Translation

✧ In this year: al-Walīd b. Yazīd appointed Naṣr b. Sayyār over all of Khurāsān, and singled him out for it. Then Yūsuf b. ʿUmar came as a delegate to al-Walīd and purchased Naṣr and his officials from him, so he restored to him the governorship of Khurāsān. Yūsuf b. ʿUmar wrote to Naṣr b. Sayyār ordering him to come to him, and to carry what he could of gifts and wealth, and to come to him with all of his officials. When his letter reached Naṣr, he distributed gifts among the people of Khurāsān and his officials. He did not leave in Khurāsān any slave girl, slave, or fine workhorse except that he prepared it. He bought a thousand slaves, gave them weapons, mounted them on horses, prepared five hundred servant girls, and ordered the casting of ewers of gold and silver, figures of gazelles, heads of lions, stags, and other things. When he had finished all of that, al-Walīd wrote to him urging him on. He sent the gifts until their vanguard reached Bayhaq. Al-Walīd wrote to him ordering him to send him barbaṭs and ṭanābīrs and ewers of gold and silver, and to gather every female cymbal-player in Khurāsān [and every hawk and fine workhorse, then to travel with all of that himself and the notables of Khurāsān]. He continued to delay until the strife occurred. Naṣr withdrew to his palace with what he had gathered. A messenger had come to him and informed him that al-Walīd had been killed and strife had occurred in Syria. The astrologers had informed Naṣr of a strife that would occur. Yūsuf insisted that Naṣr come, and sent a messenger to him about that, ordering him to urge him on or to proclaim among the people that he had been deposed. Naṣr satisfied the messenger and rewarded him, and only a short while passed until the strife occurred. He withdrew to his palace at Mājān and appointed ʿIṣma b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Asadī as his deputy over Khurāsān, Mūsā b. Warqāʾ at al-Shāsh, Ḥassān from the people of al-Ṣaghāniyān at Samarqand, and Muqātil b. ʿAlī al-Sughdī at Āmul. He ordered them, when they learned of his departure from Marw, to summon the Turks to cross beyond the river so that he might return to them. Then he set out for Iraq. While he was traveling to Iraq, a client of the Banū Layth came to him at night and informed him of the killing of al-Walīd. When morning came, he gave permission to the people, brought the messengers of al-Walīd, and said to them: "You know what my journey was, and you saw my sending of the gifts. The gifts had been sent ahead and reached Bayhaq. So-and-so came to me at night and informed me that al-Walīd has been killed and strife has occurred in Syria. Manṣūr b. Jumhūr has arrived in Iraq, and Yūsuf b. ʿUmar has fled. We are in the lands whose condition and the number of our enemy you know." Sālim b. Aḥwaz said: "O emir, this is one of the schemes of Quraysh. They want to make your obedience seem ugly, so go on and do not test us." He said: "O Sālim, you are a man who has knowledge of war and good obedience to the Umayyads. But in matters like these, your opinion is the opinion of a toothless old woman." Then he returned with the people.
