The story of Sulaymān b. Dāwūd (peace be upon them both)
Translation
✧ And His saying, may He be exalted: “And We certainly tried Sulaymān and placed on his throne a body; then he turned [to Allāh in repentance]” [Ṣād 38:34]. Ibn Jarīr, Ibn Abī Ḥātim, and other commentators mentioned here numerous reports from a group of the Salaf, most or all of them taken from Israelite traditions, and many of them contain severe rejection. We have drawn attention to that in our book “al-Tafsīr,” and we have confined ourselves here to mere recitation. The purport of what they mentioned is that Sulaymān ﷺ was absent from his throne for forty days, then returned to it. When he returned, he ordered the building of the Bayt al-Maqdis, and he built it as a sound building. We have previously stated that he renewed it and that the first to make it a mosque was Isrāʾīl ﷺ, as we mentioned that in connection with the saying of Abū Dharr: I said: “O Messenger of Allāh, which mosque was placed first?” He said: “The Sacred Mosque.” I said: “Then which?” He said: “The mosque of the Bayt al-Maqdis.” I said: “How long between them?” He said: “Forty years.” It is known that between Ibrāhīm, who built the Sacred Mosque, and Sulaymān b. Dāwūd (peace be upon them both), there is more than a thousand years, let alone forty years. His asking for the dominion that is not fitting for anyone after him came after he completed the building of the Sacred House. On the authority of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, who said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “When Sulaymān built the Bayt al-Maqdis, he asked his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, for three qualities, and He gave him two, and we hope that the third may be ours. He asked Him for a judgment that would coincide with His judgment, and He gave it to him. He asked Him for a dominion that is not fitting for anyone after him, and He gave it to him. He asked Him that any man who leaves his house intending only to pray in this mosque would come out of his sin like the day his mother gave birth to him, and we hope that Allāh has given us it.”
