✧ Mention of the rebellion of the people of Palestine In this year Thābit b. Nuʿaym rose up after the people of Ḥimṣ and the Ghūṭa. His rising was among the people of Palestine, and he also revolted against Marwān. He came to Tiberias and besieged it. Al-Walīd b. Muʿāwiya b. Marwān b. al-Ḥakam, the nephew of ʿAbd al-Malik, was over it. Its people fought him for some days. Marwān b. Muḥammad wrote to Abū al-Ward, ordering him to march against them. So he marched against them. When he drew near them, the people of Tiberias came out against Thābit and routed him and plundered his camp. He withdrew to Palestine in defeat. Abū al-Ward pursued him. They met and fought, and Abū al-Ward routed him a second time, and his companions dispersed. He captured three of his sons and sent them to Marwān. Thābit and his son Rifāʿa went into hiding. Marwān appointed al-Rumāḥis b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Kinānī over Palestine. He captured Thābit and sent him to Marwān in bonds after two months. He ordered that he and his three sons have their hands and feet cut off, and they were carried to Damascus and thrown at the gate of the mosque. Then he crucified them at the gates of Damascus. Marwān was at Dayr Ayyūb. He received the oath of allegiance for his two sons ʿUbayd Allāh and ʿAbd Allāh and married them to the two daughters of Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik, and he likewise gathered the Umayyads. Syria became settled for him except for Tadmur. He marched to it and encamped at al-Qasṭal. Between him and Tadmur there were several days' journey. They had spoiled the water sources, so he employed water skins, waterskins, and camels. Al-Abrash b. al-Walīd, Sulaymān b. Hishām, and others spoke to him and asked him to send to them. He permitted them that. Al-Abrash went and made them fear and warned them. They answered with obedience. A group of them who did not trust Marwān fled to the desert. Al-Abrash returned to Marwān with those who had obeyed after he had demolished its wall. Marwān had sent Yazīd b. ʿUmar b. Hubayra ahead of him to Iraq to fight al-Ḍaḥḥāk the Khārijite. He levied an expedition on the people of Syria and ordered them to join Yazīd. Marwān marched to al-Ruṣāfa. Sulaymān b. Hishām asked his permission to stay for some days so that those with him could gain strength and his mount could rest. He permitted him. Marwān advanced to Qarqīsiyā, where Ibn Hubayra was, to send him forward against al-Ḍaḥḥāk. Then ten thousand of those he had taken from the people of Syria to fight al-Ḍaḥḥāk returned and stayed at al-Ruṣāfa and called on Sulaymān to renounce Marwān. He answered them.
