Tarikh (al-Tabari) 2768

Then the year 142 AH began

Translation

✧ In this year, the Iṣbahbadh in Ṭabaristān broke the covenant between him and the Muslims and killed those of them who were in his land. When the news reached al-Manṣūr, he sent his mawlā Abū al-Khaṣīb, Khāzim b. Khuzaymah, and Rawḥ b. Ḥātim. They stayed at the fortress, besieging it while he was inside. When their stay grew long, Abū al-Khaṣīb devised a ruse. He said to his companions: 'Beat me and shave my head and beard.' They did that to him. He then joined the Iṣbahbadh and said to him: 'This was done to me because they suspected me of being inclined toward you.' He informed him that he was with him and that he could guide them to a weak point in their camp. The Iṣbahbadh accepted that and made him one of his close retinue, treating him kindly. The gate of their fortress was made of stone that was set in place by lifting, raised and lowered by men when opening and closing it. The Iṣbahbadh used to entrust it to trusted companions, deputies among them. When the Iṣbahbadh came to trust Abū al-Khaṣīb, he entrusted the gate to him, and he took charge of opening and closing it until he became familiar with it. Then Abū al-Khaṣīb wrote to Rawḥ and Khāzim, placed the letter on an arrow, and informed them that he had succeeded with the ruse. He appointed a night for them to open the gate. When that night came, he opened it for them, and they killed the fighting men in the fortress, took the offspring captive, and seized Shaklah, the mother of Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī. The Iṣbahbadh had poison with him, so he drank it and died. It has also been said that this took place in the year 143 AH.
