Translation

✧ When Abū Muslim encamped between the trench of al-Kirmānī and Naṣr, and Naṣr saw his strength, he wrote to Marwān b. Muḥammad informing him of Abū Muslim's situation, his uprising, and the multitude of those with him, for he was summoning to Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad, and he wrote with verses of poetry: I see between the ashes a flash of fire, and I fear it will have a blaze; for fire is kindled with two sticks, And war's beginning is speech. So I said in wonder: would that I knew, Are Umayyah awake or asleep? Marwān wrote back to him: The witness sees what the absent does not; so cut off the wart that is before you. Naṣr said: As for your companion, he has informed you that there is no help with him. So he wrote to Yazīd b. ʿUmar b. Hubayrah seeking reinforcements, and he wrote to him with verses of poetry: Convey to Yazīd, and the best speech is its most truthful, and I have become certain that there is no good in lying, That Khurāsān is a land in which I have seen eggs that, if they hatched, you would be told of a wonder: Chicks of two years, except that they have grown, though they have not yet flown, and they have been clothed with down. Will you not overtake with God's horses, marked ones, that have kindled fires of war with any blaze? Yazīd said: Do not ask much, for he has no man with me. Marwān's precaution against Ibrāhīm the Imām and his imprisonment: When Marwān read Naṣr's letter, the arrival of his letter coincided with the arrival of a messenger from Abū Muslim to Ibrāhīm, and he had returned from Ibrāhīm with Abū Muslim's reply, in which Ibrāhīm cursed him and reviled him for not seizing the opportunity against Naṣr and al-Kirmānī when they had given him the chance, and he commanded him not to leave in Khurāsān anyone who spoke Arabic except that he kill him. When he read the letter, he wrote to his governor in al-Balqāʾ to march to al-Ḥumaymah and to seize Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad, bind him firmly, and send him to him. He did that, and Marwān took him and imprisoned him.
