Translation

✧ Ayyūb b. Abī Tamīmah al-Sakhtiyānī, whose kunyah is Abū Bakr, a client of ʿAnazah, and the name of Abū Tamīmah is Kaysān: He was trustworthy, reliable, and pious, concealing his spiritual state. The ascetics at that time used to tuck up their garments, but his lower garment had some length to it. He performed forty pilgrimages. Al-Ḥasan used to say: “The master of the youth of the people of Baṣrah is Ayyūb.” Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah had met eighty-six of the Successors, and he used to say: “I have not seen anyone like Ayyūb.” From Wahb b. Jābir, who said: Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī said: “When the righteous are mentioned, I am far removed from them.” Ḥammād b. Zayd said: Ayyūb would sometimes narrate a hadith and become moved, then he would turn aside, blow his nose, and say: “How severe this cold is!” Bishr b. al-Ḥārith said: Budayl entered upon Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī while he had spread a red fine cloth over his bed to ward off ostentation. Budayl said to him: “What is this?” Ayyūb replied: “This is better than the wool you are wearing.” ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Zayd said: I was with Ayyūb on Ḥirāʾ and I became extremely thirsty until he saw that in my face. He said: “What do I see with you?” I said: “Thirst, I fear for myself.” He said: “Will you conceal it for me?” I said: “Yes.” Then he made me swear, and I swore to him that I would not inform anyone about him as long as he lived. He said: Then he pressed with his foot on Ḥirāʾ, and water gushed forth until I drank my fill and carried some water with me. He said: I did not relate it until he died. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid said: I then came to Mūsā al-Aswārī and mentioned that to him. He said: “In this town there is no one more virtuous than al-Ḥasan and Ayyūb.” He died in this year at the age of sixty-three. Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAbbās: His mother was an umm walad. He is the one called the Imam. His father entrusted the cause to him, and his call spread throughout all of Khurasan. His partisans used to come to him and correspond with him from Khurasan. He sent Abū Muslim to Khurasan as governor over his partisans and propagandists. Abū Muslim devoted himself to fighting the governors of the Umayyads, and his power grew. He openly wore black, gained control over the lands, calling people to the Imam and acting according to the correspondence that reached him, without revealing his name to the people except to those among the propagandists and partisans, until his name became apparent and exposed. Then Marwān b. Muḥammad learned of the situation, seized Ibrāhīm and imprisoned him. He died in his prison in the land of Syria at the age of forty-eight. It is said that a house was demolished upon him. It is also said that he was given milk to drink and was found dead in the morning. ʿAbd Allāh b. Dhakwān, Abū al-Zinād, a client of Ramlah bt. Shaybah b. Rabīʿah: It is mentioned that his father was the brother of Abū Luʾluʾah, the killer of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ. Al-Shaʿbī said: Fāṭimah bt. ʿUthmān took care of me and Abū al-Zinād. He kept rising while I kept falling until we reached what you see. Abū al-Zinād died suddenly in the Hijaz while bathing, on the night of the thirteenth remaining from Ramaḍān, at the age of sixty-six. Farqad b. Yaʿqūb al-Sabakhī, whose kunyah is Abū Yaʿqūb: He narrated from Anas, but he was considered weak in hadith because he was an ascetic devoted to worship. Jaʿfar said: I heard al-Sabakhī say: “Take the world as a wet nurse, and take the Hereafter as a mother. Do you not see the child throwing himself upon the wet nurse, but when he grows and recognizes his mother, he leaves his wet nurse and throws himself upon his mother? The Hereafter is about to come to your aid.” Manṣūr b. Zādhān, a client of ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī ʿAqīl al-Thaqafī: He narrated from al-Ḥasan and Ibn Sīrīn, and he transmitted mursal hadith from al-Ḥasan. He was very devoted to worship and weeping. He would complete the Qurʾan twice every day and night, and he would weep and wipe his eyes with his turban. He would let it down fold by fold and wipe with it. When it became soaked, he would place it before him. It was said to him: “Will you not go out with us to the desert?” He said: “The riding camel would become too weak.” Hushaym said: Manṣūr b. Zādhān continued to pray the dawn prayer with the ablution of the night prayer for twenty years. He also said: If it were said to Manṣūr b. Zādhān that the Angel of Death were at the door, he would have no increase in deeds, because he would go out and pray the morning prayer in congregation, then sit and glorify Allah until the sun rose, then pray until noon, then pray the noon prayer, then pray the afternoon prayer, then sit and glorify Allah until sunset, then pray the sunset prayer, then pray the night prayer, then return to his house, and hadith would be written from him at that time. He died in this year, though it is also said in the year 128, or in the year 129. Naṣr b. Sayyār, governor of Khurasan: He held various governorships, ʿIkrimah narrated from him, and he transmitted hadith. He died on the night of the twelfth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal in this year at the age of eighty-five. Wāṣil b. ʿAṭāʾ, Abū Ḥudhayfah al-Ghazzālī, a client of the Banū Ḍabbah, though it is also said a client of the Banū Makhzūm, or a client of the Banū Hāshim: He was born in the year 80. He used to sit with the cotton merchants, so he was called al-Ghazzālī. He was one of the leaders of the Muʿtazilah. He could not pronounce the letter rāʾ and would avoid it in his speech. Manṣūr b. al-Muʿaddar al-Sulamī, Abū ʿAttāb al-Kūfī, died. In this year, Abū Muslim al-Khurasānī killed Jabalah b. Abī Rawād al-ʿAtakī, their client, the brother of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Dāwūd, whose kunyah was Abū Marwān.
