✧ [The Deaths] In it died ʿAbd Rabbih b. Saʿīd b. Qays al-Anṣārī, and it is said: in the year forty-one. In it died al-ʿAlāʾ b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the client of al-Ḥuraqah, and Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Abī Ṣaʿṣaʿah al-Māzinī, and Yazīd b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Usāmah b. al-Hād al-Laythī, and his death was in Alexandria. And in it died ʿAmr b. Muhājir. Jamīl b. Kurayb al-Maʿāfirī. From the people of Ifrīqiyyah. He narrated from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Jīlī, and he was among the people of knowledge and religion. The amīr ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥabīb al-Fihrī asked him to assume the judgeship, but he refused, feigned illness, and drank water of straw until his color turned yellow. So ʿAbd al-Raḥmān sent [to him] and said to him: "I only wanted you to be a support in the matter, and I would entrust you with the affair of the Muslims so that you judge over me and over those below me with what you see of the truth, so fear God regarding the people." Jamīl said to him: "By God, will you indeed do that?" He said: "By God, yes." So he accepted. Only days passed before a man came to him claiming a lawsuit against ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥabīb, and he went with him to the gate of the emirate. He said to the chamberlain: "Inform the amīr of my place, and that this man claims a lawsuit against him." He entered and informed him. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān was one of the wealthiest who governed Ifrīqiyyah, so he put on a cloak and sandals and came out to him. Jamīl seated him in the seat of the litigant with his adversary, then he looked between them, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān treated him justly. Jamīl used to ride a donkey whose halter was of palm fiber. One day he passed and two litigants presented themselves to him in a place, so he dismounted from his donkey and sat down. One of them wanted to hold the donkey's head, but he prevented him and held it himself, then he mounted. The Berbers had marched to al-Qayrawān, and the people went out to them, and with them was Ibn Kurayb. They fought, and Ibn Kurayb was killed in this year. Khālid b. Yazīd, client of ʿUmayr b. Wahb al-Juhanī, whose kunyah is Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥīm. He was a jurist and a mufti, and the last who narrated from him in Egypt was al-Mufaḍḍal b. Faḍālah. He died in this year. Dāwūd b. Abī Hind, Abū Bakr—and the name of Abū Hind is Dīnār—a client of the family of al-Aʿlam al-Qushayriyyīn. He was born in Sarkhas, and he narrated from Anas, Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, Abū al-ʿĀliyah, and al-Ḥasan. He used to give legal opinions in the time of al-Ḥasan. And from Sufyān, he said: I heard Dāwūd b. Abī Hind say: I was afflicted—meaning by the plague—and I fell unconscious. It was as if two beings came to me, and one of them pressed the base of my tongue, and the other pressed the sole of my foot. He said: "What do you find?" He said: "Glorification and magnification, and some walking to the mosques, and some recitation of the Qur'an." He said: I had not then taken up the Qur'an, so I was healed and I turned to the Qur'an and learned it. From ʿAmr b. ʿAlī, he said: I heard Ibn Abī ʿAdī say: Dāwūd fasted for forty years without his family knowing it. He was a silk merchant who carried his lunch with him from them, and he would give it in charity on the way and return in the evening and break his fast with them. Dāwūd died in this year. Yūnus b. ʿUbayd, Abū ʿAbd Allāh, a client of ʿAbd al-Qays. He narrated with chains from Anas, al-Ḥasan, Ibn Sīrīn, ʿAṭāʾ, and ʿIkrimah. He was a learned, trustworthy, and ascetic man. Ibn Nāṣir informed us, saying: with his chain from Zuhayr, he says: Yūnus b. ʿUbayd was a silk merchant. A man came seeking a garment, and he said to his servant: "Spread out the bundle." He struck his hand on the bundle and said: "May God bless Muḥammad." He said: "Lift it up." And he refused to sell it, fearing that he had praised it. Abū Nuʿaym said: with his chain: Umayyah b. Bisṭām narrated to us, saying: Yūnus b. ʿUbayd used to buy silk from al-Baṣrah and send it to his agent in al-Sūs. His agent wrote to him that the goods were in excess with them. And Abū Nuʿaym said: with his chain: Muʾammil b. Ismāʿīl narrated to us, saying: A man from the people of Syria came to the market of the silk merchants and said: "I want a bordered garment for four hundred." Yūnus b. ʿUbayd said: "We have one for two hundred [dirhams]." Then a caller called to prayer, and Yūnus went to Banū Bashīr to lead them in prayer. He came back and his nephew had sold the bordered garment to the Syrian for four hundred. Yūnus said: "What are these dirhams?" He said: "That bordered garment, we sold it to this man." Yūnus said: "O servant of God, this is the one I offered you for two hundred dirhams. If you wish, take it and take two hundred, and if you wish, leave it." He said: "Who are you?" He said: "A man from the Muslims." He said: "Rather I ask you by God, who are you? And what is your name?" He said: "Yūnus b. ʿUbayd." He said: "By God, we are in the midst of the enemy, and when the matter becomes severe upon us, we say: O God, Lord of Yūnus b. ʿUbayd, relieve us." Or something like this. Yūnus said: "Glory be to God, glory be to God." Yūnus died in this year. And it is said: in the year one hundred and thirty-four.
