✧ Mention of the killing of al-Karmānī We have already mentioned the killing of al-Ḥārith b. Surayj and that al-Karmānī killed him. When he killed him, Marw became his alone, and Naṣr withdrew from it. Naṣr sent Sālim b. Aḥwaz to him with his garrison and horsemen. He found Yaḥyā b. Nuʿaym al-Shaybānī standing with a thousand men from Rabīʿah, Muḥammad b. al-Muthannā with seven hundred horsemen of al-Azd, Ibn al-Ḥasan b. al-Shaykh with a thousand of their youths, and al-Jarmī al-Saʿdī with a thousand of the sons of Yemen. Sālim said to Muḥammad b. al-Muthannā: "O Muḥammad, tell this sailor to come out to us," meaning al-Karmānī. Muḥammad said: "O son of a loose woman, do you say this of Abū ʿAlī?" They fought a fierce battle. Sālim b. Aḥwaz was routed, and more than a hundred of his companions were killed, and more than twenty of al-Karmānī's companions. When Naṣr's companions came to him defeated, ʿIṣmah b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Asadī said to him: "O Naṣr, you have brought ill luck to the Arabs! Since you have done what you did, roll up your sleeves." He sent ʿIṣmah with a force. He stood where Sālim had stood and called: "O Muḥammad b. al-Muthannā! You shall know that the fish does not eat the lukhm, and the lukhm is a creature of the water that resembles a beast of prey and eats fish." Muḥammad said to him: "O son of a loose woman, stand for us then." Muḥammad ordered al-Saʿdī, and he went out to him with the people of Yemen. They fought a fierce battle, and ʿIṣmah was routed until he came to Naṣr, and four hundred of his companions had been killed. Then Naṣr sent Mālik b. ʿAmr al-Tamīmī with his companions. He called: "O Ibn al-Muthannā, come out to me!" He came out to him. Mālik struck him on the cord of his shoulder but did nothing. Muḥammad struck him with a club and crushed his head. The battle intensified, and they fought a fierce fight. Naṣr's companions were routed, and seven hundred of them were killed, and three hundred of al-Karmānī's companions. The evil between them did not cease until they went out to the two trenches and fought a fierce battle. When Abū Muslim became certain that each of the two parties had weakened the other and that they had no reinforcements, he began writing to Shaybān, then saying to the messenger: "Take your route through Muḍar, for they will seize your letters." They would seize them and read in them: "I have seen that the people of Yemen have no fidelity and no good in them. Do not trust them or feel secure with them, for I hope that God will show you in the Yemenites what you love. If I remain, I will not leave them a hair or a nail." He would send another messenger with a letter containing mention of Muḍar with something similar, and order the messenger to take his route through the Yemenites, until the inclination of both parties was with him. Then he began writing to Naṣr b. Sayyār and to al-Karmānī: "The Imam has enjoined me concerning you, and I will not deviate from his opinion regarding you." He wrote to the districts to proclaim the cause. The first to don black was Usayd b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Khuzāʿī in Nasā, Muqātil b. Ḥakīm, and Ibn Ghazwān. They called: "O Muḥammad! O Manṣūr!" The people of Abīward, the people of Marw al-Rūdh, and the villages of Marw donned black. Abū Muslim advanced until he encamped between al-Karmānī's trench and Naṣr's trench. Both parties feared him. He sent to al-Karmānī: "I am with you." Al-Karmānī accepted that, and Abū Muslim joined him. That was hard on Naṣr b. Sayyār. He sent to al-Karmānī: "Woe to you, do not be deceived! By God, I fear for you and your companions from him. Enter Marw and we will write a document between us for peace." He wanted to separate him from Abū Muslim. Al-Karmānī entered his house, and Abū Muslim stayed in the camp. Al-Karmānī went out and stood in the open square with a hundred horsemen, wearing a qurṭaq. He sent to Naṣr: "Come out so we may write that document between us." Naṣr saw an opportunity in him. He sent Ibn al-Ḥārith b. Surayj to him with about three hundred horsemen in the square. They met there for a long time. Then al-Karmānī was thrust in his side, and he fell from his mount. His companions protected him until what they could not withstand came upon them. Naṣr b. Sayyār killed al-Karmānī, crucified him, and crucified a fish with him. His son ʿAlī came forward, having gathered a large force. He went to Abū Muslim and took him along with him. They fought Naṣr b. Sayyār until they expelled him from the palace of the emirate. He withdrew to one of the houses of Marw. Abū Muslim came forward and entered Marw. ʿAlī b. al-Karmānī came to him and informed him that he was with him, greeted him with the emirate, and said to him: "Command me with your command, for I will support you in what you want." He said: "Remain as you are until I command you with my command."
