Translation
✧ Mention of the governorship of Ḥanẓalah over Ifrīqiyah and Abū al-Khaṭṭār over al-Andalus In this year, Abū al-Khaṭṭār Ḥusām b. Ḍirār al-Kalbī came to al-Andalus as amīr in Rajab. Abū al-Khaṭṭār, when the governors of al-Andalus from Qays had pledged allegiance to one another, had recited poetry in which he alluded to the Day of Marj Rāhiṭ and what had befallen Kalb therein with Marwān b. al-Ḥakam, and the rising of the Qaysīs with al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays al-Fihrī against Marwān. Among the poetry was: Banū Marwān have granted Qays our blood, and in God, if they do not act justly, there is a just judge. It is as though you did not witness Marj Rāhiṭ, and did not know who there possessed the merit. And we shielded you from the heat of the spears with our chests, while you had no horses to be counted and no foot soldiers. When his poetry reached Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik, he asked about him and was informed that he was a man from Kalb. Hishām had appointed Ḥanẓalah b. Ṣafwān al-Kalbī over Ifrīqiyah in the year 124 AH, so Hishām wrote to him to appoint Abū al-Khaṭṭār over al-Andalus. He appointed him and dispatched him there. He entered Córdoba on a Friday and saw Thaʿlabah b. Salāmah, its governor, having brought out the thousand Berber captives whose capture was previously mentioned, to execute them. When Abū al-Khaṭṭār entered, the captives were handed over to him, and his governorship was the cause of their lives. The people of Syria who were in al-Andalus had wanted to leave with Thaʿlabah b. Salāmah for Syria, but Abū al-Khaṭṭār did not cease treating them well and winning them over until they stayed. He settled each group in a place resembling their dwellings in Syria, and when they saw a land resembling their lands, they stayed. It is said that the people of Syria were only dispersed throughout the lands because Córdoba became too narrow for them, so he dispersed them. We have mentioned some of his reports in the year 139 AH.
