Translation

✧ Sufyān b. Muʿāwiyah sent to Salm ordering him to move from the governor's residence and informed him of the advice that had come to him from Abū Salamah. He refused and gathered with him Qays, Muḍar, and those of the Banū Umayyah who were in al-Baṣrah. Sufyān gathered all the Yemenis and their allies from Rabīʿah and others. A commander from among the commanders of Ibn Hubayrah came to them, whom he had sent as reinforcement to Salm, with two thousand men from Kalb. Salm went to the camel market and directed the cavalry into the streets of al-Baṣrah and proclaimed: "Whoever brings a head shall have five hundred, and whoever brings a captive shall have a thousand dirhams." Muʿāwiyah b. Sufyān b. Muʿāwiyah advanced with Rabīʿah and his close followers. The cavalry of Tamīm met him, and Muʿāwiyah was killed. His head was brought to Salm, and he gave his killer ten thousand. Sufyān was broken by the killing of his son and fled. After that, four thousand men from Marwān came to Salm. They wanted to plunder the remaining Azd, so he fought them a fierce battle. Many were killed among them, and the Azd were defeated. Their houses were plundered, their women taken captive, and they demolished the houses for three days. Salm remained in al-Baṣrah until news of the killing of Ibn Hubayrah came to him, so he departed from it. Those of the descendants of al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib who were in al-Baṣrah gathered around Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar and appointed him over their affairs. He governed them for a few days until Abū Mālik ʿAbd Allāh b. Usayd al-Khuzāʿī arrived in al-Baṣrah on behalf of Abū Muslim. When Abū al-ʿAbbās arrived, he appointed Sufyān b. Muʿāwiyah over it. The war between Sufyān and Salm in al-Baṣrah took place in Ṣafar. In this year, Marwān dismissed al-Walīd b. ʿUrwah from al-Madīnah and appointed his brother Yūsuf b. ʿUrwah in the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal.
