Translation
✧ In this year died Suwayd b. Ghafalah, and it is said [he died] in the year eighty-one, and it is said in the year eighty-two, his age being one hundred and twenty years; and ʿAbd al-Karīm b. Mālik al-Jazarī, and it is said otherwise; and in this year died Abū Ḥuṣayn ʿUthmān b. Ḥuṣayn al-Asadī al-Kūfī (Ḥuṣayn: with a fatḥah on the ḥāʾ and a kasrah on the ṣād). And in this year died Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ al-Azdī al-Baṣrī, whose kunyah was Abū Bakr; and Dāwūd b. Abī Hind, whose father's name was Dīnār, a mawlā of Banū Qushayr, Abū Muḥammad. And in this year died Abū Baḥr ʿAbd Allāh b. [Abī] Isḥāq, a mawlā of al-Ḥaḍramī, and he was an imam in grammar and lexicography. He learned that from Yaḥyā b. al-Nuʿmān, and he used to criticize al-Farazdaq in his poetry and attribute him to solecism. So al-Farazdaq satirized him, saying: If ʿAbd Allāh were a mawlā I would satirize him, but ʿAbd Allāh is a mawlā mawāliyā. Abū ʿAbd Allāh said to him: You have also committed a solecism in your saying mawāliyā; you should say mawlā mawālin. Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, Abū Isḥāq: He narrated on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar, Anas, and others. And he held the qadis and judgeship of al-Madīnah. On the authority of Shaybah, who said: Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm used to fast perpetually and recite the Qurʾān every day and night. Saʿd died in al-Madīnah in this year, at the age of seventy-two. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Khālid b. Musāfir, Abū Khālid al-Fahmī: Governor of Egypt for Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik. Al-Layth b. Saʿd and Yaḥyā b. Ayyūb narrated from him. He was reliable in hadith. He died in this year. ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī b. Aḥmad al-Hamdānī, Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī: He was born when three years remained of the caliphate of ʿUthmān. Shurayḥ permitted his testimony alone in a bequest. He used to say: O company of youths, seize your youth and your strength, for seldom did a night pass in my youth in which I did not recite a thousand verses. Among the Companions he met were: ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr, Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān, ʿAdī b. Ḥātim, al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib, Zayd b. Arqam, Jābir b. Samurah, Ḥārithah b. Wahb, Ḥubaysh b. Junādah, Abū Juḥayfah, al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr, Sulaymān b. Ṣurad, ʿAbd Allāh b. Yazīd, Jarīr b. ʿAbd Allāh, Dhū al-Jawshan, ʿUmārah b. Ruwaybah, al-Ashʿath b. Qays, al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah, Usāmah b. Zayd, ʿAmr b. al-Ḥārith b. al-Muṣṭaliq, Rāfiʿ b. Khadīj, ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth, al-Miswar b. Makhramah, Salamah b. Qays al-Ashjaʿī, Surāqah b. Mālik, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abzā. Abū Isḥāq alone narrated from three Companions from whom no one other than he narrated: one of them was ʿAbdah b. Jurayy, and it is said ʿUbaydah; the second was Kudayd al-Ḍabbī; and the third was Maṭar b. ʿUkāmis. These three a group of scholars counted among the Companions, but a people refused that they had companionship [with the Prophet]. Abū Isḥāq died on the day al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays entered al-Kūfah in the year one hundred and twenty-seven, at the age of ninety-five. Abū Isḥāq changed toward the end, but what was heard of his hadith is sound.
