah for al-Manṣūr. He was among the best of the Banū al-ʿAbbās, and he was the brother of Ismāʿīl, Dāwūd, Ṣāliḥ, ʿAbd al-Ṣamad, ʿAbd Allāh, ʿĪsā, and Muḥammad, and he was the paternal uncle of al-Saffāḥ and al-Manṣūr. Among those who died in it was Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, and ʿAmr b. ʿUbayd al-Qadarī, according to one statement. He is ʿAmr b. ʿUbayd b. Bāb — and it is said Ibn Kaysān — al-Tamīmī their mawlā, Abū ʿUthmān al-Baṣrī, from the descendants of the Persians, the shaykh of the Qadariyyah and the Muʿtazilah. He narrated ḥadīth from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, ʿUbayd Allāh b. Anas, Abū al-ʿĀliyah, and Abū Qilābah. From him: the two Ḥammāds, Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, al-Aʿmash — and he was among his contemporaries — ʿAbd al-Wārith b. Saʿīd, Hārūn b. Mūsā, Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, and Yazīd b. Zurayʿ. Imām Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said: He is not worthy that ḥadīth be narrated from him. ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī and Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn said: He is nothing. Ibn Maʿīn added: He was an evil man. He was among the Dahriyyah who say: "People are only like crops." Al-Fallās said: Matrūk, a person of innovation. Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān used to narrate to us from him, then he abandoned him, and Ibn Mahdī would not narrate from him. Abū Ḥātim said: Matrūk. Al-Nasāʾī said: Not trustworthy. Shuʿbah said, from Yūnus b. ʿUbayd: ʿAmr b. ʿUbayd used to lie in ḥadīth. Ḥammād b. Salamah said: Ḥumayd said to me: Do not take from him, for he used to lie against al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī. Likewise said Ayyūb, ʿAwf, and Ibn ʿAwn. Ayyūb said: I did not count him as having intellect. Maṭar al-Warrāq said: By Allāh, I do not believe him in anything. Ibn al-Mubārak said: They only abandoned his ḥadīth because he used to call to qadar. More than one of the imāms of al-jarḥ wa-l-taʿdīl weakened him, and others praised him for his worship, asceticism, and austerity. Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī said: This is the master of the youth of the villages as long as he does not introduce something new. They said: By Allāh, he introduced the gravest of introductions. Ibn Ḥibbān said: He was among the people of piety and worship until he introduced what he introduced, and he and a group with him withdrew from al-Ḥasan's gathering, so they were called the Muʿtazilah. He used to revile the Companions and lie in ḥadīth out of delusion, not deliberately. It has been narrated from him that he said: If "Perish the hands of Abū Lahab" is in the Preserved Tablet, then Allāh has no argument against the son of Ādam. And the ḥadīth of Ibn Masʿūd was narrated on his authority: "The truthful, the believed one narrated to us: 'The creation of one of you is gathered in his mother's womb for forty days'" until he said: "'Then he is commanded with four words: his provision, his term, his deed, and whether he is wretched or blessed'" to its end. He said: If I heard al-Aʿmash narrate it, I would declare him a liar. If I heard it from Zayd b. Wahb, I would not like it. If I heard it from Ibn Masʿūd, I would not accept it. If I heard it from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, I would reject it. If I heard Allāh say this, I would say: "It was not on this that You took the covenant from us." This is among the ugliest of disbelief. May Allāh curse him if he said this. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak, may Allāh have mercy on him, said: O seeker of knowledge, come to Ḥammād b. Zayd Take knowledge with forbearance Then bind it with a bond And abandon the innovation from the Traces of ʿAmr b. ʿUbayd Ibn ʿAdī said: He used to deceive people with his austerity, and he is blameworthy, very weak in ḥadīth, openly proclaiming innovations. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: Weak in ḥadīth. Al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī said: He sat with al-Ḥasan and became famous for his companionship with him, then Wāṣil b. ʿAṭāʾ removed him from the school of the people of the Sunnah, and he professed qadar and called to it, and he withdrew from al-Ḥasan's companions. He had dignity and displayed asceticism. It has been said that he and Wāṣil b. ʿAṭāʾ were born in the year 80. Al-Bukhārī reported that he died in the year 142 or 143, on the road to Makkah. He was favored by Abū Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr because he used to arrive with the qurrāʾ, and al-Manṣūr would give them and they would take, but ʿAmr would not accept anything from him. That pleased al-Manṣūr because al-Manṣūr was miserly, and he used to say: All of you walk slowly All of you seek game Except ʿAmr b. ʿUbayd If al-Manṣūr had looked closely, he would have known that every one of those qurrāʾ is better than the earth filled with the like of ʿAmr b. ʿUbayd. Asceticism does not indicate righteousness, for some monks may have asceticism that many Muslims in his time cannot endure. It has been narrated to us from Ismāʿīl b. Maslamah al-Qaʿnabī who said: I saw al-Ḥasan b. Abī Jaʿfar in a dream after he had died at ʿAbbādān, and he said to me: Ayyūb, Yūnus, and Ibn ʿAwn are in Paradise. I said: And ʿAmr b. ʿUbayd? He said: In the Fire. Then he saw him a second time, and it is narrated a third time, and he said to him the like of this. Ugly dreams have been seen about him. Our shaykh lengthened his biography in his "Tahdhīb", and we summarized its substance in the book "al-Takmīl". We have only indicated here some portions of his condition, so that he may be known and not be deceived by. And Allāh knows best. Mention of those of the great ones who died in this year. 749 — Ḥumayd b. Hāniʾ, Abū Hāniʾ al-Khawlānī. He narrated from Abū Qatīl, Shaqī b. Mātiʿ, and others. From him narrated al-Layth, Ibn Lahīʿah, and the last who narrated from him in Miṣr was Isḥāq b. al-Furāt. He died in this year. ʿĀṣim b. Sulaymān, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Aḥwal al-Baṣrī. He heard Anas, ʿAbd Allāh b. Sarkhas, and al-Ḥasan. He held the judiciary at al-Madāʾin during the caliphate of al-Manṣūr, and he used to oversee the measures and scales. He is counted among the trustworthy ḥuffāẓ. From Muḥammad b. ʿUbādah who said: My father narrated to me, saying: Sometimes ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal would be seen fasting and he would break his fast. Then when he prayed the ʿishāʾ, he would withdraw and pray, and he would not cease praying until dawn rose, not laying down his side. He died in this year.
