✧ Account of Qaḥṭabah's massacre of the people of Jurjān In this year, Qaḥṭabah b. Shabīb killed more than thirty thousand of the people of Jurjān. The reason was that after the killing of Nabātah b. Ḥanẓalah, it reached him that they intended to rise against him. When that reached him, he entered upon them and subjected them to a general review, killing among them the number we have mentioned. Naṣr, who was in Qūmis, marched until he encamped at Khawār al-Rayy. He wrote to Ibn Hubayrah, who was in Wāsiṭ, seeking reinforcements, accompanied by some of the notables of the people of Khurāsān. The matter was grave for him, and he said to him: "I have lied to the people of Khurāsān until none of them believes me. Send me ten thousand men before you send me a hundred thousand who will avail nothing." Ibn Hubayrah detained Naṣr's messengers. Naṣr then sent to Marwān: "I dispatched a group of the people of Khurāsān to Ibn Hubayrah to inform him of the situation of the people before us, and I asked him for reinforcements, but he detained my messengers and did not reinforce me with anyone. I am merely in the position of one who was expelled from his house to his chamber, then expelled from his chamber to his courtyard, then from his courtyard to the open space outside his house. If someone who can aid him reaches him, perhaps he may return to his house and it remains his; but if he is expelled to the road, then he has no house and no open space." Marwān wrote to Ibn Hubayrah ordering him to reinforce Naṣr, and wrote to Naṣr informing him of that. Ibn Hubayrah outfitted a large army and appointed over them Ibn Ghuṭayf, dispatching them to Naṣr.
