Translation

✧ Al-Manṣūr addressed the people after the killing of Abū Muslim and said: O people, do not drive away the fringes of blessings with scant gratitude, lest retribution descend upon you, and do not conceal treachery toward the imams; for none of you conceals anything but it appears in the slips of his tongue, the pages of his face, and the emerging glances of his eyes. Indeed, we shall not be ignorant of your rights as long as you acknowledge our right, nor shall we forget kindness to you as long as you remember our favor. Whoever disputes with us over this shirt, we shall trample the crown of his head with the hidden part of this scabbard. Indeed, Abū Muslim pledged allegiance on the basis that whoever broke his allegiance to us and showed treachery toward us has made his blood lawful to us. He broke it, betrayed, acted immorally, and disbelieved, so we ruled against him for ourselves according to the ruling he applied to others on our behalf. Abū Muslim did well in the beginning and did evil in the end; he took from people through us more than he gave us, and the ugliness of his inward outweighed the beauty of his outward. We knew of the wickedness of his inner self and the corruption of his intention what, had the one who blames us known, he would have excused us for killing him and rebuked us for granting him respite. He continued to break his allegiance and violate his covenant until he made his punishment lawful to us and made his blood permissible. We ruled concerning him as he ruled concerning others, and the right that was due to him did not prevent us from carrying out the right against him. How excellent is what al-Nābighah al-Dhubyānī said to al-Nuʿmān—meaning Ibn al-Mundhir: For he who obeys you, benefit him through his obedience as he obeyed you, and guide him to right guidance; and he who disobeys you, punish him with a punishment that restrains the wrongdoer, and do not sit upon rancor.
