The Year 120 AH from the Prophetic Emigration
ذِكْرُ عِدَّةِ حَوَادِثَ فِي سنة عشرين ومائة غَزَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ هِشَامِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ الصَّائِفَةَ ، وَافْتَتَحَ سَنْدَرَةَ. وَفِيهَا غَزَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ الْعُقَيْلِيُّ تُومَانْشَاهْ، وَافْتَتَحَ قِلَاعَهَا وَخَرَّبَ أَرْضَهَا. وَفِيهَا غَزَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْحِمَارُ بِلَادَ التُّرْكِ . وكَانَ قَدْ وَلَّاهُ هِشَامٌ أَرْمِينِيَّةَ، فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ يَسْتَأْذِنُهُ فِي الدُّخُولِ إِلَى بِلَادِهِمْ، فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ هِشَامٌ: كَيْفَ أَفْعَلُ مَا لَمْ يَفْعَلْهُ أَحَدٌ قَبْلِي، فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ: إِنَّ النَّاسَ يَشْتَهُونَ ذَلِكَ وَأَرْجُو أَنْ يَكُونَ فِيهِ خَيْرٌ، فَأَذِنَ لَهُ، فَدَخَلَ وَالْقَوْمُ غَارُّونَ فَهَرَبُوا إِلَى الْآجَامِ، فَأَضْرَمَهَا نَارًا، وَاقْتَتَلُوا قِتَالًا شَدِيدًا، وَظَفِرَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ، وَبَعَثُوا إِلَيْهِ بِالْخَبَرِ.
Translation
✧ Mention of several events In the year one hundred and twenty, Sulaymān b. Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik raided the summer expedition and conquered Sandarah. In it Isḥāq b. Muslim al-ʿUqaylī raided Tūmānshāh, conquered its fortresses, and laid waste its land. In it Marwān b. Muḥammad al-Ḥimār raided the land of the Turks. Hishām had appointed him over Armenia, and he wrote to him asking permission to enter their land. Hishām wrote to him: "How can I do what no one before me has done?" He wrote to him: "The people desire that, and I hope there is good in it." So he gave him permission. He entered while the people were heedless, and they fled to the thickets. He set them ablaze, and they fought a fierce battle. The Muslims prevailed, and they sent the news to him.
