Chapter mentioning a group of the prophets of the Israelites after Mūsā (peace be upon him)

Translation

✧ Those [who came] after al-Yasaʿ Wahb said: After al-Yasaʿ, a young man named Shamʿūn arose, one of the most virtuous of the Children of Israel. Then he appointed as successor over them a man called ʿAylūq, who was sixty years old. He upheld the truth among them for forty years, so he completed one hundred years. He had two sons who took bribes and committed wicked deeds, so God, Mighty and Majestic, replaced him with Ashmūʾīl. From al-Ḥasan, who said: God became angry with ʿAylūq only because he saw a son of his engaging in matters with women that were not lawful for him, and he said, "Gently, my son." So his Lord became angry with him and said, "It was not from your anger, until My sanctities were violated, except that you said, 'Gently, my son.'" So he fell from his bed, his spinal cord was severed, and his authority was taken away. A son of his was killed in an army he had sent, and the Ark was with them. Their enemy was the Amalekites, who prevailed over them and captured the Ark. Prophethood and succession were transferred to Ashmūʾīl.
