Translation
✧ Ismāʿīl b. Sālim, Abū Yaḥyā al-Asadī: He heard from ʿĀmir al-Shaʿbī, Saʿīd b. Jubayr, and others. Al-Thawrī and Hushaym narrated from him. He settled in Baghdad before it was built as a city. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal was asked about him and said: Thiqah thiqah (trustworthy, trustworthy). Yaḥyā said: He is more trustworthy than the pillars of the mosque. Muḥammad b. Saʿd said: Ismāʿīl b. Sālim al-Asadī, from whom Hushaym and his companions narrated, was thiqah thabt (trustworthy and reliable). His origin was from Kufa, then he moved and settled in Baghdad before it was built and inhabited. In Baghdad there were five hundred horsemen stationed for Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik and other caliphs, raiding the Khawārij when they rose in their area before their power weakened. Rābiʿah al-ʿAdawiyyah: ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĪsā said: I entered the house of Rābiʿah al-ʿAdawiyyah and saw light on her face. She wept much. A man recited before her a verse mentioning the Fire, and she cried out then fell down. I entered upon her while she was sitting on a worn piece of reed mat. A man spoke something before her, and I began to hear the falling of her tears on the reeds like dripping water. Then she trembled and cried out, so we got up and left. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: I entered upon Rābiʿah. She was a very old woman, eighty years old, like a worn waterskin, about to collapse. In her house I saw a bundle of reed mats, a Persian reed rack, its height from the ground about two cubits, on which her shrouds were placed. The curtain of the house was a coarse mat, and sometimes reed mats. There were grain, a jug, and a felt mat that was her bed and her prayer place. When she mentioned death she would shudder and a tremor would seize her. When she passed by people, they recognized in her the signs of worship. A man said to her: Supplicate for me. She clung to the wall and said: Who am I, may God have mercy on you? Obey your Lord and call upon Him, for He answers the supplication of the distressed. Ibn al-Jawzī said: Rābiʿah was an accomplished and astute woman. Among her sayings that indicate the strength of her understanding is her saying: I seek forgiveness from God for the lack of truthfulness in my saying 'I seek forgiveness from God.' Sufyān al-Thawrī used to say: Take us to the educator from whom I find no one to rest with when I part from her. One day he said before her: Wā ḥuznāh! (O my grief!) She said: Do not lie. Say: Wā qillata ḥuznāh! (O the littleness of my grief!) If you were truly grieved, life would not be pleasant for you. It was said to her: Have you done a deed that you think will be accepted from you? She said: If I have, then my fear is that it may be rejected. I have gathered her reports in a book; therefore I have confined myself to this amount here. She was buried outside Jerusalem on the top of a mountain, and her grave is visited. Zuhrah b. Maʿbad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Hishām, Abū ʿAqīl al-Tamīmī: A Medinan who settled in Egypt. He narrated from Ibn ʿUmar and Ibn al-Zubayr. Al-Layth, Ibn Lahīʿah, and the last to narrate from him was Rishdīn. He died in this year. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Sāʾib al-Makhzūmī al-Madanī: He used to say: My grandfather in the Jāhiliyyah was called Abū al-Sāʾib, and by that I am named. He was a partner of the Messenger of God ﷺ. When he mentioned him in Islam, he said: What a good partner he was. He neither engaged in secret transactions nor disputed. ʿAbd Allāh was a cultured, virtuous, good, and chaste man, but he was famous for his love of love poetry. He rejoiced at hearing poetry and was delighted by it. He came to al-Saffāḥ in al-Anbār. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Qazzāz informed us with a chain of transmission from Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Zubayrī, who said: Abū al-Sāʾib al-Makhzūmī was with al-Ḥasan b. Zayd in al-Anbār, and he honored him, during the governorship of Abū al-ʿAbbās. One night al-Ḥasan b. Zayd recited to him verses by Majnūn Banī ʿĀmir: And you two told me that Taymāʾ is a dwelling for Laylā, when the guest casts anchor. Abū al-Sāʾib began to memorize them. When he returned to his dwelling, some of them escaped him, so he went back to al-Ḥasan b. Zayd. When he stood at the door, he cried out at the top of his voice: O Abū Fulān! Al-Ḥasan heard that and said: Open the door for Abū al-Sāʾib, for some matter has called him. When he entered upon him, he said: Has news come? He said: Greater than that. He said: What is it? He said: Repeat to me: And you two told me that Taymāʾ is a dwelling for Laylā, when the guest casts anchor. So he repeated it to him until he memorized it. