Translation
✧ Then the year one hundred and thirty entered. Account of Abū Muslim's entry into Marw and the pledge of allegiance there In this year, Abū Muslim entered the city of Marw in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, and it is said in Jumādā al-Ūlā. The reason for that was the agreement of Ibn al-Kirmānī with him. When Ibn al-Kirmānī and those with him and the rest of the tribes in Khurāsān made a pact with Naṣr against Abū Muslim, it weighed heavily upon him, and he gathered his companions to fight them. Sulaymān b. Kathīr was opposite Ibn al-Kirmānī, and Sulaymān said to him: "Abū Muslim says to you: 'Do you not feel shame at making peace with Naṣr when yesterday he killed your father and crucified him? I did not think you would join Naṣr in a mosque in which the two of you pray!'" This speech angered him, and he turned back from his view, and the peace of the Arabs was broken. When their peace was broken, Naṣr sent to Abū Muslim seeking that he enter with Muḍar, and the companions of Ibn al-Kirmānī—who were Rabīʿah and al-Yaman—sent to Abū Muslim the like of that. They corresponded with him about that for days. Abū Muslim ordered them that a delegation of the two parties should come to him so that he might choose one of them, and they did so. Abū Muslim ordered the Shīʿah to choose Rabīʿah and al-Yaman, for Satan is among Muḍar, and they are the companions of Marwān and his agents and the killers of Yaḥyā b. Zayd. The two delegations arrived. Abū Muslim sat and seated them, and he gathered around him seventy men of the Shīʿah and told them to choose one of the two parties. Sulaymān b. Kathīr of the Shīʿah stood up and spoke, for he was an eloquent orator, and he chose Ibn al-Kirmānī and his companions. Then Abū Manṣūr Ṭalḥah b. Zurayq the naqīb stood up and also chose them. Then Marthad b. Shaqīq al-Sulamī stood up and said: "Muḍar are the killers of the family of the Prophet ﷺ, the supporters of the Banū Umayyah, the Shīʿah of Marwān al-Jaʿdī and his agents. Our blood is on their necks and our wealth is in their hands. Naṣr b. Sayyār is the agent of Marwān, carrying out his affairs, praying for him on his pulpit, and calling him Commander of the Faithful. We declare before God—Mighty and Majestic—our disavowal that Naṣr is upon guidance. We have chosen ʿAlī b. al-Kirmānī and his companions." The seventy said: "The word is what Marthad b. Shaqīq said." The delegation of Naṣr departed upon them with gloom and humiliation, and the delegation of Ibn al-Kirmānī returned victorious. Abū Muslim returned from al-Yan to al-Mākhawān and ordered the Shīʿah to build dwellings, for God had enriched them from the uniting of the Arabs' word against them. Then ʿAlī b. al-Kirmānī sent to [Abū Muslim] that he should enter the city of Marw from his side, and that he and his kinsmen should enter from the other side. Abū Muslim sent to him: "I do not feel secure that your hand and Naṣr's hand might join together to fight me, but you enter and engage the battle with Naṣr's companions." Ibn al-Kirmānī entered and engaged the battle, and Abū Muslim sent Shibl b. Ṭahmān the naqīb with cavalry, and they entered it. Shibl alighted at the palace of Bukhārākhudāh and sent to Abū Muslim to enter to them. He marched from al-Mākhawān with Usayd b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Khuzāʿī at the head of his vanguard, Mālik b. al-Haytham al-Khuzāʿī on his right wing, and al-Qāsim b. Mujāshiʿ al-Tamīmī on his left wing. He entered Marw while the two parties were fighting each other. He ordered the two to desist, and he was reciting from the Book of God—Mighty and Majestic: 'And he entered the city at a time of heedlessness of its people and found therein two men fighting, this one from his party and that one from his enemy,' to the end of the verse. Abū Muslim proceeded to the palace of the emirate and sent to the two parties: "Desist, and let each party withdraw to its camp." They did so, and Marw became clear for Abū Muslim. He ordered the taking of the pledge of allegiance from the troops. The one who took it was Abū Manṣūr Ṭalḥah b. Ruzayq, one of the nuqabāʾ, knowledgeable in the proofs of the Hāshimiyyah and the faults of the Umawiyyah.
