Translation
✧ In the year one hundred and twenty-three, Yūsuf b. ʿUmar sent al-Ḥakam b. Abī al-Ṣalt as an envoy to Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik, asking him to attach Khurāsān to his governorship and to dismiss Naṣr b. Sayyār. This was because Naṣr's governorship had lasted long and Khurāsān had become submissive to him, so Yūsuf envied him and instructed those who disparaged him before Hishām regarding his old age. They said that although he was energetic and brave, he had grown old and his eyesight had weakened so that he could not recognize a man except from close by his voice, and they spoke much against him. Hishām sent to the guesthouse and summoned Muqātil b. ʿAlī al-Saʿdī, who had arrived from Khurāsān with one hundred and fifty Turks. He asked him about al-Ḥakam and what he had governed in Khurāsān. He said: "He governed a village called al-Fāriyāb whose land tax was seventy thousand. Al-Ḥārith b. Surayj captured him, tweaked his ear, and released him, saying: 'You are too insignificant for me to kill.'" So Hishām did not dismiss Naṣr b. Sayyār from Khurāsān.