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Qazzāz informed us with his chain from Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Qāsim al-Taymī, who said: My father narrated to me, saying: While Abū al-Sāʾib was in his house, he heard a man singing these verses: I weep for those who made me taste their love, until when they woke me to passion, they slept. It suffices me that you know that my heart may love you, so if you find some of what I find. I found between me and love an acquaintance, so it will not cease until eternity ceases. I have no helper, so bestow one upon me, for I am afflicted, and grief has wasted me. He said: Abū al-Sāʾib went out after him and said: Stop, O beloved, for I have answered your call. [I am your helper.] Where do you want to go? He said: The tents of palm branches in the valley of al-ʿArj. A heavy rain fell upon them, and Abū al-Sāʾib began to recite: 'So they did not weaken for what befell them in the cause of God, nor did they become feeble, nor did they yield, and God loves the patient' (Q 3:146). He returned to his dwelling when his soul was about to perish. His companions entered upon him and said: O Abū al-Sāʾib, what are you doing to yourself? He said: Leave me, for I have walked in a noble deed, and I loved a Muslim, and the doer of good is assisted. Ibn al-Jawzī said: The reports about him in this regard are many. His son recited two verses to him while the household had gathered at the table, and he said to him: Your mother is divorced if we have dinner and do not have the predawn meal except with these two verses. So they removed the food and kept repeating the two verses. Then he woke them at dawn and they recited them to him. He passed by a blacksmith while he was reciting, and he swore that he would blow for him with his bellows. So he sat blowing while the other recited to him until sunset. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Madāʾinī narrated, saying: Abū ʿUthmān al-Māzinī narrated to us, saying: Abū al-Sāʾib al-Makhzūmī fasted one day. When he prayed Maghrib and his table was brought, a verse of Jarīr came to his heart: Indeed those who departed with your heart left in your eye a spring that ever flows. They absorbed some of their tears and said to me: What did you meet from passion, and what did we meet? He said: Every wife of his is divorced and every slave of his is free if he breaks his fast tonight except on these two verses. Al-Mubārak b. ʿAlī informed us with a chain from ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, who said: Abū al-Sāʾib said to me: O son of my brother, recite to me from al-Aḥwaṣ. I recited to him his saying: She said, and I said: Be chaste and connect the rope of a man passionately devoted to union with you. She cried out then: My husband! So I said to her: Excuse is something not of my nature. Two whom I do not prefer for union with them: the bride of a friend and the wife of a neighbor. As for the friend, I do not betray him, and the neighbor, my Lord has enjoined me concerning him. He said: This, O son of my brother, is a sincere lover. ʿAṭāʾ b. Abī Muslim al-Khurāsānī: Regarding his father's name there are two opinions: one is Maysarah, and the second is ʿAbd Allāh. Regarding ʿAṭāʾ's kunyah there are two opinions: one is Abū ʿUthmān, and the second is Abū Ayyūb. His origin was from Balkh. He had chains of narration from Ibn ʿUmar, Ibn ʿAbbās, Anas, Abū Hurayrah, and other virtuous scholars. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd b. Jābir said: We were close companions of ʿAṭāʾ al-Khurāsānī. He would keep the night alive in prayer. When a third or half of the night had passed, he would call us from his tent: O Ismāʿīl, O ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd, O so-and-so son of so-and-so, arise, perform ablution, and pray, for the prayer of this night and the fast of this day are easier than drinking pus and pieces of iron. Al-waḥā al-waḥā! (Hurry, hurry!) Muḥibb b. Ḥāzim, client of Thābit b. Yazīd b. Ruʿayn, called Abū Jabrah: He narrates from Mūsā b. Wardān a single hadith with its chain, and narrates nothing else. Saʿīd b. Ayyūb, Ḍimām b. Ismāʿīl, and al-Layth b. ʿĀṣim narrated from him. He was virtuous and died in this year. In this year Abū Khāzim al-Aʿraj died. It is said: in the year forty, and it is said: in the year forty-four. In this year Yaḥyā b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās died in Fārs, where he was governor, and before that he was governor of Mosul. In this year Thawr b. Zayd al-Diʾilī died, and he was trustworthy. Ziyād b. Abī Ziyād, client of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAyyāsh b. Abī Rabīʿah al-Makhzūmī, died, and he was one of the heroes. (ʿAyyāsh is with a yāʾ with two dots under it, and a shīn with a dot.)
