Abī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, whose name was Farrūkh, a client of the family of al-Munkadir al-Taymī, of Taym Quraysh, the one called Rabīʿah al-Raʾy, also known by the kunyā Abū ʿUthmān, and sometimes Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, a Medinan: He heard from Anas b. Mālik, al-Sāʾib b. Yazīd, and the general body of the Successors among the people of Madinah. From him related Mālik, Sufyān al-Thawrī, Shuʿbah, al-Layth b. Saʿd, and others. He was a learned, jurisprudent, trustworthy scholar, and al-Saffāḥ brought him to al-Anbār intending to appoint him as judge. Yūnus b. Yazīd said: I saw Abū Ḥanīfah in the presence of Rabīʿah, and Abū Ḥanīfah's utmost effort was to understand what he was saying. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. ʿAṭāʾ al-Khaffāf said: Some elders of the people of Madinah told me that Farrūkh, the father of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, went out among the expeditions to Khurasan in the days of the Umayyads as a fighter, while Rabīʿah was still a burden in his mother's womb, and he left with his wife, the mother of Rabīʿah, thirty thousand dinars. He arrived in Madinah after twenty-seven years, riding a horse, with a spear in his hand. He dismounted from his horse, then pushed the door with his spear. Rabīʿah came out and said to him: 'O enemy of God, do you burst in upon my dwelling?' Farrūkh said: 'No. O enemy of God, you have entered upon my wife.' They sprang at each other and each one grabbed the other by the collar until the neighbors gathered. Word reached Mālik b. Anas and the elders, and they came to help Rabīʿah. Rabīʿah kept saying: 'By God, I will not part with you except before the ruler,' and Farrūkh kept saying: 'By God, I will not part with you except before the ruler, and you are with my wife.' The clamor increased. When they caught sight of Mālik, all the people fell silent. He said: 'Old man, you have ample room in some other dwelling.' The old man said: 'This is my house, and I am Farrūkh, client of the Banū so-and-so.' His wife heard his words and came out, and said: 'This is my husband, and this is my son whom he left while I was pregnant with him.' They embraced each other and wept. Farrūkh entered the house and said: 'This is my son?' She said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then bring out the money which I left with you, and this that I have with me is four thousand dinars.' She said: 'The money I buried, and I will bring it out after some days.' Then Rabīʿah went out to the mosque and sat in his circle. Mālik b. Anas came to him, along with al-Ḥasan b. Zayd, Ibn Abī ʿAlī al-Lahabī, al-Musāḥiqī, and the nobles of the people of Madinah, and the people surrounded him. His wife said: 'Go out and pray in the mosque of the Messenger ﷺ.' He went out and saw a large circle, so he came to it and stood by it. They made a little room for him. Rabīʿah lowered his head and made him think that he had not seen him; he was wearing a long ṭarḥah. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān doubted about him and said: 'Who is this man?' They said to him: 'This is Rabīʿah b. Abī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.' Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: 'God has elevated my son.' Then he returned to his dwelling and said to his mother: 'I have seen your son in a state in which I have not seen anyone among the people of knowledge and jurisprudence.' His mother said: 'Which is dearer to you? Thirty thousand dinars, or this standing that he has?' He said: 'No, by God, only this.' She said: 'Then I spent all the money on him.' He said: 'By God, you did not waste it.' Bakr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Shurūd al-Ṣanʿānī said: We came to Mālik b. Anas, and he began to relate to us from Rabīʿah al-Raʾy, and we kept asking him for more of the tradition of Rabīʿah. One day he said to us: 'What do you want with Rabīʿah? He is asleep in that alcove.' So we came to Rabīʿah and roused him, and said to him: 'Are you Rabīʿah b. Abī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān?' He said: 'Yes.' We said: 'Rabīʿah b. Farrūkh?' He said: 'Indeed.' We said: 'Rabīʿah al-Raʾy?' He said: 'Yes.' We said: 'The one from whom Mālik b. Anas relates?' He said: 'Yes.' We said: 'How did Mālik gain you while you did not gain yourself?' He said: 'Do you not know that a mithqāl of government is better than a load of knowledge?' Mālik said: When Rabīʿah b. Abī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān came to the Commander of the Faithful Abū al-ʿAbbās, he ordered a gift for him, but he refused to accept it. Then he gave him five thousand dirhams with which to buy a slave girl, but he refused to accept it. Ibn Wahb said: Mālik related to me from Rabīʿah, who said: He said to me when he wanted to go out to Iraq: 'If you hear that I have related anything to them or given them a legal opinion, then do not count me as anything.' He said: And it was as he said: when he arrived there, he stayed in his house and did not go out to them or relate anything to them until he returned. Mālik b. Anas said: The sweetness of jurisprudence departed when Rabīʿah al-Raʾy died. Rabīʿah died in Madinah, and it is said in al-Anbār, in this year. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Jaʿfar, client of the Banū Kinānah: He was born in the year sixty, and he saw ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith b. Jazʾ. He was a learned, ascetic scholar. He related from Muḥammad b. Isḥāq and others among the people of Madinah. Sulaymān b. Dāwūd used to say: My two eyes have not seen a learned ascetic except ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Jaʿfar. From ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Jaʿfar, who said: We raided Constantinople, and our ship broke apart, and the waves cast us onto a rock in the sea. We were five or six. God caused to grow for us, according to our number, leaves, one leaf for each man among us. We would suck it and it would satisfy us and quench our thirst. When evening came, God caused another to grow in its place, until a ship passed by us and carried us. ʿUbayd Allāh died in Egypt in this year. It is said: in the year one hundred and thirty-two, and Abū ʿAwn ʿAbd al-Malik b. Yazīd, the governor of Egypt, prayed over him. ʿAbd al-Karīm b. al-Ḥārith b. Yazīd, Abū al-Ḥārith al-Ḥaḍramī: From him related Ḥaywah b. Shurayḥ, Ibn Lahīʿah, and others. He was among the devoted worshippers. If it were said that the Hour would come tomorrow, there would be no excess in him for more effort. It was said to him: 'How excellent is your patience in calamities!' He said: 'I accustom myself to them before they occur.' Mulaykah bt. al-Munkadir: She was a devoted worshipper, and she was spoken to about being gentle with herself, and she said: 'Leave me to hasten the folding of my scroll.' Mālik b. Dīnār said: While I was circumambulating the House, behold, there was a woman with a clear voice in the Ḥijr, saying: 'I have come to You from a far distant land, hoping for Your kindness. Grant me kindness from Your kindness with which You may help me against the kindness of anyone other than You, O You who are known for kindness.' I informed Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī, and we asked about her dwelling, and we sought her out, and we greeted her. Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī said to her: 'Say something good, may God have mercy on you.' She said: 'What should I say? I complain to God about my heart and my desire, for they have harmed me and distracted me from worship of my Lord, Mighty and Majestic. Arise, for I am hastening to fold my scroll.' Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī said: I had never spoken to myself about a woman before her. So I said to her: 'If you married a man who would help you in what you are upon.' She said: 'Even if it were Mālik b. Dīnār or Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī, I would not want him.' I said: 'I am Mālik b. Dīnār, and this is Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī.' She said: 'Uff! I thought that the remembrance of God, glorified and exalted be He, occupied you two from conversing with women.' And she turned to her prayer. We asked about her, and they said: 'This is Mulaykah bt. al-Munkadir.'
