Then the Year 136 AH Began

Translation

✧ Then the year 136 AH began. In it, Abū Muslim arrived from Khurāsān to al-Saffāḥ in Iraq, and that was after he sought the Caliph's permission to come. He wrote to him to come with five hundred soldiers, so he wrote back: 'I have made enemies of the people, and I fear the smallness of five hundred.' He wrote to him to come with a thousand. So he came with eight thousand, whom he dispersed, and he brought with him a great deal of wealth, gifts, and presents. When he arrived, he had with him only a thousand soldiers. The senior commanders met him at the outskirts of the city. When he entered upon al-Saffāḥ, he honored him, magnified him, respected him, and lodged him near himself. He used to attend the service every day. He asked the Caliph's permission to perform the Hajj, and he permitted him, saying: 'Were it not that I had already appointed Abū Jaʿfar to command the Hajj, I would have appointed you.' Between Abū Jaʿfar and Abū Muslim there was ruin, because of the coldness he perceived from him when he came to him at Naysābūr for the oath of allegiance to al-Saffāḥ and to al-Manṣūr after him. Abū Jaʿfar harbored a grudge against him and advised al-Saffāḥ to kill him. When he arrived, he again incited him to kill him. Al-Saffāḥ said to him: 'You know his trial with us and his service to us.' Abū Jaʿfar said to him: 'O Commander of the Faithful, that is only due to our dynasty. By God, if you sent a cat, they would listen to it and obey. And if you do not breakfast upon him, he will sup upon you.' He said to him: 'How is the way to that?' He said: 'When he enters upon you and you converse with him, I will come from behind him and strike him with the sword.' He said: 'And what of those with him?' He said: 'They are more abased and fewer.' So he permitted him to kill him. But when Abū Muslim entered upon al-Saffāḥ, he regretted what he had permitted his brother to do. So the servant was sent to him saying: 'That which is between you and him, he has regretted it; do not do it.' When the servant came to him, he found him sitting cross-legged with the sword, prepared for what he intended of killing Abū Muslim. When he forbade him from that, Abū Jaʿfar became extremely angry. In this year, Abū Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr led the people in the Hajj by the authority of his brother al-Saffāḥ, and Abū Muslim al-Khurāsānī traveled with him to the Hijāz by the Caliph's command and his permission for him to perform the Hajj in this year. When they returned from the Hajj and were at Dhāt ʿIrq, news came to Abū Jaʿfar – who was traveling a stage ahead of Abū Muslim – of the death of Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Saffāḥ. He wrote to Abū Muslim: 'A matter has occurred; hasten, hasten.' When Abū Muslim learned the news, he hastened his journey behind him and caught up with him at al-Kūfah, and there took place the oath of allegiance to al-Manṣūr.
